Yoon Sung-mo’s Debut with SUPERNOVA
Before officially debuting in 2007, SUPERNOVA had a little history about their career journey. The group that was originally formed by Mnet Media in 2006 had a 5-member line-up under the name GM5 which consisted of Park Geon-il, Kim Sung-je, Kim Kwang-soo, Song Ji-hyuk, and Han Ji-hoo. At the end of 2006, GM5 did a member line-up change with a 6-member formation where Ji-hoo was removed from the group and replaced with 2 new members, Jung Yoon-hak and Ki Jin-chul. Not long after, Yoon Sung-mo was added to the group to replace Kim Jin-chul.
In 2008, SUPERNOVA made a promotion in Thailand. The following year, SUPERNOVA also collaborated with a rookie girl group at that time, T-ARA, with the song “T.T.L (Time To Love)” that was released in 2009, and in the same year, the group finally made its debut in Japan.
SUPERNOVA was previously under the auspices of Maroo Entertainment (Korea), but the contract ended on June 21, 2018. After that, SUPERNOVA joined SV Entertainment (Japan). In 2011, almost all of SUPERNOVA’s members did solo activities.
The members are heavily involved in various musical drama titles both in Japan and Korea.
SUPERNOVA is a group that is quite active in promoting and releasing several songs every year. However, SUPERNOVA is more popular in Japan, so their discography also has more songs in Japanese than Korean. Individual members also have the opportunity to pursue solo careers by debuting as actors, models, singers, and more.
Yoon Sung-mo’s Controversy and Decision to Leave SUPERNOVA
On March 7, 2016, there was news that a boy group member was arrested by the Seoul Songpa Police for driving while drunk. Not only that but this idol also caused chaos in the Seokchon-dong area of Seoul.
It was revealed that the idol was Yoon Sung-mo, a SUPERNOVA member, which is Sung-mo, and an official statement was released through his agency, Maroo Entertainment.
“Yoon Sung-mo was drinking with a friend and around 1:20 in the morning on March 7, 2016, he came home in a private car,” said Maroo Entertainment’s representative.
“Since there were no cars on the road at that time, he (Sung-mo) ignored the traffic signs and was about to enter the lane when he saw the police and was caught driving drunk. After being tested, it was found that he had an alcohol content of 0.092 percent in his blood and he’s currently being sent home by the police.”
Sung-mo’s side and the police were still in the process of finding out more details. When the investigation is complete, Maroo Entertainment promised to pass the results to the public. Maroo’s representative also stated that Sung-mo was pondering his mistakes and would fulfill the call for further investigation. Maroo Entertainment also apologized to fans for the chaos caused by Sung-mo and promised that the same thing would not happen again.
But, on January 23, 2019, Yoon Sung-mo finally decided to leave the group and SUPERNOVA returned to the stage with only five members. There is no clear statement about the reason why Yoon Sung-mo left SUPERNOVA, but maybe he wants to try a solo career in the future.
