The Truth About JYP Entertainment’s Acting Division Rumor

For years, JYP Entertainment’s acting division has been a home for many well-known actors and actresses in the industry, such as Choi Woo-shik, Yoon Park, and Shin Eun-soo. But, there has been a rumor about the JYP Entertainment Acting Division that’s going on for these past few months. The rumor says that JYP Entertainment would be closing down it’s acting division.

But, is the rumor true? Find out the truth and the latest news about this!


Current Actresses and Actors

Before we dive deep into the rumor, first let’s take a look at who are the actresses and actors that are currently under JYP Entertainment’s Acting Division!


Kang Hoon

Rookie actor Kang Hoon (Hangul: 강훈) was born in South Korea on the 23rd of May, 1991. He started his big-screen career by starring in the Naver Tv/YouTube Web drama titled Office Watch playing the character named Kim Kyung-joon. From that, he continued his acting career in drama series such as Let Me Introduce Her/Geunyeoro Malhal Geot Gateumyun (SBS/2018), When the Devil Calls Your Name/Akmaga Neoui Yireumeul Booreul Ddae (tvN/2019), and the recent drama Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung/Shinibsagwan Goohaeryung (MBC/2019). Before taking part in dramas, Kang Hoon also showcased his stand-out performances in short films. The titles include Kori, Picnic, and Meaning of You. He signed an exclusive contract with JYP Entertainment in December 2017.


Yoon Park

For the K-Drama watchers, Yoon Park’s face is not something we’re unfamiliar with. Born on the 18th of November, 1987, the South Korean actor has been in the industry for more than eight years. He started his career in the entertainment industry as a drummer for the band called Can’t Play Well (Korean: 못 노는 애들), which won the Bronze Prize at the 34th MBC Campus Song Festival in 2010. At first, he joined the S.M. Entertainment acting division but later moved to JYP Entertainment in 2013. He has starred in a few notable television dramas, such as the hit drama What Happens to My Family (KBS2/2014), Flower of Queen (MBC/2015), Hello, My Twenties! (JTBC/2016), Introvert Boss (tvN/2017), and Radio Romance (KBS2/2018). He also starred in a few movie roles such as Romance in Seoul (2014), The Soup (2014), and Jester: The Game Changers (2019) as well as being a guest in a few television shows such as Law of the Jungle (SBS/2017) and Battle Trip (KBS2/2017). In 2018, he won the Excellence Award, Actor in a One-Act/Special/Short Drama at the KBS Drama Awards thanks to his outstanding performance in The Tuna and the Dolphin.


Shin Eun-soo

One more familiar face! Shin Eun-soo (born October 23rd, 2002) whom you might have seen wandering in the TV as one of the SBS Inkigayo MCs is actually a South Korean actress under JYP Entertainment. She made her acting debut as the female lead in the film Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned (2016) and also landed a role in the popular television series Legend of the Blue Sea (2016) and Bad Papa (2018). At first, she joined JYP Entertainment (JYPE) in 2014 to train as both a singer and an actress. But, in 2015, she auditioned for the female leading role in the movie Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned and successfully got the role although she never acted prior to that movie. She was then given two months for preparation and acting training and was praised for her performance in a major role despite being a newcomer at such a young age. Her acting as the teenage version of Jun Ji-hyun’s character in the television series Legend of the Blue Sea was truly outstanding. Her latest movie project, Homme Fatale was aired in July 2019 where she played a supporting role named Sook-jung.


Kim Dong-hee

Kim Dong-hee (born June 13th, 1999) is perhaps most famous for playing in the hit Korean television series Sky Castle (JTBC/2019), in which he played the role of Cha Seo-joon, the twin brother of Cha Ki-joon and the son of Cha Ye-ri and Cha Min-hyuk’s family. Prior to his big role in Sky Castle, he also gathered many fans for his role in the Naver TV web series A-TEEN (2018) as well as A-TEEN 2 (2019). There, he acted with his co-actress from the same company, Shin Ye-eun. His latest project and upcoming drama where he played alongside Jung Da-bin and Park Ju-hyun, Extracurricular (Korean: 인간수업; RR: Ingansueob; lit. Human Class) is set to be released on Netflix in 2019.


Park Si Eun

Park Si-eun (born August 1st, 2001) is a South Korean actress and also the daughter of the Korean singer, Park Nam-jung. Si-eun signed a contract with JYP Entertainment on January 18th, 2017.  She made her acting debut in 2014 as one of the main characters in the children’s television series Pluto Secret Society. From that, she started taking on small roles in TV Dramas such as Signal (tvN/2016), The Good Wife (tvN/2016), Queen for Seven Days (KBS2/2017), and Criminal Minds (tvN/2017). Although still relatively early in her career, she has been nominated twice for Best Young Actress at the 2017 KBS Drama Awards (for her role in Queen for Seven Days) and the 2018 SBS Drama Awards (for her outstanding performance in Still 17)–the latter is whom she won.


