Kyulkyung’s rank on episode 10 was in a dangerous spot, since she was then ranked 19th. Fortunately, on the last episode, she made it get back to sixth place. The group I.O.I was set to be 11 members, so she got the chance to debut with them. Her position in this group was as lead dancer, vocalist, and visual. As you know, she’s famous for her beautiful face and body.
Now let’s check out Kyulkyung’s transformation in the I.O.I era.
Crush‘s first performance was the last episode of Produce 101. The song was the last assessment for the remaining 22 trainees. Kyulkung wore her straight, black hair down, with a nice little gold cross choker around her neck. She wore a colorful top with a white bottom. At first, Crush was set to be the debut song for the winners of the series, but Mnet decided that Crush would be released as a pre-debut single by I.O.I after the show’s conclusion. I.O.I then released a music video of this song. There’s no special concept in this MV. All the I.O.I members wore casual outfits and simple makeup, and it was shot in the recording studio. Kyulkyung wore a yellow, long-sleeved top and ripped jeans, paired with black sneakers. She just casually left her wavy hair loose. Check out both version here!
I.O.I officially debuted with Dream Girls on May 4th, 2016. This song is the lead track of their first mini-album, Chrysalis. It’s about not to giving up with your dream. I.O.I encouraged us to keep trying, saying it’s okay if you are a little slower than other people as long as you keep trying. This message is shown on their music video, where every member is chasing a different dream and they are showing their efforts to achieve it. Kyulkyung turns into beautiful ballerina here. She wore her hair in a bun, which made her small face look more beautiful.
The group outfit concept here was sporty and cheerful. Kyulkyung wore a pink crop top and pink skirt, with a cute blue hair clip. Her hair color is still black in this era. To make her look more cheerful, the makeup artist added a pop of color on her eyes with red eye shadow. She also added blue sweatbands on her wrist and thigh.
I.O.I announced that they would be forming a subunit of the group, consisting of seven members. Kyulkyung was one of the members that was chosen, along with Nayoung, Chungha, Sohye, Yoojung, Doyeon, and Somi. Finally, on August 9, they officially released the single Whatta Man. This song is a remake of “Whatta Man” by Salt ‘N’ Pepa, which, in turn, is sampled from Linda Lyndell’s “What a Man.” With this song, I.O.I got their first win in a music show, on The Show on August 16, and followed it by other wins. The total number of wins they got in this era is five.
I.O.I snatched fans’ wiga with this concept. They transitioned from the fresh and cheerful concept they had been using to a mature, fierce girl-crush concept. Many people fell in love with their black leather outfits, with the harnesses as eye-catching accessories, and sexy makeup. Her long eyelashes is her signature look in this era. She also dyed her hair rose pink in this era, which we have never seen before, and it suits her perfectly. What is more surprising is Kyulkyung hitting a few high notes in this song. Very Very Very
On October 16th, I.O.I came back with the full complement of members to promote the new song, Very Very Very. This song was the title song of the last album before their disbandment, Miss Me?. The song was produced by JYP Entertainment, so we don’t have to wonder why the song is so catchy. The choreography was easy to follow, which make this song one of everyone’s favorites at the time. The story that this song wants to tell is about a girl who wants her crush to be absolutely, positively, one hundred percent sure that he really, really, really likes her. Fun fact, you will hear “너무” and “자꾸” 76 times in this song.
The concept of the song is cute and adorable. What made it kind of disappointing is how similar the outfits in this video were to those in their first song, Dream Girls. The sporty look with the mix of two colors, red and white, and sweatbands. Fortunately, there was a new look for Kyulkyung. She dyed her hair light brown, which suited her skin tone perfectly. To make her looks cuter, the hairstylist made a little ponytail with a touch of red flannel bow. She definitely looks really cute here.
