Busters’ Chaeyeon’s Appearance in EBS’s Tok! Tok! Boni Hani!
Children’s program Tok! Tok! Boni Hani!, which is broadcast on EBS, is now attracting controversy after spreading a video in which Busters’ Chaeyeon was caught on camera being the victim of violence and verbal abuse by two comedians.
On December 11th, 2019, the video featured Chaeyeon (who was 15 years old at the time) at the studio of Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! who seemed to be holding the arm of comedian Choi Young-soo who was about to leave. But the comedian immediately turned around with a face full of anger.
Choi Young-soo’s beating action seemed to be covered by the Tok! Tok! Boni Hani!, who walked out of the studio. But after that, Chaeyeon was clearly in pain holding her arm while Choi Young-soo walked away.
Regarding this video, EBS denied that there had been violence between the members of Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! and said that the moment of beating was just a joke. Chaeyeon’s representatives are also said to have dismissed the incident as a joke, not violence.
However, this controversy has not subsided as another comedian named Park Dong-geun was heard calling Chaeyeon ‘Sterile Listerine Bitch’ and when the beautiful idol did not hear, the comedian shortened the above name to a shorter one, ‘Poisonous Bitch’.
The phrase Listerine itself is often described as something commonly used in adult entertainment venues, referring to sex workers who use mouthwash to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
EBS once again denied that comedian Park Dong-geun’s remarks constituted sexual harassment. “There is always Listerine in the waiting room and Chaeyeon will always rinse her mouth with Listerine before the show starts,” said an EBS representative.
“During the live broadcast, he joked with Chaeyeon and said it was to tease her, but both the producer and Park Dong-geun himself did not know that it was the wrong expression,” added the EBS representative.
Meanwhile, EBS also apologized for using the term without knowing its true meaning (referring to sex workers). EBS said both the producer and Park Dong-geun were surprised that this was a problem.
EBS immediately apologized for this problem and announced that it had kicked the two comedians in question, namely Choi Young-soo and Park Dong-geun from the children’s program.
Busters‘ agency also spoke about the video allegedly showing the violent act. But they uncovered the fact that Chaeyeon was not actually beaten by Choi Young-soo.
“Hello, this is Marbling. It’s related to the Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! live video that was the problem. After checking with Chaeyeon, she confirmed that ‘It was just a joke. There was a misunderstanding because the whole situation wasn’t shown.’”
“He was very surprised by the situation,” as stated in the official statement of the Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! side, Chaeyeon has been taking part in the program for a long time and the incident happened because she was close to the members. The joke crossed the line.
However, the agency acknowledged the gravity of the actions (threatening behavior, etc.) and received a promise from the program that this would never happen again. We would like to apologize to fans. The agency will always pay attention and work hard to protect our artists.
In addition to the Busters agency, comedian Choi Young-soo also opened his voice to reveal his innocence. “I didn’t hit Chaeyeon. She is like a niece and sister to me. Why would I be violent toward her? It doesn’t make sense. This is driving me crazy,” Choi Young-soo said to local media.
EBS’ Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! reaped a controversy that made the public very angry. This is because a video circulating showing Busters’ Chaeyeon who was still 15 years old was thought to be a victim of violence and verbal sexual harassment by adult comedians.
After the video went viral, EBS immediately apologized. They also announced that they had kicked out the two comedians in question, namely Choi Young-soo and Park Dong-geun.
However, Chaeyeon’s agency stated that, in fact, Chaeyeon was not beaten by Choi Young-soo. Similar to Chaeyeon’s agency statement, Choi Young-soo also defended himself by explaining that he was innocent. So he felt hurt when he was fired by EBS, even though they had been working together for a dozen years.
Because this case went viral, netizens tried to dig deeper into the Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! incident, which is a special program for children. Netizens discovered that previously there were several other bad things that Park Dong-geun did to Chaeyeon. So that the recent inappropriate case is not the first time Chaeyeon was being harassed.
