Story of EXO M: From the EXO China Subunit To the Disbandment Reason

Debut as EXO Sub-unit in China

The 12 members of EXO debuted in early 2012 by introducing several members’ debut teaser. Kai was the first member that was named as part of EXO, and Chanyel was the last. EXO already had plans to divide into the sub-units EXO-M and EXO-K before their debut year (2011), and EXO-M is more focused on promotion in China. Before debuting, EXO had released two prologue singles, “What is Love” and “History”, the singles had music videos.

Before EXO’s official debut, only four members appeared before the public: Kai, Luhan, Tao, and Chen. They performed at the 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun on December 29, 2011.

They held their first showcase on March 31, 2012, and their second showcase on April 1, 2012. After the showcases, EXO made their official debut on April 8, 2012. EXO-K and EXO-M made their official debut together, with the same songs, but in two different places. EXO-M appeared at the Music Festival Awards in China, known as the ‘Chinese Grammy’. This is a famous and influential award even,t which many of China’s top stars attend. EXO debuted with the single “MAMA”.

Over time, this sub-unit shrank to only three members, Chen, lay, and Xiumin. At this time, they joined with EXO with full members.

Schedule in China

In 2015, EXO only consisted of nine members. EXO will continue their promotion in China, even though they have now lost three EXO-M members. This was confirmed directly by Suho, EXO’s leader when interviewed by a Chinese media source, Mango TV. At that time, they were asked about plans for promotions in China.

Asked about this, Suho answered “In China, EXO always holds concerts and tours. Currently, we’re holding a concert. Also among EXO members, Lay is currently working hard to star in variety shows, even films, and dramas.”

Together with Lay, EXO will also be scheduled to star in a variety show in China,” he said, explaining that EXO would continue to do promotion there. Even though EXO-M left only Lay who came from China, it didn’t prevent EXO from continuing to do promotions in China at that time.
