Jo Yu-ri’s Official Debut with IZ*ONE
In October 2018, after waiting for the official debut, Off The Record Entertainment finally released a statement that the group would debut under the name IZ*ONE on October 29th, 2018, through a show-con (showcase + concert) at the Olympic Hall, Seoul. Along with the show-con, the girl group would release their first mini-album COLOR*IZ within the same day.
During the next few days, IZ*ONE had released several teasers, both for the album and the debut reality show program. The reality show program titled IZ*ONE Chu would be aired on October 25th, 2018. In the photo teaser, we could see the flowery aura of Jo Yu-ri that resembled the group’s title track, “La Vie en Rose.”
The group finally debuted on October 29th, 2018, with the title track “La Vie en Rose.” Within the first year of their debut, the group successfully won many awards and achievements, such as getting their first win on M! Countdown, winning the New Artist Award at the 2018 Seoul Music Awards and the 2018 Gaon Chart Music Awards, as well as the Rookie of the Year Award at the 2018 Asia Artist Awards.
IZ*ONE’s Jo Yu-ri’s Voting Controversy
Even before the Produce X1 and Produce 48 voting was confirmed to be rigged, the fans had already suspected that there was manipulation in the final rankings of the group. Jo Yu-ri’s name was brought up along with three other suspected names such as Choi Ye-na, Kim Chae-won, and Kim Min-ju. The reason for that is because Yu-ri’s rank had fluctuated from being 10th -> 19th -> 18th -> 19th -> 10th -> 16th -> 18th to finishing in the 3rd place. The result was so unexpected and unpredictable that the netizens became suspicious. There were mixed reactions to this accusation.
I will explain why changed the position of #PD48.
The reason is that many students participated in the SMS voting and the SMS voting's weight was high.

Those of them who don’t agree argued that text voting has more influence than online voting. With Yu-ri’s fanbase mostly consisting of teenage girls her age, the power of the votes of teenage girls is very strong as proved in Produce 101.
Still, many netizens became skeptical as in the previous episodes, Jo Yu-ri’s highest-ranking was 10th, and she was mostly outside the debut zone. It was different with Choi Ye-na who showed that there were at least three times (9, 10, 11) that she got into the debut zone. Jo Yu-ri had only been in the debut zone twice and it was a shock that she managed to climb to third place at the time of the final announcement.
Although there hasn’t been any clarification regarding the case, many netizens brought up this suspicion again after it was confirmed that IZ*ONE’s debut line-up was made by a rigged vote. After her ranking changes were posted to the forum, many netizens left comments such as, “To be honest, many people didn’t even know who Jo Yu-ri was until the last minute,” and “Wow, the rankings are weirdㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ.”
Still, there are netizens who defended her by saying, “My friend is even a muggle, but she chose Jo Yu-ri in the last episode,” and “I think many muggles voted for her, like Kim Jae-hwan in Produce S2, she’s really talented…”
IZ*ONE’s Jo Yu-ri’s Musical Skills
Outside the voting controversy, it can’t be denied that Jo Yu-ri has a dazzling musical talent and is a great addition to IZ*ONE.
As the main vocalist of the group, Jo Yu-ri has a very distinctive voice. She has a fairly boyish tone rather than a cutesy and feminine voice. It served as an attractive point and showed a unique vocal style. During her appearances in Produce 48, she was highly praised by trainer Lee Seok-hoon of the previous season for her soulful tone and powerful vocal performance. Her husky tone and sense of rhythm blend well with any song. Aside from singing, she is also good at playing musical instruments such as piano, guitar, and drums. On several occasions, she has displayed her skill in playing the piano. And not only she plays instruments, but she is also a sole lyricist and composer of the single “Someday Our Night Will Pass.”
In terms of dancing, although she is not famous for it, she has an excellent sense of beat and makes good use of the movements that fit the lyrics. Her moves are flexible and powerful at the same time. She even got praised by IZ*ONE’s main dancer, Chaeyeon, that her dance moves were pretty neat.
