The Best Idol Dancers and K-pop Group Choreos, According Bae Yoon-jung
Bae Yoon-jung, who participated in Produce series as a dance coach, met Ji Suk-jin on his radio show, Ji Suk-jin’s 2 O’Clock Date, and spoke about her choices for the best idol dancers, her own K-pop choreography, and more.
Bae Yoon-jung chose Park Jin-young and Rain when asked to name two Korean artists who are crazy good at dancing. She said, “When you watch their performances, even from a dancer’s viewpoint, you think, ‘How good are they? It’s off the charts’.”
Bae Yoon-jung said for idol groups that are the best in dancing, “These days, there are no groups that can not dance. Yet BTS is amazing. Girl groups are all good at dancing, too, but with that little something extra, HyunA and Chungha were born. Someone with especially beautiful lines is T-ara’s Jiyeon among the people I’ve instructed. She’s fast picking up everything you tell her.”
While she noted that people such as Hyuna and Chungha have natural talent, Bae Yoon-jung emphasized that talent is not everything. “Dancing isn’t the same as singing,” she said. “You can grow quickly if you have natural talent, but if you study, anyone can improve. There are plenty of idols that weren’t good dancers at the start.”
Bae Yoon-jung’s hit choreographies for idol groups include T-ara’s Bo Peep Bo Peep, Kara’s Pretty Girl and Mister, EXID’s Up & Down, and Brown Eyed Girls’ Abracadabra. Speaking a bit about the dances, Bae Yoon-jung said, “Bo Peep Bo Peep made me think of dogs, but because T-ara was a group of girls, I went for cats. I was originally attacked for Up & Down, and people said I was just doing nothing. But when Hani’s fancam became viral, the song became a hit belatedly.”
On Brown Eyed Girls’ Abracadabra, she said, “It’s hard to give the right vibe to the dance, but anyone can do the moves,” adding that, while it’s not common to get royalty pay for choreographies, Psy gave her a ton to use the dance in Gentleman.
