Loona’s Pre-Debut Project

For the first time ever, BlockBerry Creative attempted a large-scaled pre-debut project that has never been done before in the South Korean music industry. The project known as Girl of the Month started in October 2016 and ran for 18 months, introducing each girl individually every month with their own solo releases and later grouped into sub-units.

The first girl to be introduced was Heejin. Her single album was released on October 5th, 2016, and contains two tracks, namely “ViViD” and the acoustic mix version of “ViViD.” Composed, written, and arranged by G-High, Choi Young-kyung (MonoTree), GDLO, and Park Ji-yoon, “ViVid” is a catchy song accompanied by trumpet, bass, and little bits of piano that goes smoothly with Heejin’s crisp voice. In addition, the music video of “ViViD” Acoustic Mix and photo shoot concept of Heejin’s single album was taken in Paris, France. Notably, the album has sold over 2,869 copies and peaked at #31 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #80 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The second girl to be introduced was Hyunjin. Her single album was released on November 18th, 2016, and contains two tracks, namely “Around You” and “I’ll Be There,” a duet with previous member Heejin. Composed, written, and arranged by Lee Juhyun, “Around You” is a slow song accompanied by the piano that suits Hyunjin’s soft voice, whereas “I’ll Be There,” which is the masterpiece of Artronic Waves and David Kater, is an upbeat track that showcases the youthful charm of Hyunjin and Heejin.

The music video of “Around You” and the photo shoot concept of Hyunjin’s single album was taken in Japan. In addition, the original film version of the music video comprises some scenes from Loona’s web drama which Hyunjin starred in. Notably, the album has sold over 3,271 copies and peaked at #28 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #65 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The third girl to be introduced was Haseul. Her single album was released on December 15th, 2016, and contains two tracks, “Let Me In” and “The Carol,” which were sung by Haseul and the two previously mentioned members, Heejin and Hyunjin. Composed, written, and arranged by Oreo and Wang Kim, “Let Me In” is a dramatic ballad song accompanied by orchestra instruments that showcase Haseul’s gentle yet daring voice, whereas “The Carol,” which is the work of G-High, Choi Young-kyung (MonoTree), and Park Asher, is a merry song with the usual elements that you will find in Christmas songs.

In addition, the music video of “Let Me In” and the photo shoot concept of Haseul’s single album were taken in Iceland. Notably, the album has sold over 3,545 copies and peaked at #35 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #63 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The fourth girl to be introduced was Yeojin. Her single album was released on January 16th, 2017, and contains three tracks, namely “Kiss Later” and “My Sunday,” which are sung by Heejin and Hyunjin, and “My Melody,” which is sung by Yeojin and Haseul. Composed, written, and arranged by Hwang Hyun (MonoTree) and Shin Annes, “Kiss Later” is a bubbly song that starts off with the jolly voice of Yeojin and the accompaniment of piano and trumpet, as well as the female backing vocals.

On the other hand, “My Sunday” and “My Melody” are literally the same songs with different lyrics that are composed, written, and arranged by GDLO, Shin Annes, Kim Yoo Seok, and Chu Dae Gwang (MonoTree), beating in uptempo that will calm your nerves. Notably, the album has sold over 4,476 copies and peaked at #21 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #59 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The fifth girl to be introduced was Vivi. Her single album was released on April 17th, 2017, and contains two tracks, namely “Every day I Love You” and “Every day I Need You,” which are actually the same song with a different beat and featuring different Loona members. Composed, written, and arranged by Child’s Play, Yoon Young-min, Kim Nam-young, and Melody Workshop, “Every day I Love You” is a buoyant song with simple lyrics and features the surprise participation of Haseul as a rapper.

On the other hand, “Every day I Need You,” which features Jinsoul, who was yet to be revealed, has a slower pace that suits a breezy day. In addition, the music video of “Every day I Love You” displays the brief appearance of Haseul, Hyunjin, Heejin, and Yeojin in roller skates, whereas the viewers are only able to spot Jinsoul’s blonde hair in “Every day I Need You” along with Vivi’s screen appearance which was shot in Hong Kong. Notably, the album has sold over 1,666 copies and peaked at #14 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #53 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The sixth member to be introduced was Kim Lip, who was also the first girl to show Loona’s different side in the Loonaverse. Her single album was released on May 23rd, 2017, and contains two tracks, namely “Eclipse” and “Twilight.” Composed, written, and arranged by Daniel Obi Klein, Charli Taft, Park Jiyeon, and Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), “Eclipse” is a tranquil electronic song that goes well with Kim Lip’s high-range voice and alluring dance, whereas “Twilight” is the work of Cha Cha Malone, Song Jieun, Kim Taeseong, and Lee Jieun, with slower beat yet intense feelings.

