Signal is TWICE’s fourth EP that they released since their debuted in 2016. Debuting with a chic concept and getting a breakthrough through their cute and energetic songs, many might not think that TWICE also does songs that are ballads or soft pop.
But, TWICE has released various kinds of music genres, and with the release of “Someone Like You,” they added soft pop as a genre in their discography. “Someone Like Me” was first introduced through the album spoiler that was released by JYP Entertainment prior to TWICE’s Signal comeback.
Background of “Someone Like Me”
The teaser for the Signal EP was released in early May 2017, but before the rumor about TWICE’s full album started circulating, JYP Entertainment denied it and later confirmed that TWICE would make a comeback in May 2017. After the image teaser was released on May 1st, 2017, two days later, the full tracklist was released with the details of six songs on the EP and several members participating in writing the lyrics. It’s the first time the members participated in writing lyrics for their songs.

Story of “Someone Like Me”
Unlike the title, “Someone Like Me” doesn’t really talk about them but actually talks about how much love they feel, and their love accumulates until numbers can’t describe their love. This song that seems to talk about the love they feel actually also talks about the love they receive because it also states that they can’t find someone like the other person.
This song that has a soft pop genre is a song released following the release of “One of a Million.” “One of a Million” is a fan song that is included on Twicecoaster: Lane 1 EP. In “One in a Million,” it describes how special the person is until they are one in a million, while in “Someone Like Me,” it states that they are not going to be able to find someone that they love and love them the way they love right now.
The soft pop song that features the usage of the electric guitar is a song that is suitable to listen to in a calm situation because of how sweet and soft it sounds. The lyrics of “Someone Like Me” are written by Park Won, and the music composers and producers for this song are Ronny Vidar Svendsen, Anne Judith Stokke Wik, Nermin Harambasic, and Moa Anna Maria Carlebecker.
Cazzi Opeia also participated as a background vocalist in “Someone Like Me.” Kwon Young Chan and Park Won participated in vocal production for “Someone Like Me.”
