Kim Dong-wan’s Abs
As a male celebrity in the Korean entertainment industry, it feels obligatory that one should take care of their body shape. This undeclared rule applies to Kim Dong-wan as well. Even though has a relatively short height for a man (171 cm), Kim Dong-wan has a great body posture and even abs to be proud of.
Kim Dong-wan’s Military Service
Just like any grown-up man in South Korea, Kim Dong-wan has to serve to his beloved country, South Korea through military service. He began his enlistment as a public service officer on 17 November 2008 at Chungnam’s Gongju Army Training Center for a 4-week basic military training course. Notably, Kim Dong-wan is the second Shinhwa member who went to enlist after the group’s leader, Eric Mun. Before his enlistment, Kim Dong-wan spent his time with family and Shinhwa members for a simple sending-off dinner. Unfortunately, all of the Shinhwa members were not able to attend Kim Dong-wan’s military send-off.
After a long period of military service, Kim Dong-wan finally completed his obligation to serve the country on 7 December 2010. He greeted and met the fans and journalists for a half-hour, receiving a lot of gifts and hugs. Kim Dong-wan immediately went back to his job, as he held a fan meeting two days later on 9 December. During the event, he also revealed that he will continue to act and sing, releasing a solo debut album in Japan titled Kim Dong-wan Japan Premium Best on 15 December.
Kim Dong-wan’s Scandal
Back in July 2009, Kim Dong-wan was being highlighted for his criticism towards Shinhwa member Lee Minwoo’s ex-girlfriend, Amy. After the break up, Amy gave some controversial statements about Lee Min-woo’s behavior, which Kim Dong-wan could not ignore anymore. Despite having already entered his military service, Kim Dong-wan made the time to write a post on his personal blog entitled ‘Amy’ which stated, “Even when watching (the way you act) from a far distance, your actions were always different and weird. Forgive Min-woo for not being able to understand the world you live in, and try to understand him. Don’t go around telling others, even in a personal conversation, that all Min-woo has been doing is making excuses (in order to absolve himself from the situation). Like you would know (him) better than all of us that have been together (with Min-woo) for the past 12 years. And, to see that, the Min-woo we know, has been giving you excuses, I am certain and can confide that he felt that much difficult to be around you. In the future, when you have interviews, leave out any topics that have to do with Min-woo. Talking about your estranged lover, publicly, even if the person isn’t a celebrity is not just unsensible and ignorant but sleazy and shoddy behavior”.
Kim Dong-wan’s blog entry received the mixed response from the netizens. Some of them said that Kim Dong-wan should not have interfered, even if he thinks that Amy is wrong to accuse Lee Min-woo of the appalling allegation. In addition, the negative feedback from the netizens also stated that Kim Dong-wan should have focused on his military service instead. On the other hand, the netizens who agreed with Kim Dong-wan’s action said that Amy indeed deserved to be called out like that, because her action does not reflect what the adults should have done after breaking up. Moreover, that fact that Kim Dong-wan took his free time to defend Lee Min-woo also shows that Shinhwa members have a true friendship with each other.
Besides calling out the ex-girlfriend of his groupmate, Kim Dong-wan was also involved in the talk of fandom color in 2015. At that time, iKON, who were just a rookie boy group, were in talks to use orange as their fandom color, which is actually the color of Shinhwa Changjo, the fan club of Shinhwa. Despite his initial statement that colors are not owned by anyone, Kim Dong- still emphasized that orange is Shinhwa’s fan club color that has been used, so there is an unspoken rule that it cannot be used by other groups. Many netizens stated their disappointment, because even though Kim Dong-wan is already considered as a senior in the entertainment industry, he is still debating over trivial matters like the color. On the other hand, Shinhwa Changjo defended Kim Dong-wan, because orange has already been known as the official color of their fan club.
Kim Dong-wan’s Donation
Despite having been involved in trivial ‘scandals’ (which were actually not even that scandalous), Kim Dong-wan’s reputation is still more known to the brighter side as he is often reported to have regularly donated to charitable causes. His donation of 40 million won (approximately $38,000) to the charity group, House of Sharing, which provides residence and support for women who were forced into prostitution during World War, is considered as a big help by the public. In the previous years, Kim Dong-wan has donated to the same group for 30 million won (approximately $29,000) in both 2013 and 2014, which in total that he has donated for 100 million won (approximately $90,000). Regarding his donation for the comfort women, Kim Dong-wan stated, “I hope that my contribution will help support the comfort of women and their persistent efforts to shed light on Japan’s flawed historical standpoint. The controversial issue of comfort women continues to hinder the positive development of Korea–Japan relations, especially as the Japanese government has yet to issue an official apology.”
Not only doing donation for comfort women, Kim Dong-wan also has donated to various organizations to help the victims of destructive events, such as the Yeonpyeong Island bombing, Japan earthquake in 2011, Super Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines in 2013, and Nepal earthquake in 2015. He has donated 36 million won (approximately $33,660) towards the relief fund. In 2016, Kim Dong-wan donated 46 million won (approximately $40,285) to the Green Umbrella Child Fun in support of unwed mothers. Back in 2015, he had also made a donation towards supporting disadvantaged children for the winter season. Not only having made financial donations, Kim Dong-wan has also volunteered in year-end charity projects to deliver coal briquettes to underprivileged households. During his appearance on MBC’s talk show Radio Star, Kim Dong-wan stated, “When people make donations, they worry about whether all the funds go towards the cause, and I do too. So by saying this out, I hope that the donations are used properly.”
