Dating Rumors Among K-Pop Idols
Being a K-pop idol isn’t easy. There are several things that they need to look after, such as appearances, actions, and even their daily life, including dating. Although some K-pop idols, like BTS, are free to do what they wish, most K-pop idols have been prohibited to date when they started their careers.
This is to make sure that their image stays good, to help them avoid scandals that might ruin their careers as idols, and of course, to protect them from sasaeng fans. The restrictions also help K-pop idols be more focused and concentrate on their tight schedule. The dating rule also applies to BLACKPINK, who debuted in August 2016.
Are BLACKPINK Members Allowed to Date?
BLACKPINK’s members include Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa, and they debuted under one of South Korea’s biggest agencies, YG Entertainment. A lot of rumors have spread regarding the “six restrictions” listed on the contracts of all K-pop idols under YG Entertainment, one being the dating restriction. YG is known for its very strict rules on dating which also applies to idols who are still trainees.
BLACKPINK’s Jisoo and Rose opened up about their dating life and the dating rules in YG Entertainment when they appeared on MBC’s Radio Star on the January 11th episode. Jisoo and Rose revealed that all of BLACKPINK’s members are not allowed to date anyone as long as they are under YG’s contract. Jisoo herself added that the rules are actually made to prevent idols under YG Entertainment from dating secretly. But, actually, there are exceptions about dating if the idol tries to discuss and negotiate with YG.
Giving further information, BLACKPINK’s Jisoo shared that in order to prevent dating among YG trainees, male and female trainees are always separated by YG. She added, “Even the eating times of trainees are different. At YG’s cafeteria, if the boys eat at 6 o’clock, the girls will eat at 7 o’clock.” If the male trainees are not finished with their meals when their time is ended, their managers will directly come and cover them up. This is why it is very hard for trainees to meet up with each other or even date. But, don’t you worry. It doesn’t mean that they can’t make friends. Once they debut, everything becomes better.
BLACKPINK’s members mentioned that Yang Hyun Suk (the Chief Executive Officer and founder of YG Entertainment) is just like a dad to them. He cares a lot about BLACKPINK’s members even when they were still trainees. Jisoo, Rose, Lisa, and Jennie revealed that Yang Hyun Suk personally met and warned them about the boys. Jennie even said, “Since the first day I entered YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun Suk sajangnim told me to always be careful of boys.” Aside from Jennie, Jisoo was also questioned when Yang Hyun Suk spotted her wearing a ring. “The first time I met Yang Hyun Suk sajangnim, he asked me, ‘Do you happen to have a boyfriend right now?’ At the time, I was wearing a ring, and he even asked what that ring was. I didn’t have a boyfriend, and it was just a ring,” Jisoo said.
BLACKPINK’s Jennie: Dating Rumor With Teddy Park
BLACKPINK’s Jennie was bombarded with her dating rumor with producer Teddy Park from 1TYM who also works under YG Entertainment. Teddy Park is one of the people behind BLACKPINK’s success after working on some of their top songs including their top hits “Boombayah,” “Playing With Fire,” “Whistle,” and “As if It’s Your Last.” The rumor spread that BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Teddy Park are in a romantic relationship despite their huge gap in age. Jennie is 21 years old and Teddy Park is 39 years old. It was also stated that Teddy Park himself took extra care with BLACKPINK’s songs due to his romantic relationship with Jennie.
But not long after the rumors spread, YG Entertainment spoke up and denied the dating rumors. YG also warned netizens that they will take legal action against the rumors.
On October 14, 2017, YG Entertainment stated “This is the first time we’ve heard about Teddy and Jennie’s dating rumor. The rumor about Teddy and Jennie’s dating is not true. We’ll be taking legal actions against groundless rumors.”
