From T-ARA to Rainbow: Here’s A List Of K-Pop Groups That Debuted In 2009

The year of 2009 was indeed the year of girl groups. So many successful Korean girl groups were born this year, including the TS Entertainment group Secret. The group debuted with four members: Jun Hyo-seong, Jung Ha-na, Song Ji-eun, and Han Sun-hwa with “I Want You Back” on October 13th, 2009.

Their debut was not too powerful as it didn’t meet tremendous success. However, in 2010 the group started to gain popularity as they released hit songs such as “Magic” and “Madonna” which forecast their unique yet retro image. Their songs started to top the Gaon charts and became a public favorite for the catchy hook. Following this, their 2011 release “Starlight Moonlight” received the same response.

The group became shaky when in September 2016, Sunhwa announced that she would be departing from the group. The reason was reported because of TS Entertainment’s unfair contract with the members. Following Sunwa, leader Hyosung and Jieun also left the label and even sued the label on contract and payment matters.

Though the group is parting, the members remain in a strong friendship. Each of them is now in pursuit of a solo career: Han Sun-hwa and Song Ji-eun both jumped into acting, and Hyosung’s continuing her solo music career. There hasn’t been any news on Hana’s recent whereabouts.

Rainbow initially garnered attention and expectation for having to debut under DSP Media, the same agency in which the girl group KARA was in. The group debuted with seven members (Woori, Seungah, Jaekyung, Noeul, Yoonhye, Jisook, and Hyunyoung) and released their first mini-album Gossip Girl on November 12th, 2009. Their debut single didn’t meet much success but when they released their single “A” a year later, the group started to thrive.

During their active years, the group released a total of two studio albums and five EPs, and has been doing well on the Gaon charts. The group also has two subunits: Rainbow Pixie, and Rainbow Blaxx.

Unfortunately, on October 27th, 2016, it was announced that Rainbow would disband because the members decided not to renew their contracts after seven years because their contracts expired. Currently, the members are on their respective paths, with the majority of them pursuing acting: Jisook has continued with solo music, No-eul recently took part in BNT International, Woori is now promoting as Go Na-eun and has starred in multiple dramas and films; Hyunyoung is busy with her work on musicals, Seung-ah and Jae Kyung both won awards at the 2018 MBC Drama Awards for their great skills.
