Lee Byung-hun is a Korean actor who is known for his roles in movies and dramas. Among his best movies are Joint Security Area (2000); The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008); Masquerade (2012), Inside Men (2015) and Master (2016). His acting career started after he participated in a KBS Talent Audition. He debuted by appearing in SBS’s drama Asphalt Man in 1995, but gained popularity after appearing in Joint Security Area in 2000.

Lee Byung-hun gained more popularity after his movie and drama performances earned him a collection of awards. In 2005 and 2008, his performances in A Bittersweet Life and The Good, the Bad, the Weird caught the attention of the global movie industry. His success in the mega-hit drama Iris and movie Masquerade catapulted him to global stardom. On June 23, 2012, Lee Byung-hun and legendary Korean actor, Ahn Sung-ki became the first Koreans to leave prints at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. He was selected as a new member of AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) and became the first Korean to present an Oscar award at the annual Academy Awards show.

The Magnificent Seven

The Magnificent Seven is an Western-themed action film which was released in 2016. The movie is a remake of the 1960 version of film. Both movies were inspired by the 1954 movie, Seven Samurai. Denzel Washington, Christ Pratt, and Lee Byung Hun were among the stars who played leading roles in the movie.

A vicious tycoon, Bartholomew Bogue, took control of the small frontier town of Rose Creeak, forcing its residents to work as unpaid labor in his mines. He killed a group of rebellious townspeople led by Matthew Cullen. Mathew Cullen’s widow planned revenge and gathered forces by recruiting U.S Marshal Sam Chrisholm, who sought to avenge the death of his family, who were murdered by Bougue’s soldiers. Chrisholm recruited gambler Joshua Faraday, Mexican criminal Vasquez, marksman Goodnight Robicheaux, Robicheaux’s partner Billy Rocks, hunter Jack Horne, and Indian warrior Red Harvest. The magnificent seven managed to kill Bogue and wiped out his entire troop at the cost of their own deaths.

Lee Byung-hun played Billy Rocks, a Korean assassin and Robicheaux’s friend, played by Ethan Hawke. Lee Byung-hun said that his character was stylish and weighty. He recalled that the filming set, a natural swamp, was filled with snakes and other animals. He cherished his time performing with the Hollywood actors, especially Ethan Hawke, his companion in the movie. Lee Byung-hun said that he is a fan of Ethan Hawke and being able to film a movie with him was a great experience. They became good friends off-screen and went out for drinks after the filming.

During an interview, Lee Byung-hun said that his character, Billy Rocks, was very physical and he underwent a lot of physical training, such as horse riding and knife throwing. In one scene, he had to throw dynamite and run before it exploded. However, he enjoyed filming with legendary actors like Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. The weather and scenery during the filming was also very nice. Viewers enjoyed Lee Byung-hun’s role in Magnificent Seven, especially his bromance with Robicheaux.



Misconduct is an American thriller movie which was released in February 2016. Josh Dushamel, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkinsm and Lee Byung-hun performed in the conspiracy movie. The movie failed to please the audience and received bad reviews.

Arthur Denning is the executive of large pharmaceutical company. He controlled his girlfriend, Emily Hynes. Emily Hines set a scene to blackmail her rich boyfriend. She contacted her former boyfriend, Ben Cahill, a young and ambitious lawyer, and convinced him to start a lawsuit against Arthur Denning for an illegal drug trial. Ben Cahill and his boss, Charles Abrams, filed a lawsuit against the company executive. Both parties agreed on a settlement, but Cahill was set up for a murder. The dead body of Emily Hines was placed at Cahill’s house. An assassin, played by Lee Byung-hun, was sent to Cahill’s house to murder him. It turned out that Charles Abrams was Arthur Denning’s lawyer and the lawsuit was settled to avoid punishment.

The director of Misconduct, Shintaro Shimosawa, was a fan of Lee Byung-hun’s movies and he wanted to work with him. Lee Byung-hun was cast to play an assassin who was sent to murder the leading actor. Lee Byung-hun said that he decided to participate in the movie because it would give him the opportunity to work with the legendary actor, Al Pacino. Pacino is one of the reasons he chose acting as his career. Initially, he didn’t have a scene with the American actor, but he asked the director to create a scene where Lee Byung-hun met Al Pacino. He was very nervous during filming the scene with the legendary actor and it took several takes to complete.

Lee Byung-hon played an assassin who wanted to kill the lawyer. While chasing the lawyer, he rode a motorcycle and dressed all in black. He doesn’t have many lines, but he was able to give tense scenes when he was approaching the lawyer.

Terminator Genisys

Lee Byung-hun took part in the 5th installment of the Terminator franchise. Terminator Genisys is an American sci-fi action movie which was released in 2015. The film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emiliea Clarke, and Lee Byung-hun.

Not so far in the future, John Connor, leader of the Resistance movement, confronted Skynet, an artificial intelligence system. Skynet set a time machine and sent a terminator to the past to kill John Connor’s mother, Sarah. John Connor’s confidant, Kyle Reese, was sent to the past to protect Sarah. Sarah and Kyle had to survive and escape from terminator T-1000, played by Lee Byung-hun, who was sent to kill Sarah and Kyle. T-1000 is an emotionless killer android who was made of liquid metal and able to change its shape.

During an interview, Lee Byung-hun told viewers that he was called terminator when he was a little kid because he won arm-wrestling competitions. He also said that he admired Arnold Schwarzenegger’s charisma very much. Lee Byung-hun met Arnold in Korea in 2010 when Arnold was the governor of California. Arnold selected Lee Byung-hun to become a California Tourism Ambassador. When Lee Byung-hun met Arnold on the set of the movie, with makeup on, Lee was awed by Arnold’s charisma even though the actor was 30 years past his original terminator role. Terminator fans enjoyed Lee’s emotionless character very much. Lee performed as a killer android very well, with his facial expression. He said that he and the dirctor talked about the role a lot, especially his movements and his expression-less character.

Red 2

Red 2 is an American action movie released in 2013 and based on a comic series. The movie’s cast includes many members of Hollywood’s A-list, such as Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lee Byung-hun, Helen Mirren, and Anthony Hopkins. This action-packed and globetrotting action movie failed to capture the success of the 2010 Red.

Retired CIA agent Frank Moses lived a normal life with Sarah Ross. Suddenly, Marvin Boggs met Frank Moses and told him about a portable nuclear weapon that was smuggled and hid in Russia. International spies flocked to Russia to retrieve the weapon. The trio cooperated with Katja, a Russian spy, to search for another Russian agent who had the information about the nuclear weapon. They found the weapon’s inventor and found out that the weapon was hidden in the Kremlin. Another spy, Korean Han Cho Bai, joined the team to retrieve the weapon. The global super team must recover the weapon and survive from being hunted down by the dangerous killer, Jack Horton.


During an interview, Lee Byung-hun was asked about his role in Red 2. He said that in action movies, every action and move was trained and prepared to make a good scene and avoid injuries. He said that he enjoyed filming with Bruce Willis because he was open to any discussion about filming every scene. Regarding filming a scene with movie legend Helen Mirren, he said that he was nervous and honored to be shooting a scene with her, but she made him relax and enjoyed the scene. He said that being a rookie actor in Hollywood, it was a dream to be able to shoot movies with legendary Hollywood royalty.
