Who doesn’t know the legendary K-Pop girl group 2NE1?

There are too many awards and achievements of this group that earned them the title ‘queens.’ They offered a fresh and new atmosphere in the K-Pop scene as they were not afraid to show their unique colors and style. Contrary to most girl groups that have a feminine concept, the group appeared boldly with their edgy concept and hairstyles.

Bom, CL, Dara, and Minzy shook the K-Pop stage as they displayed their energetic and fiery music with their debut song “Fire” on May 17th, 2009, during the broadcast of the SBS Inkigayo. Prior to their debut, they drew the public’s attention when they appeared in a promotional single for LG Electronics, “Lollipop,” alongside their fellow YG Entertainment mate, Big Bang. From then, the group started to actively release music with two eponymous extended plays: 2NE1 (2009) and 2NE1 (2011), and two studio albums: To Anyone (2010) and Crush (2014). All of their hit songs such as “Try to Follow Me,” “Go Away,” “Lonely,” “I Am the Best,” “Ugly,” “I Love You,” “Falling in Love,” “Missing You,” and “Come Back Home,” have successfully done well and reached the number one position on the various music streaming charts.

Not only in Korea, but the group also had an astounding achievement in neighborhood country Japan with one EP Nolza (2011) and two studio albums Collection (2012) and Crush (2014). During their active years, 2NE1 were named as one of the best K-Pop girl groups of the past decade by Billboard magazine and one of the best selling girl groups of all time due to its success in selling over 66.5 million records.

Starting in 2014, the group’s strong popularity had to come to a halt when Park Bom announced hiatus due to health reasons. As the three members went on with their respective activities, the group was put on a hiatus until 2015, when they performed their major songs at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Nobody knew it at that time, but this was their last live performance as the four-membered girl group 2NE1.

YG Entertainment released an announcement regarding Minzy’s departure in April 2016. Initially stating that 2NE1 would promote as a three-membered group from then on, YG Entertainment surprised fans when a few months later announced 2NE1’s disbandment. With Minzy and Bom not renewing their contract, only CL and Dara stayed with the agency. Shortly before their disbandment, the three members released a farewell single, “Goodbye,” as a gift to their fans.

Although each of the members went on pursuing a solo path, their friendship has remained strong ever since. In 2019, Minzy finished her first North American tour and released her first English single. Meanwhile, Sandara is actively undertaking an MC endeavor as she has become the host of Video Star. Park Bom is also slowly recovering as she was set to have a comeback in March 2020, with Sandara features confirmed. Meanwhile, CL is still attending fashion events and preparing her next piece of work with YG Entertainment.

One more K-Pop boy group who fills the glory era in 2009, and they are MBLAQ! Their name was supposed to be an acronym for Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality, and the group debuted under J. Tune Camp and was mentored by legendary K-Pop solo artist, Rain. The group consists of 5 original members: Seungho, G.O, and Mir, Lee Joon, and Thunder.

They released their debut single album, Just BLAQ, which instantly become a hit on various online and offline South Korean music charts, on October 14th, 2009. A day after, the group made a debut live performance at Rain’s Legend of Rainism concert on October 15th, 2009.

Since then, the group has been praised for its well-executed performances often doing very well on music charts. Their first extended play album, Y, was released on May 19th, 2010, and their first studio album, BLAQ Style, was released January 10th, 2011. They rose and have maintained their popularity ever since. Some of their biggest hit songs include tracks “Y,” “Cry,” and “This Is War.”

During their active years, they won various prestigious awards, such as the Golden Disk Award, the Mnet Asian Music Award, and the Asia Song Festival. They also appeared in numerous variety shows such as Mnet’s Celebrity Goes To School, KBS’ MBLAQ’s Hello Baby, and MBC’s Idol Show.

Sadly, on December 16th, 2014, it was announced that Joon and Thunder would be leaving and would be focusing on individual activities, leaving the three remaining members to promote as a group. Since their departure, the group continued on and released their eighth (and last) EP Mirror. From then on, the group has gone into hiatus with each of the members pursuing solo activities: Seungho starred in a musical theater, Lee Joon is actively pursuing acting, G.O became a YouTuber and launched a YouTube channel with his girlfriend, Mir is active in variety shows, and Thunder established his own independent label.
