Who’s the most popular South Korean Girl Group at this moment? According to South Korean Girl Groups Brand Reputation Ranking, Twice will always have a spot in top 10 every week. But, talking about Korean Girl Groups will never be complete without SNSD (also known as Girls’ Generation or Sonyeo Sidae). Both groups are extremely popular right now. SNSD is the 2nd generation of idol, while Twice is in the 3rd generation. They are often compared to each other since their initial members are 9 girls. Let’s get to know better these two groups!
SNSD formed by S.M. Entertainment. The group is composed of eight members – Taeyon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun. It’s originally nine with Jessica, until she departed from the group in September 2014. They debuted in 2007 but their popularity emerged after the release of their singles Tell Me Your Wish (Genie), Oh! and Run Devil Run in early 2009. The Guinness World Records recognized Girls’ Generation in its’ 2018 edition as the artist that earned most awards.
SNSD have enormous number of fans throughout 10 years of their career in the K-POP industry. SNSD fandom name is S♥NE (So-One) with Pastel Rose Pink as their official fan color.
Twice was formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2015 reality show Sixteen. The group has nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. They debuted on October 20th, 2015, with the album “The Story Begins”. 2016 with their single Cheer Up, the song charted at number 1 on the Gaon’s Digital Chart and became the best-performing single of the year.
Twice’s fandom is also powerful looking at the fact that they win many awards in a weekly music show. Twice’s fandom is called Once with the official color Apricot and Neon Magenta.
Comparison between Twice and SNSD
Many people believe that there will never be a girl group as successful as SNSD. 10 years of stable careers and popularity are surely not easy for anybody. Today people need to admit that Twice got much popularity from the public. Comparing these two groups became undeniable. But it’s never to undermine either SNSD or Twice.
Since each group originally has nine members, people are often comparing which member from TWICE resembles a member of SNSD. Regardless, each members of both groups still have their own unique charm.

The Leader (Taeyon vs. Jihyo)
Taeyon is SNSD’s leader, while Jihyo is the leader of Twice. Both of them are the vocal line of the group.
Kim Taeyon (known as Taeyon) born March 9th, 1989 in Jeonju, South Korea. Taeyeon graduated from Jeonju Art High School and was awarded the school’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Being a leader of a biggest girl group at time is surely not an easy task. In an interview, Taeyon said that she almost give up the title. At some point Taeyon have talked to her members that SNSD will no longer have a leader. The rest of the girls all agreed and said that’s fine and cool. They already assumed as if the group were acting without an official leader anyways.
Park Jihyo (known as Jihyo) has also became a leader as well as main vocalist for Twice. She was born in Gyonggi-do, South Korea, February 1st, 1997. She became part of JYP and was a trainee for ten years. Jihyo stated that the hardest thing of a leader is mantaining communication with all members.
The Maknae (Seohyun vs. Tzuyu)
Being the maknaes or the youngest in the group like Seohyun and Tzuyu gets them a lot of love from their groups. Both Seohyun and Tzuyu always seems to radiate the princess-like charm with their calm demeanor.
Seo Joohyun (stage name: Seohyun) born June 28th, 1991 in Seoul, South Korea. She graduated theater acting from Dongguk University in August 2014. She has established herself as an actress in both drama and musical plays apart from her group activities. After more than 10 years being called “the youngest”, Seohyun said that she wanted people to stop calling her that.
Chou Tzu-yu born June 14th, 1999 is a Twice member from Taiwan. She was discovered by talent scouts at the MUSE Performing Arts Workshop in Tainan. Different from Seohyun, Tzuyu said that she got a lot of benefits being the maknae in the group. She said that other Twice’s members seems trying to look after her and treat her better because she is the youngest, and from abroad.
The Visual (Yoona vs. Sana)
Im Yoon Ah (known as Yoona) and Minatozaki Sana (known as Sana) often called the visuals of the groups. It`s no wonder because of their Goddess-like faces and a good proportions. Both Yoona and Sana also possess natural beauty.
Yoona was born on May 30th, 1990 in Seoul, South Korea. She has been called a “CF Queen” due to her several television commercial films. Being the visual of the group means that she often become the center of SNSD. This role has been embedded to her since SNSD’s debut, back in 2007.
Sana was born on December 29th, 1996 in Osaka, Japan. Sana is known for her cute appearance. This trait made her be trusted to execute most of the crucial parts in Twice’s songs such as “shy, shy, shy” part in Cheer Up. Her original ‘kawaii‘ behavior made the phrase very popular among Twice’s fans.
The Dancer (Hyoyeon vs. Momo)
Dance is an important element for girl groups in K-Pop industry. That’s why members with outstanding dancing skills are always important to the group. Hyoyeon and Momo possessed magnificent dance skills long before their debut with their respective groups. Bothth of them can dance various dance styles, and they were able to meet in the dance program called “Hit the Stage”.
Kim Hyoyeon was born in Incheon, South Korea on September 22nd, 1989. She started to dance in elementary school. She learned hip hop, jazz and Latin dance. She is well known for her brilliant dance ability, earning her the nickname, Dancing Queen. In an interview she said that she learned dancing all her life, but was not always able to show her powerful moves because SNSD’s songs concept are often cute.
Momo Hirai (known as Momo), was born on November 9th, 1996 Kyoto, Japan. She started dancing at a very young age and wanted to become a singer because of Amuro Namie. She later decided to got into K-pop after watching the Rain performance. She was the only eliminated member of SIXTEEN to be brought back to debut as a member of Twice because of her dancing abilities.
The Owner of Best Smile (Sunny vs. Dahyun)
Sunny and Dahyun are surely aware that they have the best smiling faces. They are almost always caught up smiling in every photo. Both Sunny and Dahyun have pair of round bright eyes that look absolutely glowing when they smile. Not to left the contagious wrinkly eyes when they smile. Their smile is always brighter the moods.
Lee Soon-kyu (known as Sunny) born on May 15th, 1989) born in California, United States. Her father, Lee Soo-young, was also known to be the elder brother of SM Entertainment’s founder Lee Soo-man. Her natural eye smiles make her able to do aegyo the best among SNSD’s members.
Kim Dahyun was born in Gyonggi-do, South Korea in May 28th, 1998. She was the most popular during JYP survival show before Twice debut called “Sixteen”. She always looks cheerful, thanks to her beautiful smile that never leaves her face.
Charismatic Member (Sooyoung vs. Jeongyeon)
SNSD’s Sooyoung and Twice’s Jeongyeon also have the same aura that represent’s the femme fatale charms. Both are energetic and have that mysterious aura. But, despite that quality, Sooyoung And Jongyeon often bring laughter to the group with their sharp comments and witty personality.
Choi Soo-young was born on February 10th, 1990 in Gyonggi, South Korea. She actually had debuted before SNSD in a short-lived Korean-Japanese singing duo, Route θ, during 2002 in Japan. Sooyoung is always popular for her witty comments on variety shows. It makes her appearance always refreshing.
Yoo Jeong-yeon was born as Yoo Kyung-wan on November 1st, 1996 in Suwon, South Korea. She changed her name legally in third grade because her name was too masculine. But even until now, Jeongyeon is pictured as a tomboy, but still considered the real girl crush.
