A Remake of American Drama, Entourage
Are you familiar with the American dramedy television series Entourage? It’s a popular television series that has swept many awards and was nominated for many awards categories in various events. It also had received positive reviews from critics during the majority of its run. In Korea, there is a remake of the series that was aired on tvN, with the same title. But, quite in contrast with its original series, it received a low rating despite the promising actors who starred in it and a good story line. Are you curious about the Korean version of Entourage? Let’s take a look at it!
The Story Follows a Rising Movie Star and His Entourage
Entourage is a story that follows a rising movie star, Cha Young-bin, and his entourage. His entourage includes his three best friends: Lee Ho-jin, who now acts as his personal manager, Cha Joon, who used to be an idol member and is now struggling to get more fame, and Geo-book, his and Lee Ho-jin’s childhood friend, and the CEO of his company, Kim Eun-gab. Together, they make their way through the entertainment industry, relishing all the perks along their way.
Unlike the original series, the drama received a low ratings in Korea. Some have argued that it was because the series differs from the usual Korean dramas, particularly with its black humor and, maybe, its American vibe. The drama also got a bit boring in the middle of the story, but it had its attractive points and story line. Besides that, the diverse personalities of each character adds spice to the drama, and there are bromance moments that you could expect to see in the drama!
Here are a few scenes you can find in the drama:
Entourage uses a number of well-known actors for its cast. Let’s take a look at the five characters that become the ccenter of this drama!
The first one is Seo Kang-joon, who acts as Cha Young-bin. Cha Young-bin is a rising superstar who’s still in his 20s and is known for his handsome looks. Even though he’s popular, he’s a vapid actor with delusions of artistic grandeur and has his own idealism about the types of movies he wants to star in.
The second is Park Jung-min, who acts as Lee Ho-jin. Lee Ho-jin is Cha Young-bin’s best friend who gets thrown into the entertainment world when Cha Young-bin becomes a star. In the series, he works as Cha Young-bin’s personal manager, but is treated badly by the agency CEO, which caused him to be skeptical about his job.
The third is Lee Kwang-soo, who acts as Cha Joon, Cha Young-bin’s cousin. He’s a former member of Sugar Boys, an idol group who made their debut in the late 90s. Currently, he’s working as an actor who is struggling and desperate for more fame.
The fourth is Lee Dong-hwi, who acts as Geo-book. He’s Cha Young-bin and Lee Ho-jin’s childhood friend. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy with a bright and positive personality, but has poor luck when it comes to the ladies. Apparently, he acts as the drier and odd-job man for the group.
Lastly, there is Cho Jin-woong, who plays Kim Eun-gab, the CEO of the management company that manages Cha Young-bin. He is a powerful and well-connected agent who successfully turns Cha Young-bin from a pretty-boy actor into a rising star.
Besides the well-known main characters, the lineup of its supporting roles is interesting too. For example, there is Ahn So-hee, who gets the role as a famous actress and Cha Young-bin’s first love, who later becomes his girlfriend. There is also f(x)’s Amber, who plays Joy Jung, Kim Eun-gab’s secretary who wishes to become a manager.
Entourage‘s entire soundtrack is a mixtape, and mostly work done by famous Korean hip-hop artists such as Dok2, Beenzino, Hyukoh, and many others. There are 8 mixtapes in total, but not all of them have music videos. There are only a few of the soundtracks that have a music video: MASITNONSOUL by Hyukoh, Entourage by Seo Samuel, Neorado by Reddy, featuring Kim Bo-a of SPICA, and Young & Alive by G2.
MASITNONSOUL by Hyukoh is the opening theme of Entourage. In its music video, it shows a short summary of Entourage and the story surrounding Cha Yong-bin and his entourage. It doesn’t only show us the main character’s life as a celebrity, but also his daily life as a normal person. You can watch the music video here:
Besides the music video of MASITNONSOUL, none of the soundtracks’ music videos feature any scenes from the drama, but rather the artists of the soundtracks. Besides, all of the music videos have theirown aesthetic side, either on its visual or audio, that can satisfy both your eyes and your ears while you watch it.
