Kang’s Kitchen

Kang’s Kitchen is a cooking-travel-reality show. Season 1 was aired from December 5th, 2017 to January 9th, 2018, every Friday at 9.10 KST. Kang’s Kitchen is a spin-off of the popular variety show New Journey to the West and is directed by Na Young-seok. The filming of Season 1 took place at Hallym, Jeju Island, Korea. The average rating for all six episodes of Season 1 was 6.83%.

It was initially a challenge by director Na Young-seok to the Journey to the West Season 4 cast members. The cast members were challenged to start their version of Youn’s Kitchen and turn it into a success. Kang Ho-dong, restaurant owner and rookie Chef, operates the restaurant while members prepare the ingredients and serve food to the customers. Chef Kang’s main items on the menu are pork cutlet, omurice, noodles, and dried seaweed rolls. The main cast members of Kang’s Kitchen are Kang Ho-dong, Eun Ji-won, Lee Soo-geun, Ahn Jae-hyun, Song Min-ho, P.O, and Cho Kyu-hyum.

As the Main Chef and restaurant owner, Kang Ho-dong is responsible for cooking and preparing ingredients. He is the atmosphere maker that encourages his employees or shouts at them when a problem appears. In Episode 5, a group of junior high school wrestlers came to his restaurant. He treated his junior well and paid the entire fee instead of their teacher.

Kang’s Kitchen Season 2 returned with the same member line-up. The program was aired from May 31st to July 5th, 2019. The average rating for all six episodes is 6.78%. The main dishes were renewed and improved with a dessert menu. Instead of pork cutlet, the main dishes for Season 2 were: traditional Korean noodles, tteok-bokki, black bean noodles, kimchi fried rice, and black bean omurice. The dessert menu included Korean red bean ice-cream, mango parfait, and ice cream.

Cho Kyu-hyun joined Kang’s Kitchen Season 3 after finishing his mandatory military service. He was in charge of making pizza because he had learned to make pizza during his military service break. In Season 3, cast members focused on serving pizza as the main item on the menu. There were two pizza menus: a 60-cm single slice pizza called Kang Ho-dong pizza and six pizza pieces called Lee Soo-geun Pizza.

Kang’s Kitchen Season 3 spanned only four episodes and earned a 6.26% average rating. Season 3 was aired from July 12th to August 2nd, 2019, every Friday at 9:10 p.m. KST.

Cooking-variety shows are a trending genre in Korean variety shows. tvN and its creative director have produced popular and entertaining programs. However, the programs’ main themes are similar, and the cast members are usually reused with new and fresh additions. It was fun to watch tvN’s cooking-themed variety shows, but they may not reach a higher rating if a fresh concept and fresh members are not introduced.
