Yoo Byun-jae’s New History to YG Entertainment
Before joining the one of the three biggest entertainment companies in South Korea, YG Entertainment, Yoo Byung-jae used to be a B-list comedian and actor. YG Entertainment’s decision to make a contract with him was quite a surprise to everyone, because the company works with so many famous artists, such as Big Bang, 2NE1, Blackpink, Winner, iKON, and Cha Eung-won. After joining the agency, Yoo Byun-jae’s B-list TV image vanished.
Yoo Byung-jae’s joining the agency was welcomed by YG with a hilarious poster, showing him happily jumping around YG Ent’s building, wearing a shirt, shorts, and backpack! YG Entertainment’s CEO, Yang Hyun-suk, gave him a very kind welcome. One media outlet reported that before joining YG, Yoo Byung-jae used to live at monthly rent apartment. Now, YG was giving him a cozy apartment and a personal car.
Yoo Byung-jae admitted that after joining YG Entertainment, he became more wasteful than before. His father was asking for a new car and his mom was looking for a new house. He thought that after he joined the biggest company in South Korea, his family could depend on him for anything, due to his increasing monthly salary.
Now, Yoo Byung-jae has starred in some variety shows, and recently became famous because of his stand-up comedy work on Netflix. His jokes can be controversial, since he often disses his label mates from YG Entertainment, due to the numerous scandals involving drugs and the other sensitive issues.
One of the controversial jokes that he made was about the three biggest entertainment companies in South Korea, “SM’s problem is joong-guk (Chinese), JYP’s problem is mi-guk (America), and YG’s problem is yak-guk (pharmacy)”. This joke referred to the fact that SM Entertainment often has problems with their Chinese idols, while JYP used to fail for spreading wings to America with Wonder Girls, and it’s common for YG idols to have problems with drugs.
He’s received a lot of public backlash for his pointed jokes, but there’s a lot of fans who enjoy his humor, and YG doesn’t take itself too seriously.
