Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People: Review

Let’s take a look at the synopsis! Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People told us a story about Hong Gil-dong (played by Yoon Kyung-san), who was the second child from Hong Amogae’s family. Since he was young, he’s had a power, but his power was hidden to save his family. Hong Amogae’s family were slaves and lived under pressure from their master. Hong Amogae was trying to save his family from slavery.

One day, Hong Amogae was ordered by his master to sell a stale dried fish and in exchange for silk cloth. Of course, his commodity wouldn’t sell, but with his smart strategic thinking, Hong Amogae could still get the silk cloth. Hong Amogae joined a team of theives and gained a lot of treasure to free his family from their cruel master.

The problem came when their master was hurting Hong Amogae’s pregnant wife, causing her to go into labor and give birth before eventually dying. Hong Amogae was furious and killed his master with his own hands, not knowing that Hong Gil-dong witnessed the whole thing.

Hong Gil-dong became an adult and began stealing things from rich people and spreading his ill-gotten gains among the poor people. Hong Gil-dong also became the first revolutionary activist in the Joseon era. Hong Gil-dong used to have a relationship with Jang No-suk (played by Lee Ha-nui), but no one knew about that. Then, Hong Gil-dong was close with Ga Ryung (played by Chae Soo-bin). Ga Ryung always followed Hong Gil-dong everywhere he went. As time went by, both of them developed feeling towards each other.

Hong Gil-dong wasn’t alone when he did a mission to help the poor people. He was with his own team, who were like a family for him. Essentially, Hong Gil-dong ‘stole’ the people, themselves. Actually, he didn’t really steal them, instead he secretly saved them from being sent to prison.

One of the attractions of the drama was the relationship between Hong Gil-dong and his father; they had a strong relationship since Hong Gil-dong’s childhood. Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People also revealed Hong Gil-dong’s revenge to the kingdom. He was preparing his revenge through some spies with some of his father’s followers.
