Tiny G’s Mint’s Disbandment and Solo Activity
On February 10, 2015, rumors circulated that Tiny-G’s member Dohee refused to participate in group activities. This is allegedly because Dohee gained more popularity through the world of acting. The 20-year-old K-pop idol began to be widely recognized by the public through her acting in the drama Reply 1994. The news suddenly made the public wonder about the fate of Tiny-G as a girl group.
An agency representative denied the rumors of disbandment that were circulating widely in the public. The representative confirmed that it was just ridiculous news whose source was unclear. “That is absurd news,” said a representative. “Dohee made a lot of sacrifices and worked hard to be able to debut with Tiny-G. It felt ridiculous if she just decided to leave.”
The agency emphasized that currently, the girl group Tiny-G is only on hiatus because each member is busy with individual activities. The agency also revealed that communication between the members went well and there were no problems.
They continued, “Tiny-G is currently on hiatus because they are stopping group activities. Nothing else has changed. The members are only focusing on their individual activities. We are also looking for a different direction because we don’t want the members to have nothing to do. We try to help Thai [Mint] members promote envy in Thailand, like how we helped Dohee focus on her acting in Korea.”
Tiny-G’s agency also withdrew from their music business department, which also led to rumors of the girl group being disbanded. In this case, they said, “The music team is no longer there. Automatically, all work regarding this group will be the responsibility of the management team. Dohee does whatever the company tells her to do. This is slander. The group recently went on hiatus. They can come back at any time.”
In 2015, Tiny-G was reportedly unofficially disbanded according to its agency GNG Production. Tiny-G’s Mint decided to terminate her contract and move to JSL Entertainment to prepare for her solo debut, and the only member who was still in GNG Production was Tiny-G’s Dohee.
The agency of the 3-member girl group released news to Yonhap News, “The group has released several albums since 2012, but all of the albums failed to impress K-pop fans. Dohee will continue to pursue her acting career while the other two members, Mint and J.Min, will continue to work as singers in Thailand,” said an official from the agency.
A local news agency also reported that the main reason the group disbanded was that Dohee refused to appear as part of the girl group after she gained fame and popularity with the popular cable TV drama Reply 1994 which was broadcasted in 2013. In response to reports of Dohee’s refusal to continue working with the group, the agency officially said, “It cost millions of won to produce one album. It was not Dohee’s choice to hold Tiny-G’s pace. I feel sorry that some reports are blaming Dohee for breaking up the group.”
After the disbandment news of Tiny-G, Tiny-G’s Mint, who had joined JSL Entertainment at that time, made a solo debut by releasing her first single titled “Already Go Lady” (Hangul: 얼레리 꼴레리) in April 2016. After various series to make her solo debut successful including releasing music videos and individual image teasers, the music video was finally released on April 14, 2016.
Mintty seemed very confident in her rap skills and dance skills that were above average in the 3 minute and 39-second music video. “Already Go Lady” is a song that has a medium beat tempo, is trendy, and also shows Mintty’s optimistic side as a soloist. The background music video also shows an underground street with a hip hop style and has sexy choreography that has swag and is fierce at the same time.
Mintty also had the opportunity to make a debut stage that was broadcasted on several television stations. In Show Champion episode 183, Mintty made her debut stage with “Already Go Lady” with some backup dancers. With energetic choreography, Mintty seemed to be enjoying her debut stage at the performance.
Not only appearing on one music program, Mintty once again made her debut stage and performed on MBC’s Show Music Core on an episode that was aired on April 23, 2016. She wore a very catchy outfit and performed dance moves that excelled in her debut as a soloist. In the performance, there was also a fan chant to support Mintty in the performance.
In 2017, the former member of Tiny-G, Mint, was confirmed as a contestant on one of the idol rebooting projects The Unit which was broadcasted on KBS. A total of 126 contestants made from a mixture of trainees and members of girl groups and boy groups competed to maintain their ranks so that they could debut as the final lineup in the last episode.
Unfortunately, former Tiny-G’s Mint could only defend herself to 38th place and was eliminated on episode 10 along with several other contestants such as Brave Girls‘ Yujeong, WING’s Yeseul, GP Basic’s Janey, T-ARA‘s Han Areum, etc.
One of the unforgettable performances of former Tiny-G’s Mint was when she showed her dance skills, which is b-boying that not all idols are able to perform, in front of the contestants from KBS’ The Unit. Even though the performance was very short, she was able to get 90 boots in the episode as well as cheering from the contestants who attended and watched Tiny-G’s Mint’s dance performance at that time.
“In the last mission, I couldn’t sing, so I feel great to win this battle,” Mint said as she won the Best Female Dance during that episode.
