Let’s Meet The Most Popular and Multi-Talented Artists who Have Chosen to Leave YG Entertainment

YG Entertainment is known as one of the top three giant entertainment companies that overshadow talented singers. The agency founded by Yang Hyun-suk is home to many idol groups, such as BIGBANG, 2NE1, Winner, iKON, Blackpink, Lee Hi, Akmu, and many more.

During its 22 years of existence, YG Entertainment has naturally experienced many changes, including their upbringing artists. The agency that was inaugurated in February 1996, has undergone many changes, including celebrities who are in and out of the agency. Their contract being expired and wanting to set up a label themselves has been the reason many artists have decided to leave YG Entertainment.



Choi Hwi-sung was born on February 5th, 1982, in Seoul, South Korea. He is better known by his stage name Wheesung. He is an R&B singer, record producer, and South Korean musical theatre actor. He was an avid dancer in high school, where he was part of a rock band; he began singing in his final year.

He initially attended the Sun Moon University, under the journalism major but dropped out. Wheesung subsequently attended the Gukje Digital University and Kyung Hee University’s Graduate School of Communication. In 2017, Wheesung set up an independent label called Realslow Company, and also promotes under another stage name Realslow.

He started his career in 1997 as a member of a back dancing team ING. Wheesung continued his career in 1999 with the short-lived Korean boy group, A4. He left after the band’s first album debut, citing musical differences between himself and the other members of the band. After that, he joined a rock band, MAME, as vocalist for a short while. And, he attended the MBC College Music Festival in 2000.

In 2000, he signed with M Boat, a former sister company of YG Entertainment. He underwent a few years of vocal training under the label and released his first solo album Like A Movie in 2002. The album became very popular after receiving praise from many well-known artists, including Seo Taiji and Shin Seung-hun. In 2003, he released his second album, It’s Real. It proved to be as popular as his first, making him the best selling artist of 2003 in Korea. Unlike his debut album, It’s Real wasn’t restricted to R&B and it included different musical elements like pop and hip-hop.

Wheesung left YG Entertainment after his contract expired in March 2006. He signed a new contract that is reportedly worth 1.5 million won with his new company Orange Shock Agency.

Wheesung Released ‘Breaking Down’ And ‘In Space’ Music Videos


Wheesung released his music videos for “Breaking Down” and “In Space.”

Both of the Music Videos have an artsy vibe, and both “Breaking Down” and “In Space” have the R&B vibe Wheesung is known for. “In Space” is about never letting go of someone as long as they’re in the same universe, while “Breaking Down” is a less upbeat track about a breakup.

Park Ji-yeon was born on April 8th, 1981. She is better known by her stage name Gummy. She is a South Korean singer. She debuted in 2003 with the album, Like Them, and since then has become known for her soundtrack appearances. Her title track “Memory Loss (기억상실)” brought her success and recognition and led to Gummy winning the Bonsang award at the 19th Golden Disk Awards. The same year, Gummy earned the Mobile Popularity Award for “Memory Loss” at the 2004 Mnet Km Music Festival. However, she suffered vocal nodules between the first and second albums.

She released her fourth album titled Comfort on March 12th, 2008, which marked her first release in three years. The lead single “I’m Sorry (미안해요)” features T.O.P from BigBang. A week after its release, the song peaked within the top five spots on various digital charts.

Gummy Leaves YG Entertainment


The 37-year-old singer began her career in the entertainment world in 2003. At that time, she was still in a double contract with M-Boat Entertainment and YG Entertainment. This was because, at that time, YG Entertainment was still working with M Boat Entertainment. When the two agencies’ cooperation contracts expired, Gummy was given the opportunity to choose to join either M-Boat Entertainment or YG Entertainment, in 2007. The owner of Park Ji-yeon’s real name then decided to join YG Entertainment. After ten years under YG Entertainment and her employment contract expiring, Jo Jung-suk’s wife then chose to leave YG Entertainment.

“YG Entertainment has a tendency to release albums if there is good music. They don’t release albums too often. The artists agree with that, and every artist has the ambition to release good music. I also made an album at YG Entertainment, which was rejected about 2 times. After thinking about it for a long time, I decided to move to another agency,” she said about the reason for choosing to leave YG Entertainment as reported by Allkpop. In October 2013, she was confirmed to join C-JeS Entertainment. Reportedly, the agency was chosen directly by Yang Hyun-suk.

Gummy Releases a New Single “Alone”

On March 18th, 2019, Gummy released a new single titled “Alone.” The song tells about two people who are unhappy and feel lonely. Both of them eventually decide to separate after fighting too often. The following are the lyrics of the song “Alone” which shows Gummy’s vocal strength.



Choi Dong-wook was born on November 9th, 1984. He is better known by his stage name Seven (stylized as Se7en). He is a South Korean singer, who has also advanced into Japan, China, and even the United States. 

Seven began training under the management agency YG Entertainment at the age of fifteen. After four years of training in singing and dancing, he made his debut in 2003 with “Come Back To Me.” He then released his debut album Just Listen on March 8th, 2003. Later that year, he received the Best Newcomer Award from MNET, who described Seven as a super rookie who could only stand against Rain, although the two were friends back in their high school years, alongside Boom.

