Cinderella’s Sister: Review
Cinderella’s Sister, or Cinderella’s Stepsister, is a Korean Drama that was released on March 31st, 2010, and was being aired until June 3rd, 2010, on KBS2. This drama is produced by Moon Joon-ha, directed by Kim Young-jo and Kim Won-suk, and written by Kim Kyu-wan. There is a total of 20 episodes to be watched of this drama.
For you who haven’t watched this drama yet and thought it would be about Cinderella’s point of view about her miserable relationship with her stepsister, you couldn’t be more wrong. No, no. You guys are so wrong. This drama actually shows the stepsister’s heartbreaking story.
The story first introduces you to Song/Goo Eun-jo (played by our beautiful Moon Geun-young) in her late teens. From her childhood, she has learned to trust no one and live on her own, be strong for her own. She has a manipulative, money-grabbing mother, Song Kang-sook (played by Lee Mi-sook) and is living with Mr. Jang, her mother’s abusive boyfriend. Arguments and fights are always present in the house.
Not only that, but Eun-jo is also living with Mr. Jang’s ex-girlfriend’s son, a boy named Han Jung-woo, who has a dream of becoming a successful basketball player. Eun-jo cooks and cleans for the young boy every single day. What Eun-jo hasn’t yet realized is that Jung-woo is actually in love with her.
Then, the “miracle” happens. When Eun-jo tries to escape with Kang-sook from Mr. Jang, with his precious stuff, she accidentally meets Goo Hyo-seon, who’s with her class on a school trip and she passes the stuff to her. This fateful meeting will bring Eun-jo to meeting her future stepdad and stepsister in a weird way.
Her mother, Kang-sook is trying to seduce Goo Dae-song (played by Kim Kap-soo) when her principal reason for finding Goo Hye-seon is to simply retrieve the stuff. But when she finds out they’re rich, and the girl’s father is widowed, she uses her manipulative brain and manages to convince Dae-song for the two of them to get married.
And from then on, Eun-jo’s life is not the same as she used to live before.
At first, Eun-jo really doesn’t want it and tries to run away. But when Hong Ki-hoon (played by Chun Jung-myung) catches her, he doesn’t take her forcefully, but he convinces Eun-jo to stay until she’s at least twenty years old. Then, as the story flows, they fall in love with each other.
The story of her life really changes making Eun-jo learn to love and care with love, as she had been a really good girl from the start but she didn’t know what affections are about and what it means to give and receive affection. Her life has now become warmer and also complicated, as her love for Hong Ki-hoon makes her miserable at the same time, since her stepsister, Goo Hye-seon, has already loved Hong Ki-hoon for a long time.
This romantic melodrama will present you with a picture of what “family” really means, with the complicated relationship between not blood-related sisters, and how the feelings of love can bring about various destructive affections into effect, such as revenge for an unfortunate and miserable past life. This drama will make you use up a lot of tissues just to wipe out your tears, again and again.
Although there are some scenes in the drama which you might find boring or unnecessarily long, making you think they are only there to fill up the time, or scenes you might find hard to understand and connect with the story, the drama will still amaze you with its meaningful storyline and the outstanding acting skills of the actors and actresses involved. And, lastly, some viewers have found the end of this K-Drama not quite satisfying and plain, considering the intense and tear-jerking plot development throughout the episodes.
But still, it is still worth watching!
