about Epik High

Epik High, the popular Hip-Hop Band

Epik High is a South Korean alternative hip-hop band that debuted in 2001. Epik High is known for having combined various genres and different styles of hip-hop in their music. Their unique sound and distinctive performances have always been able to draw public attention. Most of the songs of Epik High are meaningful for their fans and even their non-fans which is amazing in itself. Recently, Epik High haven’t made any stage comeback or performed in a show, which is not to say that they have completely gone off the grid. Even though all of the members of the band have already gotten married, they are still creating music and make stage comebacks. Epik High’s success story is a long one. They weren’t always as successful as they are today. Let’s find out more about the rise in the career of Epik High.

Epik High’s Debut

Epik High Debut

Epik High formed in 2001 and began their career in the underground hip-hop scene of Seoul. They performed with other Korean hip-hop bands, such as CB Mass and as part of the “Movement Crew”, one of the largest hip-hop crews, at the time, in South Korea. Epik High were unknown at the time, due to the general unpopularity of the genre among mainstream audiences and also the criticism for the ‘lyrically complex music’ which does not match with any of the K-Pop models, popular at the time. Their first performance was at Everland in 2002 with a small audience. Under Woollim Entertainment, Epik High released several albums until finally reaching success as a hip-hop band that started with their debut album from 2003, Map of the Human Soul.

Establishing the Label ‘Map the Soul’

Map The Soul Inc - Epik High

Epik High established their independent record label Map The Soul in early 2009. There were several artists under Map The Soul. Other than Epik High themselves, there were MYK, Planet Shiver and Dok2. Together, they released a special album on March 27th, 2009 titled 魂: Map the Soul, which consists of 10 songs.

They toured Japan and performed at Melon AX, Seoul with Kero One and MYK. Epik High also performed in various cities in the US along with Dumbfoundead, Kero One, MYK, and Far East Movement.

Epik High and Planet Shiver released the remix album of the previous album with the title Remixing The Human Soul, on July 22nd, 2009, including many new songs and a new title track Fly Higher.

Under Map The Soul record label, Epik High released their 6th album as the last album under the label on September 16th, 2009. With the album titled [e] released as a studio album, a South Korean tour followed that started on September 19th, 2009.

Moving to YG Entertainment

Epik High and YG

As the only foreigner member in Epik High, Tablo signed a 4-year contract with YG Entertainment to promote his group, but also as an individual due to DJ Tukutz’s and Mithra Jin’s military enlistment. After a long hiatus as a band, Epik High made a comeback on July 12th, 2012, under YG Entertainment. They released the first single under YG Entertainment “It’s Cold,” on October 9th, 2012, featuring female solo artist, Lee Hi. The single was a grat success and topped many music charts at the time.

After spending 6 years as artists under YG Entertainment, Epik High decided to part ways with YG Entertainment which brought them a lot of support from their fans, both from Korea and worldwide, mainly due to the many controversies surrounding YG Entertainment at the time. However, during an interview, they stated that the reason for their departure is the expiration of their contract and their decision to pursue music under an independent company like before to focus more on their music color.
