The Return of Superman

The Return of Superman is a popular Korean reality-variety show. The program was first broadcast on KBS2 starting on September 19, 2013. The original 3 episodes were aired with appearances by Lee Hwi-jae, Choo Sung-hoon, and Jang Hyun-sung with their respective children. The celebrity fathers take care of their children while their mother leaves the house for two days and two nights. Cameras and cameramen took videos of the fathers and children’s activities while they are given a certain task. A narrator explains about each segment and introduces the next segment. The program showed unscripted actions and the true expressions of the father and his children while he’s babysitting them.

The Return of Superman reached its peak popularity when Korean actor Song Il-gook and his triplet sons; Daehan, Minguk, and Manse appeared on the show from July 6, 2014, to February 7, 2016. The show became a global phenomenon because the triplets, who were just over two years old when they started appearing on the show, were incredibly cute and smart. Each of the triplets has their own character. Daehan was known for his style and leadership, Minguk for his cleverness, and Manse for his cuteness and shyness. Song Il-gook and his sons visited many places and did many activities while wearing matching clothes all the time. Their cuteness won the hearts of global fans, especially Asian fans. Viewers can watch them grow from helpless babies to independent and smart boys.

The Return of Superman is currently airing with the following cast lineup: Australian comedian Sam Hammington, Soccer player Park Joo-ho, and TV personality Moon Hee-joon, Singer Hong Kyung-min with their respective children.

Robocar Poli

Robocar Poli is a Korean animation TV series created by RoiVisual. The series was broadcast by the Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) from February 28, 2011 to November 24, 2015. Robocar Poli spanned for four seasons and consisted of 104 segments, each with 11 minutes duration.

Poli is the main character of the series. It is a robotic police car (hence its name, Poli), that can change shape into a robot. Amber is a robotic ambulance  which carries on rescue missions and gives treatments to other cars that have been in an accident. Roy is a fire truck, and the strongest member of the team. Helly is a rescue helicopter which monitors the town for problems. The last main character is Jin, who is a human rescue team member. She is smart and helpful with suggestions on how to solve problems.

In the small city of Brooms Town, accidents and problems occur regularly and the rescue team, led by Poli, helps the townspeople from the accident and solves their problems. Other than helping with problems, the rescue team also warns people in danger and prevents accidents from occurring.

The series is a huge success in Korea and became a rival for the established animation, Pororo the Little Penguin. After the 4th season, the series stopped producing hew episodes, but spin-off episodes are released regularly in other countries, such as Canada and Singapore.

PJ Masks

PJ Masks are superheroes who are 30 feet tall and can produce monsters from their belly. PJ Masks is an animation series created by Entertainment One, Frog Box, and TeamTO. The animation series was originated in France and the United Kingdon. It was first broadcast in the United States on September 18, 2015 and in Canada on February 7, 2016.

PJ Masks is a superhero team that keeps the peace and protects the people from crime at night time. Among their members are: Connor, or the Catboy, who is the main superhero and transforms into a blue cat with cat ears and a tail; Amaya, or the Owlette, who can transform into an owl, and Greg, or the Gecko, who can transform into a lizard with a reptile tail.

PJ Masks aired on Disney Channel Korea from Monday to Friday at 10 am in 2017. The second series aired on the EBS channel. Cooperation with EBS brought lots of popularity among viewers in the Korean market. Licenses for toys and publications were already in place, while those for apparel and stationery will follow soon.


Tayo The Little Bus is a Korean animation series created by Iconix Entertainment, EBS, and the Metropolitan Government of Seoul. Tayo was aired starting in 2010 on the EBS channel and spanned five seasons. Tayo The Little Bus has four main characters and is based on four types of buses in Seoul.

The main characters in Tayo The little Bus are: Tayo (Bus #120, blue), who is a friendly and smart bus who was the third largest bus; Rogi (Bus #1000, green), who is an easygoing and kind-hearted bus, Lani (Bus #02, yellow), who is cute and playful, but also a sensitive and temperamental bus, and Gani (Bus #1339, red), who is hardworking and kind, but also a shy and timid bus.

On March 26, 2014, the Seoul city bus system operated four different buses painted with Tayo characters for a month. The buses operated on four different bus lines, and each was painted with Tayo, Rogi, Lani and Gani characters. The project was initiated to teach young kid to use public buses. The initiative drew crowds from all over the country to come and use the buses. It reportedly drew around 40,000 people in a single day.
