Seungri: Profile, Facts, BIG BANG, Controversies

Seungri’s history with BIG BANG

Born and raised in the city of Gwangju, South Korea, with the real name Lee Seung-hyun, Seungri is known to have extraordinary abilities in dancing. Before joining BIG BANG, he tried his luck in the entertainment industry by participating in the survival show Let’s Coke Play! Battle Shinhwa, a reality show to find Shinhwa members. However, Seungri had to be eliminated in episode nine.

Again trying his luck, Seungri then joined YG Entertainment and participated in a survival show for their new boy band, BIG BANG. In the survival show, he joined TOP, Taeyang, G-Dragon, Daesung, and Hyun-seung (former member of B2ST). He was then eliminated from the competition because the CEO of YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun-suk, said that he was not good enough at singing. However, he finally fought Hyun-seung again to become the fifth member of BIG BANG, and made his debut on September 23rd, 2006 with the song “We Belong Together.” He was the last member to join BIG BANG and also the youngest member of the group.

The track that made BIG BANG’s name widely popular is called “Lies” and it was released on August 16th, 2007, composed and written entirely by the BIG BANG leader, G-dragon.

One year after their debut, BIG BANG won the Song of the Year award at the 2007 Mnet Korean Music Festival. The success of this boy group is not only reached in their own country but in various other countries as well. One of them is Japan. In Japan, BIG BANG won three awards at the 9th MTV Video Music Awards Japan.
After 14 years of career in the South Korean music industry, BIG BANG started to get increasing popularity globally.
In 2011, BIG BANG was awarded the MTV Europe Music Awards in the Best Worldwide Act category. In addition, BIG BANG was also awarded three times at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in the Artist of the Year category, in 2008, 2012, and 2015. To date, BIG BANG has released three Korean studio albums as well as five Japanese studio albums and has toured 14 times around the world. In addition, Seungri and all the BIG BANG members also carry out other activities in the entertainment world, such as solo careers, either in music or acting.

Unfortunately, not only achievements, a number of controversies have colored BIG BANG’s journey in the entertainment industry. BIG BANG’s fate was swayed after TOP was caught consuming marijuana in October 2016. In fact, at that time, BIG BANG had recently made a comeback with an album titled MADE in 2015. The album, MADE, and the title track, “FXXK IT” was the group’s latest release with the full formation.

As a result, TOP was unable to participate in BIG BANG’s concert in 2017. And finally, BIG BANG declared a hiatus for more than two years. Apart from the TOP case, the hiatus was carried out because the other BIG BANG members had to undergo military service.

After the TOP case, it was Seungri’s turn to be involved in the Burning Sun case and a number of other scandals. BIG BANG finally had to lose Seungri, who decided to leave and retire in 2019, leaving G-Dragon, Taeyang, Daesung, and TOP. BIG BANG had to bury their comeback plans on the Coachella 2020 stage.

Seungri and BIG BANG have had good years as it has been named one of The Greatest KPOP Artist of the Decade or the best K-Pop artist for a decade.

Seungri’s Solo Debut

In 2008, after BIG BANG achieved great success thanks to the song “Lies” and won the Song of The Year award at the 2008 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), Seungri then spread his wings as a solo artist. He began his solo career by appearing in the musical Sonagi in 2008. He has also hosted the music program MBC Show! Music Core with his fellow group member, Daesung.

After his hosting gig ended, Seungri released a solo song to erase the BIG BANG maknae image by presenting a more mature self in his solo debut. The song “Strong Baby” was released on August 27th, 2009. The song turned out to be a huge solo success as it won a triple crown on the SBS music program Inkigayo. To this day, there are more than 3,6 million people who have watched the MV.

Not satisfied with being an idol, host, and acting in musicals, Seungri also tried his hand at acting in the world of film. His first film is titled Why Did You Come to My House? which was released in 2009. Following his film debut and acting career, he starred in two films Where R U From? and 19 within the same year. He shot the latter together with the oldest member of BIG BANG, TOP.
Seungri’s career in Korea is beyond any doubt a success. With BIG BANG, Seungri managed to establish his name as a top all-around idol. He even successfully held his first solo concert titled The Great Seungri in 2018.

Apart from a career in South Korea, Seungri also started his career in Japan by appearing at various events using the stage name VI.
He appeared to host a Japanese radio program titled BIG BANG’s All Night Nippon in 2012, and also hosted a special on Fuji TV of the show Sakigake! Ongaku Banzuke Eight.
Seungri then released his first Japanese album in 2012, and sold over 14,000 copies on its first day and topped the Oricon Charts.
Seungri’s career in Japan is quite successful, as he has successfully tried all elements of the entertainment industry in the country. Starting from being a host, singer, and actor.
It can be said that Seungri has had a good and successful year as a solo artist.
