The group Winner exists thanks to the survival show called “WIN: Who is Next?”, which was created by YG Entertainment and Mnet. It was a competition among YG Entertainment’s male trainees, for the purpose of setting the lineup of YG’s next boy-group. The show aired on Mnet from August 23 to October 25, 2013, with 11 episodes. The result is the group named “WINNER”, which made a debut as five-member group in 2014, before Nam Tae-hyun’s departure on November 25, 2016.

On January 10, 2016, WINNER revealed through their VLive channel, “WINNER ENTRY NIGHT”, that they wrote and composed around 100 songs before their label cut it down to about 20 tracks, according to Koreaboo. WINNER is known for the fact that each member has been writing and composing their own music since their pre-debut days. The members  that do most of the writing and composition are Yoon, Hoony, and Mino. Jinu started to compose his own song for his solo.

2014 S/S is WINNER’s debut studio album, which was released on August 12, 2014. It consists of 10 songs. Yoon, Hoony, Mino, and ex-member Nam Tae-hyun wrote the lyrics and produced the majority of the tracklist, with the help of several professional producers. The song “Empty” was written by Mino, with producers B.I and Bobby, and was produced by producers B.I and P.K. “Color Ring” was written by Yoon, Mino, and Hoony, and produced by Yoon with Ham Seung-cheon, Kang Uk-jin, Sung Hwak-cho, and Dee.P.

On February 19, 2016, when WINNER appeared as the guest on KBS2’s “Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook”, Yoon shared about what they’ve been going through since their debut. Yoon hinted that 2015 was the hardest time for WINNER, as they prepared for their 2016 comeback. He revealed that Yang Hyun-seuk, founder of YG Entertainment, gave him very harsh feedback in the process of working on the “EXIT : E” EP album at the time.