Former Actresses and Actors

Before the current actresses and actors’ line-up, JYP Entertainment also became home for these talented actresses and actors which unfortunately have moved to other acting agencies. So, who are those actresses and actors? They are:


Jung Gun-joo

Jung Gun-joo (born on May 26th, 1995) also known as Jung Geon Joo, Jung Geon Ju; or Jeong Gun Joo is a former South Korean actor under JYP Entertainment. Jung Gun Joo was popular through the hit web-dramas such as Flower Ever After (2018), WHY (2018), and The Best Ending (2019). He also starred in the KBS special drama The Tuna and the Dolphin (2018) and is announced to appear in the upcoming MBC drama titled A Day Found by Chance.

After leaving JYP Entertainment, Jun Gun-joo joined Blossom Entertainment which is known for taking care of a number of big actors, including Song Joong-ki, Park Bo-gum, Cha Tae-hyun, and many others.


Park Gyu-young

Park Gyu-young (Hangul: 박규영) is a South Korean and former JYP Entertainment actress who was born on July 27th, 1993. She is known for her roles in TV Dramas such as Bring it on, Ghost/Ssawooja Gwishina (tvN/2016), Suspicious Partner/Soosanghan Pateuneo (SBS/2017), The 3rd Charm/Je3ui Maeryeok (JTBC/2018), and Romance is a Bonus Book/Romaenseuneun Byulchaekboorok (tvN/2019).


Cho Yi-hyun

Another artist who left JYP Entertainment is Cho Yi-hyun (Hangul: 조이현, born on December 8th, 1999). Cho Yi Hyun debuted through the web-drama Revenge Note. After she debuted, she actively took part in other dramas such as Bad Papa (MBC/2018), Less than Evil (MBC/2018-2019), and My Country (JTBC/2019). After leaving JYP Entertainment, she joined the Artist Company, an agency that houses well-known actors such as Go Ara, Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung, and others.


Choi Woo-shik

Another example of a successful former actor from JYP Entertainment! Choi Woo-shik (born March 26th, 1990) is a popular South Korean actor. After signing up with JYP Entertainment in October 2012, Choi Woo-shik first gained widespread recognition for his role in the film Set Me Free (2014). After that, he has built up a successful career with hit projects including films Train to Busan (2016) and Okja (2017)–both where he received international critical acclaim and success–as well as dramas such as Fool’s Love (2016) and Fight My Way (2017). He then went on to appear in the 2019 Cannes Winner film, Parasite (2019) which established his name as an award-winning actor. In 2018, Choi Woo-shik made a decision not to renew his contract with JYP Entertainment after six years under them. He later joined the Management SOOP, which houses actors including Gong Yoo, Gong Hyo-jin, Ahn Jae-wook, Seo Hyun-jin, Jeon Do-yeon, Jung Yu-mi, and Nam Ji-hyun.



Song Ha-yoon

Song Ha-yoon (born Kim Mi-sun on December 2nd, 1986) first debuted as Kim Byul (Korean김별) but changed her stage name to Song Ha-yoon in 2012. She is best known for her role in the drama Fight for My Way (KBS2/2017) as the cutie best-friend Bark Seol-hee. This beautiful actress joined JYP in 2013 and extended her contract in 2016. She made her acting debut in 2013 starring in the KBS Sang Doo! Let’s Go to School (KBS2/2003). She continued to appear in dramas such as MBC’s Nonstop 5 (2005) and Taereung National Village (2005), attracting attention with her innocent image. After six years of career under JYP Entertainment, Song Ha Yoon decided to leave the agency led by Park Jin Young. In April 2019, the actress signed a contract with King Kong from Starship, the acting division of Starship Entertainment agency. This agency is home to many talented actors and actresses, some of whom are Kim Bum, Kim Ji Won, Park Hae Soon, Song Seung Heon, Yoo Yeon Seok, Lee Kwang Soo, Lee Dong Wook Lee Mi Yeon, Im Soo Jung, Jo Yoon Hee, Chae Soo Bin, and many more.


Latest News

In July 2019, after months of rumors running around, JYP Entertainment officially announced that they will be closing their acting division and some of their actors will be moving on to a new company.

The new company they are moving to will be a start-up company that has been created by JYP Entertainment’s Vice President Pyo Jong-rok called npio Entertainment.

Hello, this is JYP Entertainment.

JYP Entertainment has decided it will be joint managing its actor division together with NPIO Entertainment starting September 1st.

Founded by JYP vice president Pyo Jong Rok, npio Entertainment is a new agency specializing in the management of actors and is also a drama and film production company.

After discussions with all of the JYP Entertainment actors, it has been decided that Yoon Park, Shin Eun Soo, Kang Hoon, Shin Ye Eun, Kim Dong Hee, and Lee Chan Sun will join npio Entertainment for the remainder of their contract periods.

All of our other actors will be ending their contracts after mutual agreement, and they are able to freely search for their new agency.

With their announcement, JYP Entertainment has revealed that their popular actors such as Jang Hee-ryung, Park Si-eun, and Ryu-won will not be staying on board with the new jointly managed label.
