Basically, the historical genre in Korean drama used to mostly present us the Joseon period. The Joseon period was one of the kingdoms in Korea, which existed for almost five hundred years. Why do historical dramas commonly use the Joseon period as the background? Well, the Joseon kingdom was the last dynasty in Korea, and was also the longest dynasty. The Joseon dynasty also quite popular in its era, so it’s no wonder that there’s a lot of historical dramas that have used it as the main background.

Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Review
Let’s take a look at the synopsis! Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People told us a story about Hong Gil-dong (played by Yoon Kyung-san), who was the second child from Hong Amogae’s family. Since he was young, he’s had a power, but his power was hidden to save his family. Hong Amogae’s family were slaves and lived under pressure from their master. Hong Amogae was trying to save his family from slavery.
One day, Hong Amogae was ordered by his master to sell a stale dried fish and in exchange for silk cloth. Of course, his commodity wouldn’t sell, but with his smart strategic thinking, Hong Amogae could still get the silk cloth. Hong Amogae joined a team of theives and gained a lot of treasure to free his family from their cruel master.
The problem came when their master was hurting Hong Amogae’s pregnant wife, causing her to go into labor and give birth before eventually dying. Hong Amogae was furious and killed his master with his own hands, not knowing that Hong Gil-dong witnessed the whole thing.
Hong Gil-dong became an adult and began stealing things from rich people and spreading his ill-gotten gains among the poor people. Hong Gil-dong also became the first revolutionary activist in the Joseon era. Hong Gil-dong used to have a relationship with Jang No-suk (played by Lee Ha-nui), but no one knew about that. Then, Hong Gil-dong was close with Ga Ryung (played by Chae Soo-bin). Ga Ryung always followed Hong Gil-dong everywhere he went. As time went by, both of them developed feeling towards each other.
Hong Gil-dong wasn’t alone when he did a mission to help the poor people. He was with his own team, who were like a family for him. Essentially, Hong Gil-dong ‘stole’ the people, themselves. Actually, he didn’t really steal them, instead he secretly saved them from being sent to prison.
One of the attractions of the drama was the relationship between Hong Gil-dong and his father; they had a strong relationship since Hong Gil-dong’s childhood. Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People also revealed Hong Gil-dong’s revenge to the kingdom. He was preparing his revenge through some spies with some of his father’s followers.

In the last episodes, most of the villains received their just rewards; the devil King Yeonsangun was replaced and received a punishment from the kingdom and from the villagers, including his spouse, Jang No-suk. At that moment, Hong Gil-dong and his team were looking at them. Eventually, both of King Yeonsangun and Jang No-suk died.
The relationship between Hang Gil-dong and Song Ga-ryung became more pleasant, Song Ga-ryung told Hang Gil-dong that she was pregnant, and both of them were happily waiting for their child.
The last scene in the last episode of Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People was where Song Ga-ryung was sitting and writing a storybook with the title Hong Chum Ji, and all of Hong’s family were standing next to each other and starring together towards Joseon from a far away.

Yoon Kyung-san as Hong Gil-dong
Yoon Kyung-san was cast as Hang Gil-dong. He was the child of a slave and lived under pressure. Since he was a child, he has magic power, but his family always kept it hidden for their own protection. When he became an adult, he had a couple of friends who helped him to save the poor people. They stole from rich people and gave it to the poor, and Hang Gil-dong also saved some innocent people from going to prison.
Chae Soo-bin as Song Ga-ryung
Chae Soo-bin was cast as Song Ga-ryung. She was one of Jang No-suk’s assistants. She met Hong Gil-dong and always followed him wherever he went. Eventually, Hong Gil-dong and Song Ga-ryung developed feelings towards each other. And also, through this role, Chae Soo-bin received a lot of attention!
Lee Ha-nui as Jang No-suk
Lee Ha-nui played the role of Jang No-suk. She used to have a relationship with Hong Gil-dong, but no one knew about that. Jang No-suk was King Yeonsangun’s spouse, but she was really loved Hang Gil-dong.
