There’s a reason why Amber has so many friends. Despite being a foreigner, she always makes an effort to type in Korean in a way that makes you fall for her. She also has always gone to support events for her seniors and juniors. Furthermore, she really has a kind way with words. Amber may look really upbeat and outgoing on the outside but you can tell she’s so sweet and kind-hearted on the inside, especially to other f(x) members. Here are some trivia about her friendship with female celebrity/idol friends:

  • An article talks about how it was assumed that Amber unfollowed Sulli’s Instagram account but Amber’s older sister (allegedly) wrote on SNS that Amber did not, in fact, block Sulli, which means Sulli would have had to block Amber for the accounts to be unfollowed.
  • Amber has been known to be a Taeyeon (SNSD) fan, and she got Taeyeon to feature on her solo debut music video “Shake That Brass”. Amber is truly a successful fan.
  • She explained that BoA’s the only person she calls nuna.

Amber’s Tomboy Style

Now when you see Amber, you may notice the way she dresses and the style she chooses is unique and different from her other group members and compared to most girls. While all of her other members wear a skirt, heels, and dress, Amber likes to dress up like a tomboy by wearing shorts, shirt, and sneakers. Plus, her hair cut is like a guy. But this is what makes her different. This type of androgyny is in the body of a girl this time rather than a boy. In an industry where every choice is carefully made to sell music and image, SM decided to include Amber in a female group. With a much more masculine look than any other woman in Korean pop.

Within an industry that has definite gender roles for women, to be hyper-feminized, to be cute, to be attractively flirty, and to fit a very precise mold, Amber’s presence gives hope to those that do not fit within gender perception binaries. Her tomboy fashion and tattoos also have made her stand out among her peers in the crowded K-pop market. The reason why Amber dresses like this is because she wants to be unique and tell her fans as well as the entire group that ladies can dress any way they want in-which they feel comfortable. In her interview with Los Angeles Weekly, Amber said, “I hear that I dress like a boy and that I should be more girly, which I can understand, but I just focus on what I want to do and enjoy my time with fans who love me for who I am“.

Another reason why Amber dresses up like this is because while she was growing up in Los Angeles, she was used to wearing clothes that were very loose and not too tight which she stated by saying, “I grew up playing a lot of sports, [and] thus tying up your hair and wearing comfortable clothing was a must“. So she is different from the other females by playing with the boys and likes getting dirty.

At first, before debut, her family suspected her style would make things difficult for her, but Amber was determined: “Something always told me it was going to be fine and to continue to be myself without changing.” But because of her boyish looks, many fans assume that she might be gay, though she never confirmed whether the rumor was true or not. Furthermore, she also explained in an interview that she supports LGBTQ community and have so many LGBTQ friends. “It’s just love. Love is eternal. Love takes on many shapes and forms. Gay, straight, bi, whatever, it doesn’t matter. I’m all for equality“.

Here are 3 popular Instagram posts of Amber you should know about!

Back in March 2017, Amber worried fans by posting a cryptic message on Instagram. She posted a blank photo and wrote, “I’ve given my everything. I tried to work things out. Whether it be the creative or business, I’ve been doing everything myself for years so I can to keep myself afloat. But in the end, I’m continuously neglected, hurt, and taken advantage of. I’ve been patient… the fans have been extremely patient and I can’t take it anymore just sitting around, waiting, being constantly rejected and given false hope. I’m so tired mentally and physically and this is where I draw the line. No more“. The message alarmed fans, who were trying to figure out what’s happening and if she’s okay.

Many assumed that Amber has been treated poorly by SM Entertainment, therefore fans felt pity for Amber after realizing the reality of foreign singers who work in South Korea. Though there is no confirmation on what the subject of her post is referring to, fans have been speculating that it has something to do with f(x) and their relationship with their agency. Since Amber’s post to social media, fans around the world have posted words of support to the artist with the trending hashtag, #LoveYouAmber that day.

Over on Instagram after the sudden death news of SHINee’s Jonghyun, Amber posted a past photo of her with him, along touching note shortly after his private funeral closed. “I could smile because of oppa’s joke. Because of oppa’s advice, I could dry my tears. And because of your courage, I could gain courage. When I was embarrassed, you didn’t judge me. You tried your best to understand my imperfect Korean, and you embraced me. When people joked that you and I were twins, I was honestly really proud because I wanted to become a great person like you… thank you. I’m so thankful I was able to be your dongsaeng [little sister]. I will become an ‘Amber’ you can be proud of. My Jjong oppa, you did well. I love you”.

for a long time people made me feel ashamed of my body. then i became ashamed of my body. people wanted me to be weak because thats what a girl "should" be like. i threw away my ambitions and goals. well, i'm not that person anymore. I will always continue to work hard, become stronger, and learn to love myself for who i am, imperfections and all. #nikewomen
