The Ups and Downs of Lim Na-young as a K-Pop Idol: ‘Produce 101’, I.O.I, Pristin

Pristin V

In early 2018, Im Na-young along with other Pristin members formed and debuted a subunit called Pristin V. They released their single “Get It.” PRISTIN V is PRISTIN‘s first subunit formed by Pledis Entertainment. The subunit consists of five members: Nayoung, Roa, Eunwoo, Rena, and Kyulkyung. PRISTIN V released their debut track on May 28th, 2018.

Pristin’s Official Disbandment and the Search For a New Agency

PRISTIN, the girl group under Pledis Entertainment has been officially declared disbanded only two years after debuting. PRISTIN is the second girl group that debuted under the auspices of Pledis Entertainment after their senior, After School. Out of a total of 10 members, 7 members have been known through the Produce 101 survival program, including Kyulkyung and Nayoung who even debuted with I.O.I.

The agency confirmed this and stated that there were three permanent members under Pledis Entertainment, which are Kyulkyung, Yehana, and Sungyeon. Meanwhile, the leader Nayoung along with six other members, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Xiyeon, and Kyla ended their contract.

Rumors of the disbandment of PRISTIN have actually been circulating since Kyla went on hiatus from group activities in October 2017 or about seven months after PRISTIN debuted. At that time, Pledis claimed that Kyla would take a short break due to health problems. Then, she returned to her hometown in the United States and did not return to Korea anymore. PRISTIN fans, HIGH, also thought this would happen. Because, for the past two years, PRISTIN did not do any group promotions. Finally, in May last year PRISTIN released their subunit called Pristin V and released the song “Like a V.”

According to the news, the members of PRISTIN and the agency went through various discussion processes before finally deciding to disperse. The management also released an official statement regarding the dissolution of PRISTIN. The following is the content of the statement:

Hello. This is Pledis Entertainment.

First, we sincerely thank fans who care for and love PRISTIN. We are delivering the official statement regarding the disbandment of PRISTIN and the termination of contracts for members.

The company and the members had in-depth discussions for a long time and deliberated before coming to a mutual agreement. It has been decided that with the exclusion of members Kyulkyung, Yehana, Sungyeon; seven members (Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Xiyeon, and Kyla) will have their exclusive contracts terminated as of May 24th, 2019.

We would like to first apologize to fans, who have always been supportive, for delivering this unfortunate news. Because this is a decision that must be made carefully, a lot of time was given in thinking about this matter. At the end of the discussions, we decided to respect the wishes of the PRISTIN members and came to the conclusion of disbandment and contract termination.

Members Kyulkyung, Yehana, and Sungyeon expressed their intent to stay with the company. We will actively support Kyulkyung, Yehana, and Sungyeon so that they can have stable individual activities. We will wholeheartedly support them so that they can be more active and have more diverse activities.

As for the PRISTIN members who will be leaving our agency, we would like to express our deep thanks to them and sincerely support them and their new paths even though their official contracts have ended.

Since this is an important and sensitive matter that required a careful decision, we sincerely apologize to fans for delivering this news late and worrying fans through this news. Lastly, we ask that fans show unchanging support for the seven PRISTIN members, Kyulkyung, Yehana, and Sungyeon as they embark on new beginnings.

Thank you.
