Yoon Kye-sang’s Singing Career
Before joining g.o.d, Yoon Kye-sang sent a demo tape to be a rock singer to Park Joon-hyung’s music project. Initially, Park Joon-hyung wanted to make a group that consists of Danny Ahn, Son Ho-young, and actress Kim Sun-ah. Later, Kim Sun-ah left the group to pursue acting and was replaced with Kim Tae-woo. The group was initially named GOT6 and changed to g.o.d (Groove Over Dose). They debuted in 1999 with the song “To Mother.” The song was inspired by Park Joon-hyung’s childhood in the middle of the IMF crisis.
At that time, Yoon Kye-sang was 21 years old. After releasing albums, g.o.d became one of the most popular Korean boy bands in the 2000s and even abroad. In 2004, Yoon Kye-sang left the group because his contract with SidusHQ expired. After leaving the group, he started pursuing acting and landed his first role in the movie Flying Boys in 2004.
After Yoon Kye-sang left the group, the other members continued to release albums until going on a hiatus. In 2014, Yoon Kye-sang rejoined the group and they made a comeback with all the members. A rumor started in 2013 after Yoon Kye-sang signed again with SidusHQ. The album Chapter 8 was released with the title songs “The Lone Duckling” and “Sky Blue.” Both songs successfully charted on music programs and digital charts. Yoon Kye-sang even wrote the song titled “Wind” to show his gratitude towards his fans. They continued to promote and tour domestically and even overseas. In September 2018, g.o.d starred in the reality show Shall We Walk Together as part of the celebration of their 20th anniversary.
Yoon Kye-sang’s Acting Career
After leaving the group, Yoon Kye-sang started to pursue acting. His first role was in the movie Flying Boys. In the movie, he played the lead role and acted as a high schooler alongside actors On Joo-wan and Lee Joon-gi. He was also cast in the drama My 19 Year Old Sister-in-Law as a supporting actor. After receiving his first role in a movie and drama, he abruptly had to serve in the military and returned to acting at the end of 2007. His first work after being discharged was in the drama Crazy in Love where he was the lead actor alongside actress Lee Mi-yeon. In 2008, Yoon Kye-sang was cast in the movie Lovers of Six Years with actress Kim Ha-neul. The movie tells about a relationship between Jae-young (played by Yoon Kye-sang) and Da-jin (played by Kim Ha-neul) after six years of dating and living together. The couple started to get bored with each other and started flirting with other people.
One of Yoon Kye-sang’s most impressive performances was in Beastie Boys where he acted with actor Ha Jung-woo. In the movie, he acted as a prostitute who started to fall in love with his own customer. The director said that this movie depicts youths living in Gangnam and their survival in the capitalistic society. The movie did well in the Korean box office in 2012.
In 2011, Yoon Kye-sang was cast in the drama The Greatest Love with actors Cha Seung-won and Gong Hyo-jin. The drama is written by the Hong sisters who have been writing hit dramas. It is no wonder that the drama successfully took first place in ratings. Later, Yoon Kye-sang got his first sitcom role in the sitcom High Kick! 3 in 2011. After that, in 2013, he got cast again the sitcom Potato Star 2013QR3 as a cameo for two episodes. In the same year, Yoon Kye-sang signed with Saram Entertainment to support his acting career.
In 2015, Yoon Kye-sang acted in the movie The Unfair in the lead role as a public defender named Jin-won. Actually, the filming was finished in 2013, but the release date got pushed back to 2015. Yoon Kye-sang’s last drama is The Good Wife, a remake of the American series with the same title that aired in 2016. In the drama, he acted as Seo Jong-woon, a friend of the main character Kim Hye-kyung (played by Jeon Do-yeon). His acting as the lawyer received good responses from viewers. In the same year, he got cast in the movie The Bacchus Lady with senior actress Youn Yuh-jung. His last movie is Golden Plumber which released in February 2018. In the movie, he played the supporting role of Moo-yeol.