The same year, “Eclipse” was included in NASA’ YouTube playlist as the title that matches their Solar Eclipse playlist. Notably, the album has sold over 6,307 copies and peaked at #14 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #51 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The seventh girl to be introduced was Jinsoul. Her single album was released on June 26th, 2017, and contains two tracks, namely “Singing in the Rain” and “Love Letter,” which are sung in duet with previously mentioned member Kim Lip.

Composed, written, and arranged by Daniel Caesar, Ludwig Lindell, Nils Pontus Petersson, Karl Oskar-Julius Gummesson (Cage), Park Ji-yeon, and Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), “Singing in the Rain” emphasized the Future Bass as its genre, whereas “Love Letter,” which is the work of NOPARI (Monotree), Lee Ju Hyeong, Shin Agnes (MonoTree), and Park Ji-yeon (MonoTree), is a tuneful electronic song  that shows the harmony between two Loona members in their new universe. Notably, the album has sold over 4,636 copies and peaked at #18 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #56 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The eighth girl to be introduced was Choerry. Her single album was released on July 28th, 2017, and contains two tracks, “Love Cherry Motion” and “Puzzle,” which are sung in duet with previously mentioned member Jinsoul.

Composed, written, and arranged by Ollipop, Hayley Aitken, Kanata Okajima, Hwang Hyun (MonoTree), Shin Annes, “Love Cherry Motion” is an EDM song with impactful bass in its bridges, whereas “Puzzle,” which is the work of Daniel Obi Klein, Charli Taft, Andreas Oberg, Park Ji-yeon, and G-High, is a mid-tempo electronic song that suits your cozy afternoon. The music video of “Love Cherry Motion” is considered unique due to the usage of flipped camera direction that goes in harmony with Choerry’s animal representation as a fruit bat. Notably, the album has sold over 1,217 copies and peaked at #13 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart.

The ninth member to be introduced was Yves. Similar to Kim Lip, Yves was the first girl who revealed Loona’s third universe. Her single album was released on November 28th, 2017, and contains two tracks, namely “new” and “D-1.”

Composed, written, and arranged by Brooke Toia, Daniel Caesar, Ludwig Lindell, Park Ji-yeon (MonoTree), and Jaden Jeong, “new” is an eye-opener electronic accompanied by the heavy treble that drives you away from reality, whereas “D-1” is a slow track that showcases Yves’ raw voice and rapping abilities. Notably, the album has sold over 2,411 copies and peaked at #18 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #51 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart. Yves also sang “The Carol 2.0” with Vivi and Choerry, which is included as the only non-album single released by Loona.

The tenth girl to be introduced was Chuu. Her single album was released on December 28th, 2017, and contains two tracks, “Heart Attack” and “Girl’s Talk,” which are sung in duet with previously mentioned member Yves.

Composed, written, and arranged by Ollipop, Hayley Aitken, and Park Ji-yeon (MonoTree), “Heart Attack” is an exciting track that suits Chuu’s naturally adorable charm and showcases her talent as the future main vocalist of the group. On the other hand, “Girl’s Talk,” which is the work of G-High, and Go Eun (MonoTree), is an R&B track with the sweet harmony between Chuu and Yves. In addition, the music video of “Heart Attack” depicts the longing a girl has for another girl, implying that Loona supports LGBT rights through this song. Notably, the album has sold over 2,294 copies and peaked at #11 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart and #55 on Gaon Monthly Album Chart.

The eleventh girl to be introduced was Go Won. Her single album was released on January 30th, 2018, and contains two tracks, namely ‘One&Only” and “See Saw,” which is sung in duet with Chuu and features Kim Lip at the beginning of the song.

Composed, written, and arranged by Darren Smith, Tammy, and Park Ji-yeon (MonoTree), “One&Only” is a mid-tempo track with strange pace that somehow goes well with Go Won’s soft voice, whereas “See Saw,” which is the work of moonc and Rhoyzk is an electronic track with forceful vocals between Go Won and Chuu. In addition, the music video of “One&Only” holds certain significance regarding Loona’s third universe as there is a lot of symbolism shown in the clip. Notably, the album has sold over 5,269 copies and peaked at #13 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart

Finally, the twelfth and last girl to be introduced was Olivia Hye. Her single album was released on March 30th, 2018, and contains two tracks, namely “Egoist,” which features Jinsoul and “Rosy,” which is sung in a duet with previously mentioned member Go Won and features Heejin.

Composed, written, and arranged by Artonic Waves, LAB301, PABLO GROOVE, Park Ji-yeon (MonoTree), and Jaden Jeong, “Egoist” is a heavily-influenced bass track with rebellious nuance with the presence of Jinsoul’s rap in the bridge, whereas “Rosy” is a mid-tempo electronic song that combines Olivia Hye’s deep voice and Go Won’s tender voice along with Heejin’s featuring.

The music video of “Egoist” also went viral because of its final scene that shows the meeting between Heejin and Olivia Hye as the first and last Loona member. Notably, the album has sold over 8,801 copies and peaked at #11 on Gaon Weekly Album Chart.
