Members Who Debuted Without Joining Wanna One
Now, you might have been wondering about what has happened to the trainees who didn’t make it to the final round.
Don’t worry, despite getting eliminated and not being included in the final line-up of Wanna One, there are quite a few trainees who eventually managed to debut!
Here are some of them:
Do you still remember those faces in the picture? Yep, that’s right, they are all Broduce 101 trainees who didn’t get picked in the final line-up!
The group debuted under the name JBJ (Korean: 제이비제이) and consists of six members who previously participated in Produce 101 Season 2 which are: Kenta Takada of Star Road Entertainment, Jin Longguo of Choon Entertainment, Kim Sanggyun of Hunus Entertainment, Roh Taehyun of Ardor & Able (later known as Star Crew Entertainment), Kim Dong-han of OUI Entertainment, and Kwon Hyunbin of YGKPlus. The group was managed by Fave Entertainment, while CJ E&M oversaw the group’s release production.
Here’s the little backstory of the forming of the group. On the same day as the final episode of Produce 101 season 2, the show’s fans had expressed their desire to form a project group equivalent to Produce 101 named I.B.I which consisted of eliminated trainees whom they would like to see debuting together. The fans tentatively named the group JBJ, which stands for the Korean phrase 정말 바람직한 조합, meaning “A Really Desirable Combination,” and “Just Be Joyful.”
Discussions to officially form and debut JBJ then began around early July 2017 between the seven tentative members (originally included Kim Taedong who later couldn’t participate due to an ongoing conflict with his agency, The Vibe Label) and their respective agencies. CJ E&M and LOEN Entertainment also participated in the discussions as the intended management companies of the group’s releases and activities, respectively. Fave Entertainment, LOEN Entertainment’s in-house label, was tasked to be the group’s official agency. On July 25th, the trainees and the companies had reached an agreement. It was reported that the group’s contract would last seven months, but LOEN Entertainment expressed that they are open for any discussions to extend the group’s contract.
Long story short, the group officially debuted on October 18th, 2017, with 6 official members. Sadly, the group didn’t last very long. Originally, JBJ was set to disband in April 2018. However, as all six members expressed interest in extending their contracts, there had been discussions over a possible extension of their contracts. But, Fave Entertainment confirmed that JBJ’s seven-month promotions would be concluded with the expiration of the management contract in April, as the companies decided not to extend the contracts.
JBJ held its final concert on April 22nd, 2018, and disbanded on April 30th, 2018.
This musical duo includes Im Young-min and Kim Dong-hyun from Brand New Music, who impressed viewers with their dance and rap skills on Produce 101 Season 2.
MXM officially debuted on September 6th, 2017, with the release of their EP titled Unmix. The EP contains seven tracks, including “Good Day” and “I Just Do.” In 2018, MXM released its second EP titled Match Up with a total of six tracks including the lead single “Diamond Girl.” Later, MXM released their first full-length album titled More Than Ever on August 14th, 2018, with the lead single “Ya Ya Ya.” Following the release of the album, MXM held its first concert titled More Than Ever on September 29-30 2019, at Olympic Hall.
In 2019, Im Young-min and Kim Dong-hyun joined Brand New Music’s new boy group AB6IX which also consists of ex-Wanna One members Lee Dae-hwi and Park Woo-jin.
Samuel Kim was one of the Produce 101 season 2 trainees who debuted as a solo singer. In the final episode of the show, he was ranked 18th and was not able to join the show’s project group. One month after the show ended, he began his solo career as Samuel, with the release of his first EP Sixteen on August 2nd, 2017.
His solo career proved to be successful after he sold out the first copies of his mini-album. He also won a few music awards such as the Global Collaboration Award at the 26th Seoul Music Awards, the Most Searched KR New Singer at the Yahoo! Asia Buzz Awards, and the New Hallyu Performance Award at the Soribada Best K-Music Awards.
Jeong Sewoon is another solo singer on the list.
He placed No. 12 on Produce 101 Season 2, just barely missing the cut into Wanna One. He first garnered attention after appearing on SBS’ K-Pop Star season 3 and finishing in the top 10. After training under Starship Entertainment for four years, he officially debuted on August 31st, 2017, with his first EP titled Ever which peaked at number two on the Gaon Chart after selling 23,438 copies within its first week. The album has two versions: “+Glow” and “+Green.” Both versions contain six songs, including his original compositions “Miracle” and “Never Mind” (Korean: 오해는 마), as well as the title track. The title track, “Just U” peaked at number eight and was digitally downloaded more than 59,790 times within the first week of sales.
As a result of his debut successes, he won the Rising Star Award at the 2nd Asia Artist Awards in 2017.
