The Controversy Surrounding Snowdrop: What Actually Happened?
Despite the euphoria of Snowdrop, the drama was involved in a controversy that made South Koreans demand Snowdrop to be taken down. From the leaked synopsis, Snowdrop was accused of South Korean history inaccuracies since it portrayed the timeline of the South Korean pro-democracy movement in 1987.
Not only that, people have accused that the character Soo-ho was a spy who infiltrated the activist movement. They became furious since the character named Eun Young-cho has a similar name to the real South Korean activist student Chun Young-cho.
JTBC has released a statement regarding the controversy: “The drama uses the background and theme of the 1987 political situation around the presidential election and not the democratic movement. It is also a melodrama about the young men and women who were victims of that situation. We ask that you refrain from reckless speculation about the drama.” Furthermore, they were willing to change the character’s name even though the character has nothing to do with Chun Young-cho.
