Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is a 2016 historical-fantasy television drama based on the Chinese novel Bu Bu Jing Xin. This drama was aired from August 1, 2016 to November 1, 2016 on SBS every Monday and Tuesday at 22:00 KST, for 20 episodes. Lee Joon-gi played as Wang So (later Gwangjong), the fearsome fourth prince of the Goryeo Dynasty.

During a total solar eclipse, a 21st-century woman named Go Ha-jin (played by Lee Ji-eun) is transported back in time to the Goryeo Dynasty. She wakes up in the year of 941 in the body of Hae Soo, among the many royal princes of the ruling Wang family. She initially falls in love with the gentle and warm-hearted eighth Prince, Wang Wook (played by Kang Ha-neul), and later Wang So (played by Lee Joon-gi), the fearsome forth Prince, who hides his face behind a mask and is given the label of “wolf dog.” As the story develops, Hae Soo finds herself unwittingly caught in the rivalry and politics among the princes over the fight for the throne.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo is based on the Chinese novel Bu Bu Jing Xin by Tong Hua (originally published online in 2005 on Jinjiang Original Network). The 2011 Chinese drama aired on Hunan Broadcasting System (HBS,) Scarlet Heart (Bu Bu Jing Xin), is also based on the novel. The drama received a lot of attention for its stellar cast, including Lee Joon-gi, Lee Ji-eun (IU), Kang Ha-neul, Hong Jong-hyun, Nam Joo-hyuk, EXO member Baekhyun, Girls’ Generation member Seohyun, and Ji-soo. The drama was popular overseas and received lots of love from international fans.

The last episode of the drama hit 11.3% in viewership, the highest episode from 20 episodes. Through this drama, Lee Joon-gi won the Top 10 Star Awards and Best Couple Awards along with Lee Ji-eun, and he was nominated for the Top Excellence Award, Actor in a Genre and Fantasy Drama at the 2016 SBS Drama Awards.

Criminal Minds is a 2017 action television drama based on an American television series with the same name, starring Lee Joon-gi, Son Hyun-joo, Moon Chae-won, Yoo Sun, Lee Sun-bin with Go Yoon, and Kim Young-chul. It was broadcast every Wednesday and Thursday from July 26 to September 28, 2017. at 22:50 KST on the cable channel tvN, with a total of 20 episodes. Lee Joon-gi played as Kim Hyun-joon, a police officer who joined the NCI at the recommendation of Kang Ki-hyung.

The drama follows a group of highly-trained profilers in the fictional National Criminal Investigation (NCI) team who track down criminals to solve cases. It begins a year after a crucial error results in a bomb detonating at a hospital, killing several SWAT officers and leaving the NCI team leader Kang Ki-hyung’s (played by Son Hyun-joo) confidence badly shaken. He returns to work after a long break and is immediately drawn into a serial murder case which requires the NCI team to collaborate with the local police agency’s Violent Crimes Unit. They meet the temperamental police officer Kim Hyun-joon (played by Lee Joon-gi), who appears to have a bitter grudge against Ki-hyung.

Criminal Minds is Lee Joon-gi’s first non-historical drama after the 2013 MBC drama Two Weeks. The series was originally scheduled to be on KBS2, but because of the change of the producer, in the end it was aired on tvN.

Through this drama, Lee Joon-gi won an award at the 2nd Asia Artist Award in the Fabulous Award category. The premiere of Criminal Minds was well-received, with a nationwide 4.2% rating in viewership, the highest rating of 20 episodes.

Lawless Lawyer is a 2018 legal-thriller television drama starring Lee Joon-gi, Seo Ye-ji, Lee Hye-young, and Choi Min-soo. It aired from May 12 to July 1, 2018 on tvN every Saturday and Sunday at 21:00 KST, with a total of 16 episodes. Set in a fictional city named Kisung, which was described as lawless and corrupt, Lee Joon-gi played as Bong Sang-pil, a former-gangster-turned-lawyer who takes advantage of loopholes in the law and boasts an excellent win rate.

When Bong Sang-Pil was a kid, he lived with his mother in Gisung. One night, Bong Sang-Pil witnessed his mother get killed by Judge Cha Moon-Sook’s subordinate (played by Choi Min-Soo). Bong Sang-Pil got out of Gisung and went to live with his gang-boss uncle, Choi Dae-Woong (played by Ahn Nae-Sang). Bong Sang-Pil decided to become a lawyer to take revenge on those responsible for his mother’s death.

Eighteen years later, Bong Sang-Pil (played by Lee Joon-gi) works as a lawyer. He sees the news on television that a detective was arrested for killing the mayor of Gisung. The detective holds a key to the murder of Bong Sang-Pil’s mother. Bong Sang-Pil returns to Gisung for the first time in 18 years and opens up a law office there. Meanwhile, Ha Jae-Yi (played by Seo Ye-Ji) is a lawyer with integrity. She beats up a judge in court and gets her law license suspended. Ha Jae-Yi returns to her hometown of Gisung. There, Bong Sang-Pil approaches Ha Jae-Yi and gets her to work at his law office. Bong Sang-Pil holds a secret related to the death of Ha Jae-Yi’s mother.

Lawless Lawyer reunited Lee Joon-gi and director Kim Jin-min, they had previously worked together in the 2007 MBC drama Time Between Dog and Wolf. Lee Joon-gi won the Best Male Asian Star on the 2018 StarHub Night of Stars. The drama’s latest episode hit the highest rating out of all the 16 episodes, with nationwide 8.9% in viewership.