There was an incident where Park Dong-geun suddenly got up from his seat and grabbed Chaeyeon’s neck. Another incident showed the moment when Park Dong-geun squeezed a bottle filled with water until it sprayed into Chaeyeon’s face and eyes. Because of this, Chaeyeon staggered, she was shocked and in pain.
Seeing these pictures, not a few Korean netizens felt angry. Netizens think that things like that are not appropriate for children, especially when they are broadcast on special children’s programs.
“They really are bastards hahaha.”
“Eliminating them from the industry is the only solution. Adults don’t deserve to act like that, let alone a 15 year old…”
“Pengsu worked so hard to build the image of EBS only to be ruined by them.”
“The PD who saw all this and still said no, should be fired too.”
“There is also a clip of Park Dong-geun rubbing kimbap on Hani’s lips, it literally makes me swear just looking at it. No PD thought about stopping her. They should be fired and replaced too.”
“How can all the staff, PDs and scriptwriters just watch all this? Why aren’t they fired too?”
“These clips are crazy. They make you feel dirty just watching them. They’re more aggressive than any public broadcast I’ve ever seen.”
“This should be an educational event right? Hahaha.”
“If he’s 38, he’s old enough to be the father of a 15 year old… I feel bad for her, she shouldn’t have started her career with such disgusting people.”
To sum it up, some time ago, Busters’ Chaeyeon was reportedly a victim of violence and harassment by two comedians on Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! The EBS TV station also announced that they had immediately kicked out the two comedians. Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! itself had stopped broadcasting for some time. But now, local media reported that Chaeyeon decided to stay as a member of the children’s program.
“We guarantee that Chaeyeon will return when the program starts airing again. We decided on a temporary hiatus to rearrange the program to protect the health of our underage member, Chaeyeon,” said an EBS source.
“The new production staff is currently preparing for the return of the program. We are doing this not to cover up what happened but to better protect our members,” continued the EBS source.
“On the day of the incident, we removed Choi Young-soo and Park Dong-geun from the program and separated them from Chaeyeon. At the request of Chaeyeon and her family, we promise to support her in the protective counseling program,” concluded the EBS source.
Chaeyeon is confirmed to return to Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! and this was also positively welcomed by South Korean netizens. But of course, many expect a change from the production team.
“Yes, she is kind and beautiful. She didn’t do anything wrong so hang on, Chaeyeon is excited,” wrote a netizen. “Good choice. It doesn’t make sense if they fire the victim,” continued another.
“Please also change the environmental conditions there. Having minors in the midst of adults shouldn’t be a problem,” added another netizen. “I’m relieved. I hope she’s not hurt by this problem,” concluded another netizen.
EBS’ Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! regarding cases of verbal violence and sexual harassment experienced by Busters’ Chaeyeon has not subsided. The public’s anger became even more intense when they found out that Chaeyeon had not only once or twice received indecent treatment from the comedians performing in the show.
In addition to blaspheming Choi Young-soo and Park Dong-geun, not a few netizens criticized the PD and writer of this show. The reason is that netizens think that they are just watching Chaeyeon being treated badly and just broadcasting it on TV just like that.
Aware of netizens’ blasphemy, EBS decided to temporarily stop the production of this program. “Starting today, Tok! Tok! Boni Hani! will stop (airing). We have an animation that will replace this week’s show slot, and we are discussing future scheduling plans,” explained a source from EBS.
On the same day, EBS CEO Kim Myung-joong held an emergency meeting with top officials of the broadcasting station. They discussed how incidents like this can occur, future prevention plans, and what disciplinary actions should be taken.
Not only that, the general manager and head of the EBS children’s department in charge of the show’s production will also be removed from their positions, and the entire crew will be replaced.
The CEO also instructed officials to forward program-related matters to the disciplinary committee and came up with a foolproof method to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. An emergency team for system inspection and establishment of comprehensive measures will be formed and led by the vice president of EBS.
“The recent incident is something that absolutely must not happen to beat the name of EBS. We will carefully examine the entire production system to resolve the issue and prevent it from reoccurring. We sincerely apologize to the cast members who were hurt by this incident,” said CEO Kim Myung-joong.
