It’s cute and it’s TWICE! TWICE have been known for their cute concepts. But behind that cheerfulness, the song also gives strength to their listeners, especially ONCE members, TWICE‘s fandom. After their debut in 2015, they soon entered the entertainment industry in Japan with “One More Time” in 2017. A year later, three years after TWICE’s debut, they also released the Japanese single “Candy Pop”.

“Candy Pop” is the second Japanese single by TWICE. This song was pre-released on January 12th, 2018, as a Digital Single. The CD single was then released on February 7th, 2018, and it contains three tracks. The announcement of the song release was made public on December 22nd, 2018, with the teaser photos.

Story of “Candy Pop”

The sneak peek of “Candy Pop” was released with their B-side track “Brand New Girl”. While “Candy Pop” was released on January 12th, 2021, “Brand New Girl” was released on January 23rd, 2018, via Line Music. The song “Candy Pop” is composed by Woo Min Lee and Mayu Wakisaka who also collaborated in producing “Knock Knock”. While mixing engineer for “Candy Pop” is Tony Maserati, and Ted Jensen plays the role of mastering engineer.

The lyrics of the song are about the happiness about the existence of someone else so it feels that the person’s existence feels like candy with many flavors. This special existence also makes their lonely days long gone whenever they hear that person talk. Many have said that this song is about TWICE’s relationship with ONCE while they rely on each other.

MV of “Candy Pop”

The MV of “Candy Pop” is quite interesting. In this MV, TWICE act as animated idols who can only be seen on television. Beside TWICE, the main hero of this MV is a girl who watches TWICE as animated idols. The girl is looking at the calendar and she looks sad, while TWICE are facing some difficulties as they are nagged for their performance.

They then change into humans thus symbolically representing the fact that they are human and not the ideal version that people thought they were as they came in the animated version. However, eventually, human TWICE members are being chased by policewomen who are trying to bring them down. TWICE then are saved by a car that is driven by JYP and they see the sad girl who watches them and then they visit the human world giving Candy to the girl as they are happily together.

 

The animated music video of “Candy Pop” is directed by Takahiko Kyogoku and in collaboration with Naïve Creative Production, while the storyline is written by Park Jin Young. It should also be noted that there’s a hidden character that is illustrated by Chaeyoung. The music video of “Candy Pop” ranked 6th on the 2018 YouTube Top Trend Music Videos in Japan.

“Candy Pop” Performance

Regarding the performance of “Candy Pop”, TWICE performed “Candy Pop” for the first time on their TWICE Showcase Live Tour 2018 that began on January 19th, 2018, in Seto, Aichi. Other than the Showcase, TWICE also performed “Candy Pop” on Music Station on February 2nd, 2018.

 

“Candy Pop” Achievements

As one of the best-selling girl groups in South Korea, TWICE have also received a warm welcome from Japanese listeners. The CD Single that contains two songs sold 117,486 units on its release day. On the Oricon Chart, the single sold 265,758 copies making it the highest number of copies sold of a Korean girl group that has debuted in Japan.
