BESTie’s Hyeyeon’s Appearance In The Unit
Titled as Idol Rebooting Project, the latest survival program from KBS The Unit was aired on October 28th, 2017. By cooperating with dozens of entertainment agencies and nearly 500 participants, this program was listed up as the biggest idol survival program ever in Korea. With the theme of remaking idols who have debuted but have not yet achieved success, The Unit has indeed drawn controversy and has become the subject of conversation by K-Pop fans around the world.
Every year about 30–40 idol groups debut in South Korea, and only a few of them are able to climb to the top of success or at least be popular among the public. Even if they succeed in being famous, surviving is actually the hardest part, it’s not uncommon for these idols to disappear after one year of performing on the music stage. Departing from this anxiety, KBS then started this program and wanted to give a second chance to these ‘failed idols’.
The program that aired for 14 episodes also attracted several famous names to become mentors for the participants who would join later, such as Rain, San E, Urban Zakapa, Hwang Chi-yeul, SHINee’s Taemin, and also the Pop Diva HyunA. Later, the idols who would be winners would be divided into two groups of 10 people and undergo a promotion process for 7 months as members of a completely new group.
Hye-yeon had the opportunity to join and participate in The Unit to maintain her career in the music industry as a singer. Because in this survival show, every idol who wins the vote and survives until the final episode will get promotion in a temporary group and also release new songs.
Hye-yeon’s journey while on The Unit was always volatile… She got different rankings in each episode, such as on the 30th rank in Episode 4, 27th rank in Episode 5, 25th rank in Episode 7, 21st rank in Episode, 24th rank in Episode 10, 26th rank in Episode 11, and the last round she was ranked 27th in Episode 13 before she was finally eliminated.
After The Unit survival show ended, BESTie’s Hye-yeon had a photoshoot with BNT International magazine. During the interview, she talked about many things, including her experience in The Unit.
Hye-yeon had already debuted seven years prior to the show. Initially, she was a former member of EXID. After leaving, she then joined BESTie in 2013. “Many people don’t know who I am, even though I debuted almost seven years ago,” Hye-yeon said. “I joined the program because I wanted people to know my name.”
As BESTie’s leader, Hye-yeon, shared about her most memorable performance during The Unit, when she performed “Jackpot”. She was also very happy to be on stage with Rain. “From the costumes, music, and performance, everything impressed me,” Hye-yeon said. “It is an honor to be able to share the stage with the very talented Rain. I worked hard not to make mistakes.”
In addition, Hye-yeon revealed her appearance that she deeply regrets. At the time of performing “Poca a Poco”, she couldn’t pull off the cute concept well because she was older than the others. “When I saw myself after that, I felt sorry I couldn’t do a cuter concept,” Hye-yeon said. “I don’t have a lot of cute whims. But I’ll learn a lot.”
This female idol who was born in 1990 shared her worries about competing with younger children. Hye-yeon also learned a lot from girls who were younger than her. “I’m a little worried, they are 10 years younger than me,” Hye-yeon said. “I want to show my good side, but also feel pressured. Seeing the girls perform well, I learned a lot from them.”
She would vote for Hello Venus’ Yoon-jo, Melody’s Day Cha-hee, Matilda’s Semmi, and NC.A if she were a viewer of the show. “We share the same experiences and worries, so it’s easier for us to become friends,” Hye-yeon said.
