Fiestar’s Debut and Career Journey

fiestar kpop group profile

Many people were surprised by the presence of a girl group under the same agency as the Korean female singer IU. Fiestar were also the immediate juniors of IU and they were also combined with a mixed group, the group had members from China, Korea, and the US united as a singer group.

Fiestar is a compound word of Spanish festival ‘Fiesta’ and ‘Star’, a name that was created to become an always exciting and energetic group. Like the group name, Fiestar’s image was four-dimensional, full of plump charm.

They released their debut single “Vista” on August 31st, 2012, and challenged the music industry. After a long period of practice from 2 to 6 years on average, Fiestar planned to unfold their skills and charm through their debut song, “Vista”.

Fiestar met a reporter from OSEN with a pretty, yet comfortable outfit that revealed her personality instead of the stereotypical colorful and standard outfit. The voices of the members who smiled brightly and shouted, “We are Fiestar,” gave a strong spirit. Fiestar attracted attention as Chinese member Cao Lu and American Korean-born Cheska belonged to them. Cao Lu, whose birthday was the day we met, got interviewed first as they talked about their recent debut as a girl group.

“Good morning. I’m Chinese member Cao Lu. I am also the eldest sister of the team. Hallyu is widespread in China. I was also a person who loved the Korean Wave, and I heard and watched a lot of dramas, movies, and songs. So, naturally, I became very interested in Korea, and as a result of my efforts, I was able to debut in Korea like this. Now it really feels like a dream. Today is my birthday, and the members congratulated me at 1 a.m. in time for Chinese time. Tears poured out in the practice room,” Cao Lu said.

In addition to Chinese member Cao Lu, Fiestar also had Cheska, an American Korean. Cheska, who was in charge of the fourth dimension in the group, tried to appeal to her own world all the time, and the members watched it lovingly.

“I am in charge of the fourth dimension in the team. I have Korean parents, but I can’t speak Korean better than Cao Lu eonnie. Still, my pronunciation is better. In this music video, I feel good because I look like a smart person,” Cheska said.

Fiestar had a range of ages from 19 years old to 26 years old. Fiestar, who were said to have more strengths because they were all different ages, said that through dialogue, they strengthen each other.

“Because the age groups are evenly distributed, we have more advantages. The eldest sister, Cao Lu, takes care of us very well with a positive mind. We all have a lot of experience because the practice period is long. There are times when there are differences of opinion, but we always talk. At that time, I think that if I release it, the regrets will shorten and the relationship will grow closer,” Linzy said.

The role model of Fiestar with only six women was a myth. Shinhwa also has 6 members, so there are many similarities. What they wanted to resemble the most in Shinhwa was their longevity.

“I want to be a long-lived group. Existing girl groups have many trivial incidents, but it seems that there are few groups that last a long time. Even though we are a girl group, we want to live a long life like a boy group. It’s been a long time to get along,” Yezi said while laughing.

Fiestar also gained a certain spotlight when they debuted because they became one of the girl groups under the same agency as the South Korean female solo artist IU, who is well-known for her popularity and good career. With this, Fiestar expressed that they felt grateful and also said that IU supported them very well.

“I’m motivated as a kid wandering trainee. I practiced for a long time to finally get along with IU. I think I have a little more compassionate heart because I’m motivated by trainees. They take care of us really well. IU supports me a lot and sometimes contacts me, and I’m doing well. She is very interested in us… Haha. She also promoted us passionately on her SNS. Thank you so much,” Hye-mi said.

Fiestar said that they want to make the group’s own color, like 2NE1 or Girls’ Generation. They also want to get the title as one of the girl groups that can later become role models for new groups that will debut in the future.

“I will work hard and be the best. Just as Shinhwa seniors are always there, Fiestar will always be with the public. I want people to hear our songs and feel happy. Throughout our activities, we want to make sure that Fiestar is recognized with our own style. We will spread our wings not only at home but abroad!” Jei stated.

On August 31st, 2012, Fiestar released their debut single, “Vista”. “Wicked” was released as a pre-release song, and the group debuted with “Vista” from the same album. Their debut promotion went along with “Sea of Moonlight” (with IU) in one album and music video also featured with IU was known to many fans. Drunken Tiger was featured in the pre-release song and Kim Jun-soo appeared in the music video for the debut song, drawing attention.

Also, pop musician Eric Bennett’s project collaboration was released, which attracted attention. Fiestar’s fellow label mate IU had also come forward to promote public relations team leader with Twitter, radio, and the internet was also a big aspect to promote the group.

Fiestar also appeared on Gag Concert. It became one of the sponsorships to them and they posted on Twitter to become an article immediately. During their debut era, Fiestar uploaded SHINee’s “Lucifer” choreography as a dance practice. They actively appealed to the ability to choreograph and sing, such as showing a video that was re-enacted by many people who watched their dance practice video.

On November 9th, 2012, the single “We Don’t Stop” was released. IU was expected to be responsible for the day to promote the teaser but it was canceled until she only posted a teaser image on Twitter. The promotion of “We Don’t Stop” started in the midst of an upset atmosphere inside the company, but ended unfortunately, leaving a response that was less than that of “Vista”.

At the same time, Jei, who was one month away from her debut at the time, appeared on an entertainment program titled The Romantic & Idol and made her face more known. Four male idols and four female idols went to Jeju Island and held a virtual meeting for several days. It also caused a calming wave by hogging it.

During the “We Don’t Stop” era, Fiestar appeared in MBC’s Weekly Idol. It was not a solo appearance, but a companion appearance with SPICA who also came to the show as a guest while they were actively promoting “I’ll Be There” at the same time.