SE7EN Leaves YG Entertainment


The artist whose real name is Choi Dong-wook has been a trainee under YG Entertainment since he was 15 years old. After four years of training, he made his debut in 2003 with the release of the album, Come Back To Me.

After a 12-year career with YG Entertainment, both parties eventually agreed not to renew the cooperation contract. Yang Hyun-suk revealed that Se7en’s contract had ended before the 33-year-old man underwent military service. After completing his military service, Se7en later established his own agency which he named ELEVEN9 Entertainment. Until now all the schedules are still handled by the agency that was established in December 2015.

Se7en Makes a Comeback With the Latest Song “Scared”


On November 22nd, SE7EN released a cover image of his upcoming digital single “Scared” and announced his comeback. According to the image, the singer will release the single on November 25th, and then he will officially begin the comeback promotions.

This is his first new track since the release of the mini-album I AM SE7EN in October 2016. For the past two years, he had been going back and forth between musicals and variety shows and had even taken a break from the music industry.

In August, he became the only Korean torchbearer for the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games and greeted his fans for the first time in a while. Moreover, the singer plans to attend the 2018 Asia Artist Awards and put on a great performance on November 28th.

Meanwhile, SE7EN’s new digital single “Scared” was released on November 25th, 2018, at 6 PM, KST.

Masta Wu


Woo Jin-won was born on October 25th, 1978. He is better known by his stage name Masta Wu. He is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and producer. His previous stage name was Ginnwon. He was also a part of the hip-hop project duo YMGA.

After being an underground rapper, Woo signed with YG Entertainment. He released his first album, Masta Peace in 2003, and his second album Brand Wu Year in 2007. In 2014, he was one of the producers of the talent show Show Me The Money 3He wrote several songs for his label-mates, for example, project duo Hi Suhyun, solo singer Lee Hi, and girl band 2NE1. As of April 2015, he has 74 songs credited to his name at the Korea Music Copyright Association.

Masta Wu Leaves YG Entertainment


Just like Se7en, Masta Wu also decided to set up his own record label in 2016. After a sixteen-year career with YG Entertainment, he chose not to renew his contract.

This 39-year-old man began his career as an underground rapper. In 2000 he then continued his career by joining YG Entertainment. Compared to being a singer, he is known to be more active as a songwriter and producer. The owner of the real name Woo Jin-won is the person behind Hi Su-hyun’s song “I’m Different” and some 2NE1 songs. His name gets recognition again after appearing as a producer in the Show Me The Money 3 survival program.

Nam Tae-hyun


Nam Tae-hyun was born on May 10th, 1994. He is also known as Taehyun. He is a South Korean singer, songwriter, producer, and actor. His own music label, South Buyers Club, was founded in March 2017. Under the label, Nam Tae-hyun introduced the band South Club, in which he plays an active role of a leader, vocalist, guitarist, and main composer. He was previously the main vocalist, composer, and producer of the K-Pop group Winner.

Prior to his debut as a member of Winner, Nam Tae-hyun performed as a backup dancer for the YG Family Concert 2011. In 2013, he competed in the reality program Win: Who Is Next as a trainee in Team A, after which he went on to debut as a member of group Winner. Nam Tae-hyun co-composed and co-wrote two songs that were used in the competitions of the show.

Nam Tae-hyun participated in the production of Winner’s debut album, 2014 S/S, which was released in August 2014. He co-composed three songs from the album – “But (사랑하지마),” “Tonight (이 밤),” and his solo track “Confession (고백하는거야).” The album topped several charts, including the Gaon Music Chart as well as the Billboard’s World Albums Chart. In 2015, while the group was on hiatus, Nam Tae-hyun made his acting debut in the web drama Midnight Girl. That same year, he played a supporting role in the drama Late Night Restaurant. He was also cast in the joint Chinese-Korean production Under the Black Moonlight.

Nam Tae-hyun Leaves YG Entertainment


2016 was probably the toughest year for YG Stans (fans of YG Entertainment artists). How not, after 2NE1 was confirmed to have disbanded. On the exact same day, on November 25th, 2016, Winner was confirmed to have lost one member.

YG Entertainment confirmed that Nam Tae-hyun decided to leave the agency and the group that had raised his name. At that time, he was reported to have mental health problems, so he had to undergo treatment. While doing an interview with Chosun Ilbo on Tuesday, February 2nd, this 24-year-old idol revealed that he was not strong with his life as a confined K-Pop idol. After leaving YG Entertainment, Nam Tae-hyun is known to set up his own label and has a career as an indie singer.

Former WINNER member Nam Tae-hyun has shared that he wants to release at least 10 new songs this year!

In a recent pictorial and interview for Dazed Magazine, Nam Tae-hyun revealed that he intends to keep his fans busy in 2018. “I think that I’ll be releasing 10 or more songs within this year,” the singer remarked. He went on, “In terms of my plans for the immediate future, I expect to release a song sometime in April. At any rate, I plan to promote [the whole year] without resting.”

Nam Tae-hyun also talked about wanting to hold a concert, saying, “If the opportunity should arise, I want to stage a concert with only our songs.” He then added jokingly, “I want my fans to be able to see me so often that they get sick of me.”
