Who Is 2NE1?

2NE1 was considered one of the most successful and popular girl groups in South Korea. The group’s name was initially announced as “21”, however, due to the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was quickly renamed “2NE1”. Formed by YG Entertainment in 2009, the group was composed of Bom, Dara, CL, and Minzy.

2NE1 was known for their unique and edgy style, therefore they garnered a strong reaction from fans around the world. Their first extended play, 2NE1 (2009), was received well and spawned the hits “Fire” and “I Don’t Care“, one of the biggest singles of 2009. It earned 2NE1 many awards and nominations.

But the fate of 2NE1, who have been on an indefinte hiatus since 2014, has been hanging precariously for quite some time after an extremely controversial ‘drug scandal’ was revealed to the public. As of May 2016, 2NE1’s exclusive contract with YG was over and seeing as Minzy was longer able to continue with the group, YG, along with the members, have decided to officially disband 2NE1 after many discussions.

2NE1 was considered one of the most successful and popular girl groups in South Korea. Having sold 66.5 million records, they are one of the best selling girl groups of all time. They won so many awards on the weekly music shows, and dominated almost all the big awards nominations including the Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Golden Disk Awards.

1) MNET Asian Music Awards MAMA (2009)

The 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) was the eleventh of the annual music awards in Seoul, South Korea that took place on November 21, 2009 at the Seoul Olympic Stadium. Despite being labelled as a newcomer, 2NE1 lead the nominations with 4 counts, followed by label-mate G-Dragon, soloist Baek Ji Young, and boy group 2PM with 3 each. At the end of the ceremony, 2NE1 received the most wins with 3 out of 4 including the Song of the Year daesang award. Next to them was boy and girl groups 2PM and Brown Eyed Girls respectively with 2 wins.

2NE1 won ‘Song of the Year’ with ‘I Don’t Care,’ and they stated:
“Thank you very much. Thank you to the people who loved ‘I Don’t Care’. There was a time when our members promised each other that we will get this award when we watch Big Bang receive it last year. We want to give our thanks to our boss, Yang Hyun Suk, who made us this pretty, and to the YG family.”

2NE1 performed “I Don’t Care”, “Kiss”, “You And I”, “Please Don’t Go”, and a special stage called 4th Wave: ’21st Street’ a Musical.

2) Melon Music Awards (2009)

At the red carpet of the Melon Music Awards 2009, which took place on 16th December, 2NE1 performed “Fire” and “I Don’t Care” alongside with the other performers. Even as a rookie group, 2NE1 has already made many hit songs and experienced explosive success with album sales and digital rankings. After the girls hit a total jackpot at MAMA, many fans are curious to see how many awards they will snag this time at the Melon Music Awards.

3) Style Icon Awards (2009)

Style Icon Asia is an awards ceremony held annually in South Korea since 2008 in order to showcase Asian fashion designers and to honor individuals who have made the most outstanding contributions in setting new paradigms and trends in fashion, broadcasting, culture and arts.

2NE1 won the Female Singer Award at 2009 Style Icon Awards. They faced some stiff competition up against the other nominees (Girls’ Generation, Son Dambi, Brown Eyed Girls and Kara), but in the end, the girls managed to pull it off. They arrived at the event in a limousine and then proceeded to rock the stage in sexy black outfits.

4) KBS & SBS Gayo Daejun (2009)

Gayo Daejun, is a major annual end-of-the-year music program broadcast by the South Korean public television network. Since the top singers are gathering together for the year-end ceremony, they do something meaningful on the stage. Sometimes the performers do cover songs, special stage, or even created super idol groups which consist of members from different idols groups labeled under the names (they recorded a new single and performed it together on stage at last).

5) MNET Asian Music Awards MAMA (2010)

The 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards was the twelfth of the annual music awards in Seoul, South Korea that took place on November 28, 2010, at The Venetian Macao in Macau, China. 2NE1 took home four awards, the most of the night, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

6) Melon Music Awards (2010)

The 2010 Melon Music Awards was held on December 15th at the Hall of Peace in Kyunghee University, and many top K-pop artists were in attendance. The awards ceremony is famed for calculating ONLY digital sales (80%) and online votes (20%) on Melon.com, and the final tally of those two factors will give the winners in the various categories. 2NE1 won a daesang for their album “To Anyone” on that night.

7) Style Icon Awards (2010)

Various top stars attended the “2010 Style Icon Awards” at the CJ E&M Center in Seoul on November 17th, which is an events show that awards celebrities who are considered to be one of Korea’s representative ‘Style Icons’ for 2010. 2NE1 performed “Can’t Nobody” and won the best female singer that night.

8) SBS Gayo Daejun (2010)

“2010 SBS Gayo Daejun” was hosted by Kim Heechul, Jung Yonghwa, Jo Kwon, and Hwang Jung Eum. The event took place on the evening of December 29th at the Ilsan KINTEX with the theme ‘Welcome to Music Factory’.

9) MNET Asian Music Awards MAMA (2011)

The 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards took place on November 29, 2011, at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The ceremony was the second Mnet Asian Music Awards to occur outside of South Korea, the first being in 2010 when the ceremony took place in Macau, China.

This year, the awards ceremony tried out something new by having 20 presenters instead of official MCs to host the show. These presenters were comprised of Korea’s top actors and TV personalities, who helped distribute the awards to the winning artists. 2NE1 won “Song of The Year” and “Best Female Group” award.

10) SBS Gayo Daejun (2011)

In the midst of numerous year-end events and programs, one that, perhaps, shines the brightest is the ‘2011 SBS Gayo Daejun’ which always presents itself with glitz and glamor. The Hallyu-themed show brought out a star-studded line-up of many of the biggest names and the most anticipated rookies in K-Pop on December 29, 2011.
