Korean Drama Set in the Past
LIke any other television serials, K-dramas have various genres such as romance, thriller, action and others. Currently, dramas set in the present or the future have been really popular, but even so, K-dramas set in the era from the ’70s through the ’90s are becoming more popular these days.
Consider the Reply series, Reply 94, 97, and 89 have had a huge impact and high ratings both nationally and internationally. The crime drama from OCN and tvN, Tunnel, Signal, and Girls Generation 1979 are all also set during that period. For and even older historical backdrop there are many other well-known dramas, such as Hwarang, 100 Days My Prince, Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Ruler: Master of Mask, and others.
This article, though, is going to dig up some information about a K-drama set in the ’70s, called Girls Generation 1979. Without any further ado, let’s get started!
Girl’s Friendship at Daegu During the ’70s
Girls Generation 1979 (란제리 소녀시대) was a K-drama series with 70’s background that was produce by Moon Joon Ha. It had 8 episodes and aired on KBS2 from September 11 until October 3, 2017, on Mondays and Tuesdays at 10 pm.
This drama was based on a novel with the same name, written by Kim Young Hee in 2009.
The story was set in Daegu during the 1970’s. Lee Jung Hee (played by Bona) is in the 2nd grade of high school. She was the second child of a family who owns a lingerie factory, and had a bright personality.
She was the head a group of teenage girls who had chaotic adventures together. She meets Bae Dong Moon through a group date, and Dong Moon fell in love with Jung Hee right away. However, on the other side, Jung Hee had a crush on Son Jin, who is a senior at a boys school with a cute-looking face. Jung Hee follows him around, hoping to draw his attention.
One day, Park Hye Joo, a transfer student from Seoul, joins their class and becomes the center of attention, creating jealousy and friction among Jung Hee and her friends. Despite the attention that Hye Joo gets, Son Jin become attracted to her, but Hye Joo doesn’t have any romantic feeling for Son Jin because she is more interested in Joo Young Choon, an ex-gangster who is now a local handy man.
The drama tells the story about their growing friendship, as Jung Hee and the new girl, Hye Joo, start to bond despite their initial rivalry. The story also has a dark side, with a mystery surrounding an increasing number of sexual assaults in the city, and female workers from the local toy factory are disappearing one by one.

Bona as Lee Jung Hee
She’s a 2nd grade high-school girl with a bright personality who leads a her group of friends, and is also a late bloomer that has a crush with a senior boy from the neighborhood boys’ school.
The character is played by Bona from a girl-group called WJSN, also known as Cosmic Girls, that debuted in 2016 with the songs MoMoMo and Catch Me. Her position in the group was as the main vocal.
Chae Soo Jin as Park Hye Joo
This character is a transfer student who’s come from Seoul with her father. She’s smart, mature, kindhearted, and a pretty girl who’s also Jung Hee’s neighbor and shares one class with her at school. She immediately becomes the center of attention from students at the neighborhood boys’ school.
The role is played by Chae Soo Jin, known for being Kim Ok Bin’s sister. She started her career at the age of 12 by playing on a drama called Over The Rainbow in 2006. Her role was as the younger version of her sister’s role as Jung Hae Soo.
Seo Young Joo as Bae Dong Moon
The character is a typical nerd and shy guy. He has a huge crush on Jung Hee and his heart beats faster whenever he’s around her. He’ll do anything to win Jung Hee’s heart over.
Starting his career on the age of 10, Seo Young-joo debuted in 2008 with the drama A Frozen Flower. He also starred in Solomon Perjury in 2016, along with Jang Dong Yoon, and played in School 2017.
Lee Jong Hyun as Joo Young Choon
Ju Yeong-chun is a former gangster who turns into a kindhearted and reliable man. He’s also a hard worker who has multiple jobs, working in a local pharmacy, does carpentry, is a mover and also works as a technician to have money and look after for his younger sister.
The role is played by Lee Jong Hyun, a guitarist and the vocalist of C.N.Blue. He started as an actor in 2010, with the film Acoustic, together with his co-member Kang Min Hyun. Jong Hyun is also known for playing on a drama based from the webtoon called Orange Marmalade in 2015, along with Seolhyun from AOA.
Yeo Hoe Hyun as Son Jin
Son-jin is the most popular guy in Daegu, with his handsome looks and a good academy point/ He’s called a dream guy for many girls, including Jung Hee. Son Jin is the only son of a high ranking police officer. Despite his huge popularity, he only has eyes for the transfer student, Hye Joo.
Debuting on a popular Korean drama, Pinocchio, in 2014, Yeo Hoe-hyun also appeared on the phenomenal series Reply 1988.
Dohee as Shim Ae Sook
The small, yet terrible, bully in the school, Sim Ae Suk might be seen as a tough and rebellious person, but she actually has a soft personality. She has a family problem going on in the drama.
The role is played by Min Dohee, who was originally a member of Tiny-G. The group was disbanded back in 2015, and from there she started to focus more on an acting career. Debuting in Reply 1994, she was known for slaying the “tough girl” roles.
