Actor Shin Ha-kyun
Shin Ha-kyun is an actor from South Korea. In his early career in acting, he trained as a stage actor at the Seoul Institute of the Art. He played in several theater productions before making his acting debut to the big screen. In 1998, he was cast in film director Jang Jin’s first film titled The Happenings. Shin Ha-kyun’s second film The Spy was released in 1999 and was also directed by Director Jang Jin. Since then, Shin Ha-kyun has appeared in almost all of Jang Jin’s feature films. The director said that Shin Ha-kyun is a reliable, skilled, and became the first to immerse himself in the role and always met the director’s expectations. They had a harmonious and productive relationship.
In 2000, Shin Ha-kyun became a cameo in the film The Foul King where Song Kang-ho was the lead role. In the same year, Shin Ha-kyun was cast in Joint Security Area along with Lee Byung-hun and Song Kang-ho. He became a North Korean private soldier. The film was the highest grossing film in Korean history at the time and won many awards. Shin Ha-kyun also received his first awards and nominations due to his acting in this film. He received the Best New Actor award at the 2000 Blue Dragon Film Awards and 2000 Director’s Cut Awards.
In 2001, Shin Ha-kyun was cast in Director Jang Jin’s film Guns & Talks. The main cast included Shin Hyun-joon, Won Bin, Shin Ha-kyun, and Jung Jae-young. The film is about a group of four assassins-for-hire with a dogged prosecutor on their trail. Shin Ha-kyun became the bomb specialist in the group. The film was the No. 7 best selling domestic movie in South Korea in 2001.
In 2002, Shin Ha-kyun became one of the leading roles in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance where he became a deaf-mute factory worker who is trying to earn enough money for his sister’s kidney transplant. The film was the first of The Vengeance Trilogy which deals with the theme of revenge, violence, and salvation by Director Park Chan-wook.
Some films with Shin Ha-kyun being the main character are Save the Green Planet! (2003) about a man who believes that aliens are about to attack the Earth and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) about a village on a remote mountain and untouched by the ongoing Korean War. The film became the second box office seller in 2005. He also played as the lead role in Thirst (2009) about a Catholic priest who is in love with his friend’s wife and turns into a vampire through a failed medical experiment and The Front Line (2011) about the 1953 ceasefire of the Korean War.
The film won four Grand Bell Awards. A few other films include Running Man (2013) about an ordinary man who begins to be chased and watched by the entire nation after he is falsely accused in a homicide case, Room No. 7 (2017) about a corpse being found in a DVD Room by a part-timer and the owner of a store who is trying to sell the room to keep the secret hidden, and many others films.
Shin Ha-kyun made his small screen debut in the series Good Person which aired on MBC from August 27 to October 16, 2003. His co-stars in the series were Jo Han-sun and So Yoo-jin. Seven years later, Shin Ha-kyun was cast in the series Harvest Villa which aired on tvN from March 5 to May 27, 2010. His other television series are Brain (2011), All About My Romance (2013), Mr. Back (2014), and Pied Piper (2016).
