List of K-Pop Groups Formed After Appearing On a Survival Show: JBJ, I.B.I, MXM, and More

UNI.T is a girl group that was born through the survival show The Unit, just like UN.B. The group consists of nine members: Yang Ji-won, Woohee, Yoonjo, ZN, NC.A, Euijin, Yebin, Lee Hyun-joo, and Lee Su-ji.

UNI.T officially debuted by releasing their first extended play titled Line on May 18th, 2018, with the lead single “No More” which was composed by Shinsadong Tiger. Prior to their debut, UNI.T performed “No More” at the 2018 Dream Concert on May 12th. They made their debut stage on KBS’ Music Bank on the same day as the album’s release, in which they performed two songs: “A Memory Clock” and “No More.”

The group released their last album called Begin with the End on September 18th, 2018, with the lead single “I Mean” which was composed by Brave Brothers. On October 12th, 2018, the group performed “I Mean” and “Begin with the End” for the last time on Music Bank. On the same day, they also held their last fan meeting, after which they disbanded.

Different from the first season of Produce 101, this time they decided to form a boy group instead of a girl group. This survival show later formed Wanna One, an eleven-member group that was consisted of trainees from various entertainment companies. The group members are Kang Daniel, Park Ji-hoon, Lee Dae-hwi, Kim Jae-hwan, Ong Seong-wu, Park Woo-jin, Lai Kuan-lin, Yoon Ji-sung, Hwang Min-hyun, Bae Jin-young, and Ha Sung-woon.

Wanna One was first managed under YMC Entertainment, but in contrast to I.O.I, the members of Wanna One are not permitted to participate in other activities with their original agencies. Later, after the contract with YMC Entertainment expired, the group was managed under Swing Entertainment but would still maintain partnership with YMC.

Wanna One officially debuted at an event called Wanna One Premier Show-Con that was held on August 7th, 2017, at the Gocheok Sky Dome. The group also released their first extended play titled 1×1=1 (To Be One) on the next day, with their title song “Energetic.” They also released two music videos for their debut, which were “Energetic” and “Burn It Up.”

During their promotion, Wanna One didn’t only gain huge popularity, but also achieved many Newcomer awards from various award events, such as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, Seoul Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, and Gaon Chart Music Awards. Not only that, but Billboard also chose them as the Best New K-Pop Act of 2017.

The group’s contract was ended on December 31st, 2018. Wanna One concluded their activities with a final concert called Therefore that was held for four days, from January 24th to January 27th, 2019. The concert was held at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, where they had held their debut showcase.

JBJ is a project boy group consisting of six members who also participated in Produce 101 season 2, but failed to become the final members of the group to be debuted. The members of this group are Roh Tae-hyun, Kenta Takada, Kim Sang-gyun, Jin Longguo, Kim Dong-han, and Kwon Hyun-bin. The group’s name stands for “A Really Desirable Combination,” a Korean phrase which can also mean “Just Be Joyful.”

Before the group released their debut extended play, they aired the group’s first reality show called Just be Joyful JBJ on September 27th, 2017. Later, on October 18th, 2017, the group released their debut EP called Fantasy with the title song “Fantasy.” JBJ also held a debut showcase at Kore University’s Hwajung Gymnasium on the same day. The next day, JBJ performed their debut stage on Mnet’s M! Countdown by performing “Fantasy” along with another song titled ‘Say My Name.”

After releasing various albums and singles, JBJ officially concluded their activities by holding a final concert called JBJ Really Desirable Concert [Epilogue] as their last performance. The group officially disbanded on April 30th, 2018, due to members’ contract expiration with the company that manages the group, Fave Entertainment.

MXM is a duo that was managed under Brand New Music, consisting Brand New Boys’ Lim Young-min and Kim Dong-hyun who represented their agency alongside Lee Dae-hwi and Park Woo-jin from Produce 101 season 2.

The duo debuted officially in September 2017 with their first extended play titled Unmix. Their EP consisted of seven tracks, with the lead single “I’m The One” written and produced by Brand New Music producers 9999 and Esbee. The duo also participated in Brand New Music’s annual concert called Brand New World Seoul which was held at the Seoul Jangchung Arena.

Later, Lim Young-min and Kim Dong-hyun joined Brand New Music’s new boy group AB6IX in 2019.

Rainz is a boy group whose members used to participate in Produce 101 season 2 as contestants. The members of the group are Kim Seong-ri, Ju Won-tak, Lee Ki-won, Jang Dae-hyeon, Hong Eun-ki, Byun Hyun-min, and Seo Sung-hyuk. The group officially debuted on October 12th, 2017, by releasing their first extended play titled Sunshine. Besides releasing singles and albums, the group also contributed to singing a soundtrack for a drama called Hospital Ship, which was a song titled “Let It Go, Let It Be.”

Rainz officially disbanded after concluding their last group activities in Japan on October 28th, 2018. After the group disbanded, each member of Rainz returned to their respective agencies.
