Meet the Sexy Singer and Actor Highlight’s Lee Gikwang
Born as Lee Gi-kwang, this South Korean singer is best known professionally as Gikwang or Kikwang. He originally debuted as a solo singer with the stage name AJ (Ace Junior) with the EP First Episode: A New Hero before making a debut as the main dancer, visual, and lead vocalist of the South Korean boy-band BEAST. which was renamed to Highlight in February 2017.
He then returned as a solo singer with the EP titled ONE in September, 2017. He made his debut at acting in MBC’s High Kick Through the Roof, a 2009-2010 sitcom. He got an I-Magazine Fashion Face Award for Asian Male in 2016, beating out the hottest actors and artists from all over Asia to be named the face with “great proportion”.
Enlist to Military
In 2018, on the February 21 episode of MBC’s Radio Star talk show, Gikwang appeared as a guest and stated that the members of Highlight said jokingly that they all planned to enlist together because they are all around 30 years old, so what if the five members of Highlight went at the same time. Gikwang also clarified that they would not mind if they were placed in different assignments, as long as the time was the same, according to Soompi.
On November 5, 2018, their management, Around Us Entertainment, shared, “All the members are preparing to enlist one by one“. Gikwang with his fellow member Son Dongwoon were revealed to be joining the 362nd conscripted policemen recruitment. But sadly, they were both rejected.
On December 21, 2018, Gikwang was named on the list of successful candidates for the 363rd recruitment of conscripted policemen which was announced by the Gyeonggi Southern District Police Agency. The representative of Around Us Entertainment confirmed that Gikwang took the exam to be a conscripted policeman and had successfully passed the exam. He will receive basic training for five weeks at the training camp in Nonsan and will be placed as a conscripted policeman at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency for 21 months, to be exact, it will finish around January 2021.
On January 28, 2019, the representative of Around Us Entertainment revealed the date of Gikwang’s military enlistment. His impending enlistment date was confirmed on April 18, 2019. The representative of Around Us Entertainment stated, “Gikwang will enter privately without any special events on the day of enlistment,” as reported by Newsen.
With all members of Highlight preparing for military enlistment, the group Highlight released their special mini-album, Outro, on November 20, 2018, for their lovely fans, called Light, before the members’ military enlistment plans. The special mini-album contains songs that all five members of Highlight recorded before Doojoon’s enlistment, and they did not plan on carrying out broadcast promotions, but they wrapped their year-end concert Outro a little early on November 24 and 25, 2018, and performed as four members.
Previously, his fellow member, Yang Yo-seob, had already been served as a conscripted policeman at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency starting on January 24, 2019, as reported by Naver Entertainment and Soompi. It made the fact that Gikwang is the second member to be accepted as a conscripted policeman, and he is also the third member of Highlight that joined the military service.
About the other members of Highlight, the group’s leader, Yoon Doo-joon, has already served as an active-duty soldier in the 27th infantry division’s military police department at Inje county in Gangwon province, starting on August 24, 2018. Yoon Doojoon is the first member of Highlight that enlisted in the military.
The remaining members of Highlight, such as Yong Jun-hyung and Son Dong-woon, as reported, are preparing for their military service.
