BTOB’s Ilhoon’s Drug Scandal Fears About Other K-Pop Idols
On December 21, 2020, it was reported that Jung Ilhoon was being investigated for his habit of buying and using illegal drugs. Ilhoon’s drug scandal apparently sparked concern among netizens.
According to the police, Jung Ilhoon was forwarded to the prosecutor’s office on charges of buying marijuana or medicinal marijuana several times over the past 4-5 years back in July. Along with Ilhoon, several other individuals who were accomplices in purchasing illegal drugs using virtual money have also been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.
Now, many netizens are worried that such a pattern will lead to the disclosure of more K-pop idols being involved in the trafficking and use of illegal drugs. Some even suspect that Ilhoon will also submit the names of other known accomplices, sellers, or buyers in the process of his own investigation.
CUBE Entertainment Stated That BTOB’s Ilhoon Will Leave the Group
Unpleasant news came from one of the Korean boy groups, BTOB. Cube Entertainment as the agency that houses the group announced that one of its members, Ilhoon, will leave the group. This follows the marijuana use scandal that befell Ilhoon.
Following this, Cube Entertainment on December 31, 2020, announced that Ilhoon will no longer be a part of BTOB. In their official statement released to the media, Cube Entertainment shared that Ilhoon also did not want to damage the group’s image again and decided to leave the group.

“Hello. This is Cube Entertainment. First, we would like to bow our heads to apologize for causing concern with the matter involving our label artist Jung Ilhoon.
Jung Ilhoon is currently feeling the heavy burden of his actions which undermined the trust of his fans and caused significant disappointment. The agency also acknowledged the severity of the problem at hand, and after serious discussion, we decided to respect the wishes of the individual who has chosen to leave the group so as not to cause further harm.
Once again, the agency is aware of the heavy burden of the current situation. We promise to do our best so that Ilhoon can diligently participate in the ongoing investigation.
From now on, BTOB will continue to promote as 6 members. We will also give our best efforts and help so that BTOB can continue to show a mature image on stage. Once again, we sincerely apologize to the fans who love and support BTOB.”
BTOB’s Ilhoon Undergoes His First Trial Regarding Marijuana Use
The first trial for former BTOB member Ilhoon took place on April 22, 2021, at the Seoul Central District Court. The 1994-born singer was indicted on suspicion of drug use.
During the trial, Ilhoon’s legal representative stated that the idol who started his career in 2012 admitted to all the accusations leveled against him. “The defendant admitted to all charges and reflected on his guilt,” said Ilhoon’s legal representative.
When Ilhoon was given the opportunity to speak, he said, “I sincerely repent. I am very sorry.” The other seven defendants who were indicted along with Ilhoon also admitted to the charges.
Ilhoon and the other defendants were brought before the court on suspicion of buying and smoking 826 grams (about 1.8 pounds) of marijuana together. The prohibited items were worth approximately 130 million won in 161 cases between July 5, 2016, and January 9, 2019.
Ilhoon enlisted in the military in May 2021, a month before he was forwarded to prosecutors on the charges. He is currently serving as a public service worker. In December 2020, Cube Entertainment announced Ilhoon’s retirement from BTOB.
Results From BTOB’s Ilhoon’s First Trial
On May 20, 2021, the final hearing for the indictment of former BTOB member Ilhoon for the purchase and use of marijuana was held at the Seoul Central District Court. The rapper was previously arrested on suspicion of buying and consuming marijuana.
The prosecution demanded a prison sentence and a fine against Ilhoon, stating “We demand four years in prison and a 133 million won fine for the defendant Jung Ilhoon.”
In his final testimony, Ilhoon stated, “I apologize for disappointing many people who believed in me. I have been reflecting on my life until now while going through this incident. Although it cannot be undone, I will cherish and remember the pain and realization that I gained through this incident and live without shame.”
Ilhoon’s lawyer said, “The defendant deeply regrets it. He was very stressed while promoting in the entertainment industry as a songwriter and trainee from a young age, and he tried to relieve stress in the wrong way.”
Ilhoon withdrew from BTOB in December 2020 and is currently completing his mandatory military service as a public service worker. The court will decide and announce Ilhoon’s sentence on June 10.
2 Years in Prison for Marijuana Use

Seoul Central District Court senior judge Yang Cheol-han presided over Jung Ilhoon’s first sentence on June 10, 2021, and sentenced Jung Ilhoon to two years in prison for habitual marijuana use. Prosecutors had previously demanded four years in prison for his crimes.
Yang Cheol-han also considered it necessary to arrest Jung Ilhoon in court because he believed there was a possibility of Jung Ilhoon escaping. Jung Ilhoon has been accused of using marijuana 161 times over the past few years and allegedly cooperating with seven other people to purchase marijuana worth 133 million won over a 30-month span between July 2016 and January 2019.
BTOB’s Ilhoon Files an Appeal After Getting Sentenced
Previously, Jung Ilhoon was sentenced for marijuana use from 2016 to 2019. Ilhoon was given a prison sentence of 2 years and a fine of 133 million won.
On June 14, 2021, Ilhoon reportedly appealed his two-year prison sentence after being found guilty of consuming marijuana. According to a representative, the former BTOB member did not agree with the judge’s decision. Thus, he appealed to the Seoul Central District Court of South Korea.
Meanwhile, Ilhoon decided to leave his group BTOB in December 2020 because of the marijuana scandal. Currently, Ilhoon is undergoing military service as a public service worker since May 28, 2020.
