When The Camellia Blooms

The drama When The Camellia Blooms on KBS2 aired its last episode on November 21, 2019. The drama, starring Gong Hyo-jin and Kang Ha-neul, became a weekly drama (miniseries) that aired on national TV with the highest ratings throughout 2019. Quoted from Nielsen Korea, When The Camellia Blooms episode 39 and 40, that aired last night, managed to get a rating an average of 19.7 percent and 23.8 percent for each episode, nationally. As for the Seoul metropolitan area, the final episode of When The Camellia Blooms received an average rating of 24.9 percent and 20.8 percent.

Not only did it achieve the highest personal rating, because it easily surpassed the rating record of the previous episode, which was 20.7 percent, the rating of the final episode also set a new record as the highest-rated drama for a drama miniseries that aired on national TV (MBC, KBS, SBS) in 2019, as quoted by Soompi.

When the Camellia Blooms tells the life story of Dong-baek (Gong Hyo-jin) as the single parent of a boy in a new area. There, she opened a business that was unexpected by residents around. The presence and business of Dong-baek makes mothers who have done business in the region feel disturbed.

One day, Dong-baek meets with Yong-sik (Kang Ha-neul), a policeman who has the ability to ‘attract’ criminals. In only two meetings, Yong-sik openly admitted to liking Dong-baek without knowing her past. The story of the romance between them began since the first episode.

However, When the Camellia Blooms not only tells about the relationship between Dong-baek and Yong-sik. Im Sang-choon, the writer of the story, also raised the problem of the relationship of the people who lived around Dong-baek. Dong-baek doesn’t just have a relationship with Yong-sik. She was involved in a complicated problem with a bad man. Actor Kim Ji-suk also enlivened the drama When the Camellia Blooms. He plays the role of Kang Jong-ryeol, an athlete whose marriages have problems.

At the beginning of the first episode, director Cha Young-hoon did not hesitate to show the mystery and gloom of this drama. But in just a matter of minutes, the atmosphere immediately turned pleasant by showing Kang Ha-neul’s actions, which made the audience angry.

In the final episode of the series, the original Joker was finally revealed. The police themselves have arrested Park Heung-sik’s father, Park Seok-young, who has been suspected as the serial killer, Joker. However, Hwang Yong-shik finally discovered another fact, that the real Joker was not Seok-young, but Heung-sik. During this time, Seok-young was only used by Heung-sik to help him solve every murder he committed. In fact, Heung-sik also deliberately made his father get caught by the police.

However, not long after, Heung-sik was captured by Dong-baek and other Ongsan mothers, because Dong-baek also began to realize that Heung-sik was a Joker, the person who had killed her friends, Hyang-mi and Geum-ok. While Jo Jung-seok finally succeeded in undergoing kidney surgery, and he returned to health so he could go through his days with Dong-baek and Kang Pil-gu. On the other hand, the relationship between Dong-baek and Yong-shik finally improved, and the two agreed to go back on a date until finally getting married.
