PSY, The Gangnam Style Phenomenon

Who does not know about “Gangnam Style?” Released in July 2012, PSY became a worldwide phenomenon due to his hit song titled “Gangnam Style,” which had been viewed by more than 3 billion people in the world.

On August 14th, just one month after its release, “Gangnam Style” ranked first on YouTube’s ‘Most Viewed Videos’ monthly chart; on August 21st, 2012, “Gangnam Style” officially charted No. 1 on the iTunes Music Video Charts, overtaking Justin Bieber’s “As Long as You Love Me” and Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake.” This feat was the first for a South Korean artist.

The “Gangnam Style” phenomenon has also popularized his older music videos, such as “Right Now.” Because of its phenomenon too, PSY had been invited in some of the variety shows not only in Korea but also in New York, America.

On September 14th, 2012, he appeared on The Today Show on NBC in New York City, performing the song live and teaching the dance moves to the anchors. As we already know, PSY’s “Gangnam Style” also has a unique and powerful dance moves.

The following day, PSY also made a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live, during a skit, featuring “Gangnam Style.” Commenting on his popularity among foreign celebrities, Psy said:

“When I realized that some top stars like haven’t even imagined have tweeted about me, I thought, ‘That’s a joke. That’s not gonna happen…’ I never expected things like this, not because they are top stars, but because this is the biggest market in the universe for pop music, right, so everybody’s dreaming about having an appearance in the U.S. So, I’m still thinking, ‘What going on here? This is beautiful.'”

His latest album, under the auspices of YG Entertainment, is his seventh studio album, 4×2=8, which was released on May 10th, 2017. The album reached his peak chart position on the 5th place in Korea, 268th place in Japan, and 5th place in the US World chart.

The album contains 10 tracks and has a total length of about 35 minutes. Many of the songs in the album are collaborations with some popular artist, such as Big Bang members G-Dragon and Taeyang, iKON members B.I and Bobby, Zico, Tablo, Lee Sung-kyung, and Park Jin-young as a producer. PSY performed the songs in his new album for the first time on SBS’s Inkigayo on May 14th and Fantastic Duo 2. He also promoted on the JTBC Knowing Bros show, and the MBC Radio Star show.

Not only he collaborated with many artists in the making of the songs, but he also collaborated in the making of the music videos for the tracks “New Face” and “I Luv It.” Actor Lee Byung-hun acted in the music video for “I Luv It,” while Apink’s Son Na-eun played the title role in the music video for “New Face.” The music videos reached 8 million views together within 14 hours, “I Luv It” surpassing 4 million views and “New Face” surpassed 3.7 million views. By January 2018 “New Face” had reached over 100 million views and “I Luv It” had reached almost 70 million views.

PSY’s Departure From YG Entertainment

After being under the auspices of YG Entertainment for 8 years, on May 15th, 2018, Psy officially left the label that walked together with him through the success of the breakthrough megahit “Gangnam Style,” and the follow-up tracks, like “Gentleman” and “Hangover.”

The departure of PSY from YG Entertainment was announced through an official statement, “YG Entertainment and PSY have decided to end their exclusive contract. After deep conversations with PSY, YG Entertainment decided to respect PSY’s thoughts of craving new challenges.”

The statement continued, “YG and PSY have been together with special trust for the past eight years. We provided endless support to PSY’s overflowing energy and passion for music, and we were also moved together as “Gangnam Style” gained worldwide popularity.”

In the end, YG closed the statement by saying, “YG and PSY’s close relationship will continue forever regardless of our exclusive contract. We are saluting PSY’s great new beginnings and wish for his health and happiness. We express our deep gratitude to the fans who have loved PSY as a YG artist until now.”

It is reported that after PSY left YG Entertainment, he made his own firm, namely P-Nation. He first announced the opening of his own company on January 24th, 2019, through his own social media, Instagram and Twitter.

He posted a photo showing the logo of P-Nation and wrote a caption written in Korean and English,

“I’ve established a company.
The name of which is P NATION.
I would like to share things that I’ve learned as a PD/manager/director of PSY for 19 years.
Allow me to make a playground for passionate players chasing their dreams with sweats!!^^ #pnation #피네이션”

After posting that, he posted a picture of Jessy signing a paper that looks like a contract. PSY signed Jessi on January 25th, 2019. He also signed both Hyuna and her partner, E’Dawn, formerly of Cube Entertainment and Pentagon on January 27th.
