Brown Eyed Soul’s Ahn Jungyup’s Career Journey
Afterward, the first solo concert was held in 2004. At the time, Brown Eyed Soul’s 1st album sold 400,000 copies, showing a fairly high sales volume among the music albums that began to shift to the music market, compared to the 700,000 copies of Brown Eyes Vol.3 released at the end of 2002, the previous year. In 2005, the second album The Wind, The Sea, The Rain was released.
Due to the characteristics of the music industry at the time when the digital music market was rapidly reorganized, the sales volume of albums decreased beyond comparison with the previous work, and the album itself was not commercially successful compared to the first album, but the title song, “My Story”, released in 2007 managed to achieve success.
It is said that he was able to debut as a member of Brown Eyed Soul thanks to the demo tape that he produced while working in the military as an entertainer of the Navy Public Relations Corps, while making his debut as a solo singer. Originally, he was going to debut as a solo artist, but accepting Naul’s proposal to form a team together, he made his debut as part of Brown Eyed Soul.
In the case of Brown Eyed Soul activities, he did not receive much attention, but the live video of “Nothing Better”, which he sang at the 2007 concert, became popular on the Internet and gained popularity and recognition. The so-called ‘millstone singing method,’ a singing method of singing a song while spinning the microphone at the corner of the mouth and his distinctive falsehood are his trademarks.
Ahn Jungyup also became an MBC Radio Blue Night DJ in 2010, and has a long half-time of about three years conducting a radio show with Sung Si-kyung on MBC and he even sang MBC’s 50th Anniversary Logo Song. He also became the MC of SBS Power FM’s Power Stage Live program from 2015–2016, then got his own radio program, the SBS Power FM Jungyup’s Music High Featured TV Program.
I Am a Singer (Hangul: 나는 가수 다) is a South Korean singing competition program that was aired on MBC. Ahn Jungyup made his first appearance in the show in 2011 with a relatively short career compared to senior singers looking at 20 years of debut such as Kim Gun-mo, Lee So-ra, and YB. Ahn Jungyup was treated as the youngest. Actually, Kim Bum-soo is younger, however, since Kim Bum-soo debuted earlier, as a singer, he was a senior to Ahn Jungyup.
In his first preference survey performance, he sang his representative song “Nothing Better”, but unfortunately, it ranked 7th. I Am a Singer is a program that has a lot of appraisals from middle-aged and older people.
Jungyup received favorable reviews, such as taking first place in the middle evaluation for his unique singing and sophisticated sound R&B arrangement. Although he was eliminated from the show, he succeeded in imprinting the millstone singing method and unique falsehood onto viewers.
At the opening show of I Am a Singer Season 2 he sang his new song “I Didn’t Know Better” that was released in 2011. The song itself is a true song, and the vocal voice is low, and the distinctive tone of the short vocal part is not well used. The discrimination is that the remaining 11 singers sang all of them, but they sang them quietly. However, it was pointed out that there was also an acoustic problem.
In the B team preliminary round, he came out with Cho Deok-bae’s song titled “In Dream”. With the arrangement of the easy listening series, where Jungyup’s unique color is well buried, it made the listeners puzzled, but the soft tone and the limit of the range were not met, and in the end, it was the lower volume. He prepared for the farewell singer exhibition. However, the evaluation after the broadcast was friendly and there were many who thought that it was regrettable that he was not in the top ranks.
After a long absence from the music industry, Brown Eyed Soul returned with the release of a single titled “I’ll Make Way” (Hangul: 비켜 줄께)). On May 12th, the second double single, “Love Ballad” and “Never Forget” were released. The title song is “Love Ballad” and in the music video, Yuri Ishizaka and Choi Daniel appeared. The last single “Can’t Stop Loving You” was released on July 6th, 2010.
Beside that, they also released their 3rd album Brown Eyed Soul with their own names as album titles, incorporating all the double-singles from before December 2010 and recording new songs. On the day of the album release, the all-kill chart was achieved, including songs previously released, despite the fact that the title song “If It’s The Same” had no broadcast appearances.
Brown Eyed Soul also adhered to a position that did not ride terrestrial waves and focused only on concert activities, but now it has become an old saying. With the reorganization of the MBC FM radio in October 2010, Jungyup became a DJ following the announcer Moon Ji-ae, and Brown Eyed Soul was broadcast for the first time on Blue Night. Jungyup also appeared on music programs and developed a successful solo album activity, and he also appeared as a fixed guest on the radio with another member of his group. In the case of TV appearances, Jungyup and Sung Hoon appeared in Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook on October 28th, 2011.
According to Jungyup, from the end of 2012 to the beginning of 2013, Brown Eyed Soul signed a contract with the Japanese entertainment agency Avex, and they were planning to be active in Japan. The title track of the new album released in Japanese is “My Story”, which is taken from the title track of their 2nd album. And in September 2013, the Japanese version of the pre-release songs of the Japanese album, “I’ll Get Out” and “Love Ballad”, were released.
In October and December of 2013, the 10th anniversary of their debut was being celebrated and some of the songs from their 4th regular album were released. In February 2014, the members appeared again on Jungyup’s last broadcast on MBC’s radio Blue Night. They announced the split release of the 4th album, but in the end, the 4th album Thank Your Soul, was divided into Side A and Side B, and the release was decided. On February 14th, Thank Your Soul Side A was released.
At midnight on December 8th, 2015, their 4th album titled Soul Cooke was released. As a double title, the titles of the two songs are “Melody of the Night” and “Home”. There are 17 songs in total, and there are a total of 4 solo songs by the members.
Starting with the concert on May 5th, 2018, Brown Eyed Soul started their activities as part of their national tour concert. On June 30th, 2018, the concert was successfully completed. Brown Eyed Soul members who have entered their 40s, which is an age far past their heyday, showed an excellent performance comparable to the concert in 2007, which was praised as the best concert so far.
On September 2nd, 2019, Brown Eyed Soul announced the release of a mini-album starting with the pre-release song “Right” (featuring Sole). And on October 5th, they announced that they were holding concerts in Daegu and Busan starting with the Seoul concert.
