It is inevitable that rumors and controversies must surround television programs, including Produce 101 Season 2. The first trainee to be involved in controversy was the winner of MMO’s Kang Daniel as he was indicated to have hinted “NEVER” as the song he would like to perform in the third evaluation by altering the number of cat emojis in his Instagram biography. As a result, he was banned from choosing the songs and moved to the “Open Up” team. The second trainee to be involved in controversy was YG K Plus’s Kwon Hyunbin who was seen as an unmotivated and spiritless trainee because he did not really participate in the group practice with “Sorry Sorry” Team 2. Kwon Hyunbin decided to delete all his Instagram posts due to the massive amount of negative comments.

The third trainee to be involved in controversy was Maroo’s Han Jongyeon who left the show due to accusations of bullying and sexual assault. One of his former classmates testified that Han Jongyeon once forced him to masturbate in front of his friends, forced him to fight with his friends, and locked him in the cleaning equipment room. Then, the fourth controversial trainee in Produce 101 Season 2 was Kiwi Media Group’s Kim Dongbin whose father asked Kim Dongbin’s fan club president to promote “NEVER” or “Open Up” as the concept song for Kim Dongbin. Similar to Kim Dongbin, Brand New Music’s Im Youngmin became the fifth Produce 101 Season 2 trainee who was involved in a controversy during the running of the show because of his brother who asked his friend to inform the fans about Im Youngmin’s preference for “NEVER” and “Oh Little Girl” for the third evaluation. Later, Im Youngmin was penalized with a different penalty during the following evaluation because the incident was not caught until after the concept evaluation recording.

Just like Han Jongyeon, The Vibe Label’s Ha Minho was also involved in a bullying scandal as he tried to harass his middle school ex-girlfriend sexually and engaged in sexual relationships with minor fans. The screenshots of Instagram and Facebook conversations were brought up, and as a result, he left Produce 101 Season 2 and canceled his contract with his home agency. Lastly, another trainee who had a rumor during the show is 2Y’s Lee Kiwon who hinted that he wanted to perform “Oh Little Girl” by posting “Oh Ki Won> Sa Ki Won Sam Ki Won Lee Ki Won” on Instagram. The following statement said that the post was actually made by his own agency so that Lee Kiwon’s popularity would increase because of the controversy.

Due to the enormous response of audiences both domestic and worldwide, Produce 101 Season 2 is considered the most successful television program in 2017. Therefore, it is to be expected that there will be other television programs imitating the format of the show. In South Korea, the imitations include KBS’s The Unit and jTBC’s Mix Nine. Internationally, an imitation show of Produce 101 Season 2 can be found in China as well, which is known as Idol Producer. The show is made by iQiyi and hosted by EXO’s Lay, which in China is known as Zhang Yixing. Other Chinese artists who are also Korean idols become mentors of the show, namely GOT7’s Jackson Wang, PRISTIN and I.O.I’s Joo Kyulkyung whose real name is Zhou Jieqiong, and WJSN’s Sungsoo whose real name is Cheng Xiao. After its first poster release, many people assumed that Idol Producer is the official Chinese version of Produce 101. However, Mnet has said that they are not involved in the production of Idol Producer. In detail, they stated, “The format of the variety program ‘Idol Producer,’ which is currently airing on iQiyi, features many elements that strongly resemble Produce 101, including its premise, structure, system, and visual design. This has created misunderstandings and speculation amongst both figures within the industry and viewers who are interested in Produce 101. After taking this into consideration, Mnet is formally clarifying that it did not participate in the production of iQiyi’s Idol Producer in any way, nor did it collaborate with the program in any fashion. At the same time, we would like to express that we consider the matter of infringement of Mnet’s critical intellectual property rights to be deeply unfortunate.

Not only for the official stuff, the trainees on Idol Producer even went as far as to plagiarize the style and choreography of Produce 101 Season 2’s trainees. As you can see in the above picture, there is a trainee whose fashion style copied Cube’s Lai Kuan-lin outfit which consists of a black jacket paired up with an orange shirt and pants and black sneakers. As for the choreography, the trainees of Idol Producer plagiarized the choreography of Produce 101‘s “Get Ugly”. Well, they may be great imitators, but no one can top the real and original, don’t you think?
