  1. 2PM’s Jay Park scandal

Jay Park was the leader of 2PM. In September 2009, fans discovered an old post of Jay Park on Myspace in which he had written bad things about Korea, such as “Korea is gay. I hate Koreans,” in 2005. Due to the controversies, Jay Park officially left 2PM in 2010.

2. 2PM’s Nichkhun’s drunk driving car accident

On July 24th, 2012, 2PM’s Nichkhun was involved in a car accident in Gangnam. Nichkhun was caught driving under the influence of alcohol. It has been reported that the singer had been under the influence of alcohol when he crashed into a motorcycle. Nichkhun had been on his way to his dormitory after having two glasses of beer with his fellow JYP labelmates following a rehearsal.

Due to the accident, his license has been suspended. According to the Gangnam Police Station, no one was seriously injured, and both Nichkhun and the victim completed their insurance protocols following the incident. 

3. TWICE’s Tzuyu controversy

In November 2015, Tzuyu was involved in nationality-related controversy. During an episode of My Little Television that aired on MBC, JYP Entertainment’s rookie girl group, TWICE, was given the task to hold up a flag of their country of origin as the group is composed of members of different nationalities. Tzuyu, who was born in Taiwan, greeted online viewers as Taiwanese and held up the Republic of China flag.

Since the broadcast, Tzuyu’s actions received backlash and she was heavily criticized by Chinese media and netizens. TWICE’s activities, including endorsements and scheduled appearance, were canceled and suspended. Tzuyu released a video where she apologized for her actions.

4. Jun-hyeok’s departure from Day6

In January 2016, Day6’s Junhyeok left the group. It was stated that he terminated his contract with JYP Entertainment and left for personal reasons. In 2015, Junhyeok was involved in a scandal regarding him and a fan with whom he flitted through his social media pages on Facebook and Instagram. Screenshots of his flirtations emerged, and it was rumored that he and the girl he was flirting with were actually dating.

5. Got7’s party in LA

In July 2016, GOT7’s Yugyeom and BamBam were under fire for questionable behavior at a pool party they attended in Los Angeles. Unfortunately for the two idols, their behavior was recorded on Snapchat, and it caused an uproar among GOT7 and K-Pop fans. In one video, Yugyeom could be seen red-faced. Netizens are calling out the 18-year-old Yugyeom for underage drinking as he appears to be under the influence of alcohol. In another video, BamBam can be heard saying the N-word, a derogatory term used against African-Americans. Some fans are saying the party was held at member Mark’s family home.

6. Park Jin-young’s salvation sect involvement

Park Jin-young was accused by Dispatch of being a part of the Salvation Sect, a cult group that’s linked with the Sewol Ferry tragedy. Dispatch revealed the details of the religious event held by JYP, what JYP said in the meeting, who attended, and what this all means for his label, JYP Entertainment. However, JYP denied all connections to the Salvation cult and even issued a legal threat against Dispatch.

7. TWICE’s Sana’s Instagram scandal

In April 2019, the prompted far-right nationalistic Korean netizens bashed Sana for making a post about Japan while working and earning money in Korea. The backlash started after Sana posted a photo on TWICE’s official Instagram. In a photo that she posted, Sana wrote a caption in Japanese about the recent end of Japan’s Heisei era.

“As someone born in the Heisei era, I am sad that it is coming to an end. However, Heisei, you worked hard. It’s the beginning of the Reiwa era so I’m going to face the beginning and complete the last day of Heisei neatly.” Korea-Japan relations are historically tense so when a foreign idol gets marginally political they face a lot of backlash from some extreme nationalistic members of the Korean public. 

8. Yoon Seo-bin’s scandal

Produce X 101 contestant Yoon Seo-bin was a representative of JYP Entertainment. During the show, Yoon Seo-bin was facing controversy after a netizen claiming to be a former classmate revealed the trainee was the notorious bully in school and uploaded past school images of the trainee, and even revealed Yoon Seo-bin’s real name as Yoon Byung-hwi.

In one picture that the netizen shared, Yoon Seo-bin could be seen being involved in underage drinking and smoking. There were also screen-shots of social media posts where he repeatedly used vulgar language. Soon after the rumors spread, Seo-bin left the audition survival program. It was also reported that JYP removed him as a trainee under their company eventually.

On December 9th, 2019, Stray Kids released their new album Clé: LEVANTER. The music video of the title track of the album “Levanter” was also released on the same day.

However, before the album was released, on October 28th, 2019, JYP Entertainment announced that Woojin left Stray Kids due to personal circumstances, and the release of Clé: Levanter was delayed to December 9th, 2019. On November 13th, 2019, the group released the music video for “Astronaut.” It was their first single without Woojin and as an eight-member group.

Recently, JYP Entertainment has released an official statement regarding the personal information of TWICE’s Dahyun that was exposed at the airport on December 29th, 2019. Dahyun’s personal information including her unique identification number such as her resident registration number was filmed, leaked, and spread online. JYP Entertainment stated that they will take legal measures based on the appropriate laws regarding the current situation of the dissemination and any continuous circulation of the information.
