Secret Number’s Denise’s Impressive Appearances on King of Masked Singer
On November 29th, 2020, Denise made an impressive appearance in the competitive singing competition MBC’s King of Masked Singer and even made it to the final round!
She opened the episode which was broadcast by wearing a note mask and singing Urban Zakapa’s “I Don’t Love You”. She wowed the judges with her precise note and flow. The judges referred to her as a mystery singer ‘Notes’.
After wowing the judges in the first round, she proceeded to the second round on December 6th, 2020, singing Sam Kim’s “Make Up”. She successfully showed off her perfect singing skills and reverse rap skills as well as showing off her girl crush charm.
In the same episode and the third round, she reinterpreted BTS’s world-renowned song, “On” in her own unique style. Although she received genuine praises from the judges, unfortunately, she was defeated by the long-term vocalist, ‘The Cat,’ and she had to reveal her identity. The celebrity judges and viewers were amazed and surprised that Denise was behind the mask. In the sixth month of her debut, Denise surprised viewers with her singing ability and sensitivity.
After revealing her identity, she said, “It’s been 200 days since I debuted. I didn’t expect to come until the King’s War. I’m still embarrassed.” Kim Gura then admired her by saying, “Denise can do this well.”
On December 7th, 2020, Denise released her gratitude statement through the agency, saying, “The King of Mask Singer was a show that I wanted to appear on since I was a trainee. It was a great honor to appear in the King of Mask Singer, and it was like a dream to sing in front of great seniors.” She then continued, “I am grateful to the production crew and agency who gave me the opportunity to stand on the stage with my favorite songs, and to the seniors and viewers who gave me a lot of good words. It is a happy memory.”
Through this appearance, Denise not only announced her name as one of the group’s main vocals to watch but also promoted the Secret Number name to the public. She gathered praise from K-netizens and even made Secret Number trending at #10 on the Melon and Naver search!
Secret Number’s Denise Supported #BlackLivesMatter on Instagram
In June 2020, Denise decided to delete her personal Instagram account @denisethewenise, following Lea, Soodam, and Jinny, who closed the only social media account they had before officially debuting on May 19th, 2020.
The case of George Floyd, which occurred in Minneapolis, United States, due to police violence, drew condemnation from around the world. The public also expressed their concern through social media with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter over the following few days.
Following the public, Denise also used her personal Instagram account which had more than 190 thousand followers to spread the issue of racism #BlackLivesMatter. As we know, Denise was born and raised in the USA before pursuing her dream in South Korea. So, it is no wonder she felt emotionally close to this issue.
Through Instagram Story, she uploaded three different posts that speak about the issue.
In the first post, Denise uploaded a photo of light and dark-skinned hands while writing a caption, “Use your voice. Speak up for those who can’t.”
Then in the second post, she posted a photo of the late George Floyd followed by the caption, “This sort of thing shouldn’t happen again.”
Finally, Denise closes the stories by asking fans to make a donation to help people who are at risk for their lives in the US, “This is how you guys get to take action too. Please donate and do whatever it takes to help,” wrote Denise.
After her last posts in support of #BlackLivesMatter, fans then realized that Denise’s personal Instagram account (@denisethewenise) disappeared without a trace. Not only that, but Denise’s SoundCloud account (where she often uploaded her own covers and songs on the platform) was also inaccessible. Seeing this, fans began to speculate that this is how Vine Entertainment ‘punishes’ Denise for speaking up.
