Out of all the five members of SS501, Kim Kyu-jong is well known for being close with his family. Kim Kyu-jong was born to a small family of four, an older brother to Kim Eun-ah, a sister a few years younger than him. Kim Kyu-jong was raised in Jeonju, but moved to Seoul to pursue his dreams of becoming an entertainer. Despite this, he was still able to take time off his busy schedule to make it to his sister’s graduation.

Music Career; SS501, Double S 301 and Solo Songs


Career with SS501

Kim Kyu-jong’s music career started with the debut of SS501 in 2005. On June 8, 2005, DSP Media debuted a five member group called SS501 releasing the album Warning with their title track “Never Again”. SS501 starting off with a bang as they succeeded in winning many rookie awards after their debut.

In mid 2006, SS501 held their first concert, “Step Up Concert”, in Osaka, Japan. Shortly after they returned to Korea and on November 10th released their first studio album, S.T 01 Now.

In 2007, SS501 made their official debut in Japan by releasing the single “Kokoro”, which debuted at number 5 on the Oricon chart and only increased in popularity with each passing day. The song was also made into the ending song for the anime Blue Dragon. 2007 was a year for Japan advancement for the group as they released a second single and an album back to back. Their hard work paid was off by receiving the “Newcomer Award” by Japan Gold Disk Award, which was the first time ever that Korean artists were able to receive the award.

In 2008, they made their comeback to the Korean music industry by releasing the single Deja Vu on March 13th and another mini album, Find. Despite a year after most members started their solo project, SS501 was able to keep their popularity as a group as they also performed together at the Seoul World Cup Stadium representing Korea while receiving Best Asian Artist Award at the 5th Asia Song Festival. Moreover, the three remaining members; Kim Kyu-jong, Heo Young-saeng and Kim Hyun-jung, gathered to make a sub unit of SS501 and released “U R Man, which they performed in one of the episodes of the drama Boys Over Flowers (2009), which is a drama that one of their band-mates, Kim Hyun-joong, starred in. The group project also released an OST for the drama titled 내 머리가 나빠서 (Because I’m Stupid).

In 2009 they held their first ever Asian Tour Concert, embarking on a tour to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. In between their concert, they also released they released their sixth mini album, Solo Collection, and their seventh mini album, Rebirth. 

2010 marked the end of SS501 as a five membered group under DSP Media. They were in the middle of their promotion for their eighth mini album, Destination, when DSP Media cut their promotion short due to the expiration of the contract. On June 18th, DSP Media announced that SS501 would end with “Love Ya”, the title track to Destination, due to the expiration of their contract on June 7th 2010, five years after their debut. This caused the members to be scattered, signing into different companies; Kim Hyun-joong with KeyEast Entertainment, Park Jung-min with CNR Media, Kim Hyung-jun with S-Plus Entertainment and Heo Young-saeng and Kim Kyu-jong both signed with B2M Entertainment.
