Ji Sung And Hwang Jung-eum’s Chemistry in Kill Me, Heal Me
After the success portrayals as the main couple in the 2013 drama Secret Love, Ji Sung, and Hwang Jung-eum’s crazy chemistry brought them along to reunite in the 2015 drama, Kill Me Heal Me, two years after their latest project together.
Dubbed as one of the highest rating drama at that time, Kill Me, Heal Me (Korean: 킬미, 힐미; RR: Kilmi, Hilmi) aired from January 7 to March 12, 2015 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:55 on MBC. The drama’s plot revolves around the life of Cha Do-hyun (Ji Sung), a third-generation business heir who developed dissociative identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder)after experiencing several life-threatening traumatic events. As he tries to regain control over his life, a beautiful first-year psychiatric resident Oh Ri-jin (Hwang Jung-eum) appeared in his life and lends him a hand. The drama becomes more interesting as Ri-jin’s twin brother, Oh Ri-on (Park Seo-joon), who is also a writer, starts following Do Hyun around to uncover the unscrupulous lives of the rich. As the drama went on, Ri-jin has to deal with 7 different personalities of Cha Do-hyun as he tries to regain control of his life.
In this drama, Ji Sung receives praises as he successfully portrays the role of Cha Do-hyun who also embodies 7 different personalities. Cha Do-hyun (or later is revealed as Cha Joon-young) himself is actually a warmhearted and kind businessman who’s not afraid to help others. After suffering from dissociative identity disorder, he develops six other identities:
- Shin Se-gi: A young man with a devil-may-care attitude. He only appears whenever Cha Do-hyun experiences violence. Although he may be violent, he never hurts children and women. As he is the only identity to have all of Do-hyun’s memories, he’s the one who endures all of Do-hyun’s pain. Oh Ri-jin is his first love.
- Perry Park: When Cha Do-hyun reminisces the sweet side of his father, he appears as a 40-year-old man who loves fishing and building bombs as well as can speak Jeolla dialect. “Perry Park” is a reference of Perry Park Boat which Do-hyun (Joon-young) promises to make to his father, which is to buy a boat named Perry Park Boat for him.
- Ahn Yo-seob: A intelligent 17-year-artist who is suicidal. This personality was first developed when Cha Do-hyun attempted to commit suicide in high school. He has a twin sister named Yo-na.
- Ahn Yo-na : A twin sister of Ahn Yo-seob. She is an extrovert and mischievous 17-year-old girl who loves idols and only appears when Do-hyun’s triggered by a great deal of pain or mental stress. She harbors a crush on Oh Ri-on.
- Na-na (Cha Do-hyun): As the embodiment of Do-hyun’s childhood fears as well as Ri-jin’s younger self, Na-na appears as a 7-year-old girl who owns a teddy bear named Nana.
- Mr. X: A mysterious man who is actually Na-na’s father.
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung-eum also successfully portrays the role of Oh Ri-jin (later revealed to have a real name of Cha Do-hyun) a first-year psychiatry resident with a dual personality. Her real personality is actually messy and short-tempered but she tries to maintain her image as a beautiful, elegant, and gentle person. She is Do-hyun’s secret psychiatrist and slowly begins to develop romantic feelings for him.
Since in this drama, Ji Sung is supposed to have 7 different personalities, the dynamic relationship between Hwang Jung-eum and Ji Sung is different in every personality as Hwang Jung-eum tries to balances and adapts the diverse sides of Ji Sung. Thankfully, they both nail and rock the roles!

Ji Sung & Hwang Jung-eum’s Off-Screen Moments
As we have said before and repeatedly, it is undeniable that Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum’s perfect chemistry is a result of their incredible friendship!
As we can see (again) from the behind-the-scene footage, the two jokes around each other and carry the air of friendliness during their shooting.
When Ji Sung was awarded for the daesang awards at the 2015 MBC Drama Awards, Hwang Jung-eum cried for him as he received the nomination. The reason for that was perhaps because of her name being mentioned in his victory speech and the fact that both were competing for the same award category. Although she didn’t win, she still looked proud and offered support to Ji Sung.
Ji Sung indeed holds great admiration for her co-star, Hwang Jung-eum. At the Kill Me, Heal Me press conference, he even praised Hwang Jung-eum and admitted that he was glad to be reunited with her.
“I met my best friend (Hwang Jung-eum) through ‘Secret’. I wish I could do a romantic comedy together but the opportunity came very quickly. When I see Hwang Jung-eum again, even though only a year has passed, it makes me think about the relationship between two people,” the actor commented on him being re-paired with his co-star after the drama Secret Love.
Ji Sung then related his closeness to Hwang Jung-eum, from starring in two dramas in a row to shooting commercials together.
“I feel that his presence is very meaningful and a special partner for me,” he said, revealing that by working with Hwang Jung-eum several times he made it easier for him to act well.
When asked how his wife, Lee Bo-young, responds to Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum’s closeness, the actor said, “She is not jealous at all. There is absolutely no such feeling.”
It seems like the feeling of admiration is mutual as Hwang Jung-eum also revealed that she would like to be paired up with Ji Sung again in one of her interviews.
“Of course. I would love to work with him again. But maybe for another four years? Because Ji Sung is married, I really want to meet after I get married. The two drama titles that I starred with Ji Sung went very well,” answered Hwang Jung-eum as reported by Soompi.
She also thanked Ji Sung for his help on the set. “If I do not understand the script, I could not act. Whenever it was, I would ask him and he did not feel disturbed and explain it to me. We are the same age. Although Ji Sung oppa‘s face is too young than his age, “ she added with laughter.
Not long after Hwang Jung-eum commented this, she holds her own wedding with golfer Lee Young-don on February 26, 2016.
Through his short interview with Section TV in 2016, Ji Sung did not forget to give a blessing to his ex co-star’s marriage.
Ji Sung gave his blessings and prayers for Hwang Jung Eum’s wedding. He said, “She is very well suited to her future husband. I’m waiting for good news. You know what I mean by good news, right?” (what Ji Sung meant by good news was, of course, a child).
Now that Hwang Jung-eum is already married, can we get a new drama with these two again, please?
