Despite the great reception, with the group’s debut EP reaching number one on the charts, Jinho did not do any further activities with the agency after the promotions for the group concluded that year.
In 2015, Jinho left SM Entertainment and began working as a singing tutor at Modern K Academy. Modern K Academy encouraged Jinho to audition at Cube Entertainment, their CEO has close connections with Cube Entertainment and had a hand in creating Pentagon, being in charge of talent development. Making it through the audition process Jinho participated in Pentagon Maker reaching to the final line-up and debuting with the group on October 10th, 2016.

Almost Being an EXO Member
Pentagon’s Jinho, previously known as a member of SM Ballad under the name Jino was supposed to initially debut with EXO in 2012. When he was 16 years old, he was recruited by SM Entertainment and took part in a singing contest held by the agency; he then managed to get the first place.
After being a trainee for two years, in 2010 he debuted with the SM sub-ballad unit, SM the Ballad, along with SHINee’s Jonghyun, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, and TRAX’s Jay Kim. Many rumors stated that Jinho would be part of the EXO line-up, considering he was one of the most popular and talented trainees. Fans speculated that the reason why Jinho did not join the group was that SM Entertainment wanted to maintain the number of members in each EXO-K and EXO-M balanced.
Jinho was one of the best singers at SM Entertainment, but the member of Pentagon decided to leave the label after seeing all his friends debut, and the next group will be created a few years later.
As soon as he learned that Cube Entertainment agency would be forming a new boy group, he decided to try his luck. He was first introduced as a Cube Entertainment trainee through the agency’s survival show Pentagon Maker, and eventually debuted with the group. Despite his decision to leave his first agency, Jinho still kept in touch with SM Entertainment and fellow artists under the auspices of SM Entertainment.
SM The Ballad’s Jino Finally Debuts With Pentagon
Cube Entertainment has just debuted its latest boy group. The Pentagon has 10 members, including Jinho, Hui, Hongseok, E’Dawn, Shinwon, Yan-an, Yeo-one, Yuto, Kino, and Wooseok.
The ten of them are a group formed from the Pentagon Maker survival show aired on Mnet. Of the ten Pentagon members, the presence of Jinho and Hongseok was the most interesting. Because both of them had joined the management labels of the big 3 in South Korea. Jinho, or Jino, is a former SM Entertainment assisted artist, while Hongseok was guided by YG Entertainment. Hongseok had even previously participated in the Mix & Match survival show but failed to debut with iKon.
Jinho has his own story. His singing career had started from around 6 years ago. Right through the mixed group that debuted under SM Entertainment named SM The Ballad. In the group, Jinho was the only trainee who had not officially made his debut. Jinho got the chance to join Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, SHINee’s Jonghyun, and Trax’s Jay Kim and they released a mini-album. SM The Ballad also had the chance to promote 2 of their songs in various Korean music shows.
Unfortunately, after SM The Ballad, Jinho did not officially debut. Jinho actually had a career in the musical field. After debuting with Pentagon, Jinho finally explained the reason for leaving SM Entertainment. “I was a trainee for 6 years at SM Entertainment, which is a very good company. But in the end, I thought that I had a different plan for me. So I chose to come out well. Then I got a call from Cube Entertainment and accepted the opportunity for auditions,” explained Jinho.
Netters still regret Pentagon’s Jinho did not debut with EXO
EXO debuted in 2012 as a 12-member group divided into 2 subunits, EXO-K and EXO-M. When the members were introduced through teaser videos, news circulated that Jinho, who had joined SM the Ballad, would debut together with the rest of the members of EXO. Jinho’s experience with SM the Ballad (at that time he still carried the name Jino) in 2010 made some fans believe that he would debut as one of the members of EXO. But in fact, from the 12 members, who debuted as part of EXO, there was no name for Jinho even though he was mentioned as one of the strongest candidates for debuting along with the other EXO members.
Not being debuted with EXO and no longer being part of SM the Ballad who made a comeback with a new formation in 2014, Jinho finally left SM Entertainment. The 1992-born guy then debuted as a Pentagon member in 2016. Until now, netters are still wondering why Jinho did not debut with EXO even though he once revealed that the reason for leaving SM Entertainment was because of differences in perspective. Nevertheless, some netizens suspect that he is not suitable for EXO’s image and his position has been replaced by other trainees.
“I admire him for his beautiful voice. I waited for his debut and I thought that he will debut at SM Entertainment. Too bad,” commented a netter. “If he wants to be a little more patient to wait a little while later he can debut at the Big 3 agency as an NCT member but that is his choice,” another netter said. “I heard that he didn’t make a debut because his voice type is the same as one of EXO’s vocalists and his image is not suitable. I support you!” added yet another.
But even though it’s regrettable that he didn’t debut at the Big 3 agency, Jinho now enjoys his role as the main vocalist of Pentagon and also the oldest member. In fact, according to some other netizens, he shines more as a main vocalist of the 10-member group formed by Cube Entertainment.
